M. Short of Statements, Many of the ferchants these times can up- preciate the following told by one of the @ang with many asservations as to its gospel truthfulness. A g ory man a few weeks ago stopped off at one of the western Dakota towns., It was a regular Dakota winter day, blustery and cold, and the drummer lost no time in'getting to the store of his intended victim. On opening the door he discovered the m hant with tering teeth and pinchied lips hugging the sto “Helio, John,” shouted the man of the grip, ‘“what's the matter” John turned a face as blue 08 indigo and chattered laconically, “c—o—o0—ld!" “Well, no wonder,” said the drummer, feeling the stove, “why don’t you firc up! What are you burning, anyrow? I have beon burning statements lately, but the trains are blockaded and my daily supply has not come 1. It is understood that John has since re. signed. A Joke on Dad. The boys had a good joke on “Dad" Blogott last week. Don't know “Dadi” ‘Why, ho is one of the best and jolliest land- lords 1 the state and runs the *only” house at York. Our drummer arose carly to catch the B. & M. east. His bill was § and “Dad” was slipped what he thought were two silver dollars. You can imagine his amazement when makiug up cash ke found ho was short one dollar and had one white poker chip too many. Itspread, of course, and the boys finally made bim acknowledge, Santa Rosus all around. The Humor of 1t “Speaking of bLotels,” said an Omaha drummer, “you know old Smith, who keeps that rocky house at A7 Well, I said to- him not long since, ‘Smith, old fellow, you ar getting too old to be in the hotel business. Why don’t you sell out or rent? ‘Well now,’ said he, ‘I have been thinking of that, and T will sell whenever I can get a purchuser that 1 vhink will keep up the reputation of my house.” To fully appreciate the humor of this, you will have to spend @ night at A. and Mu[l with Smith.” A Mad Prohibitionist. A grocery man made Elgin the other morning on the 4:45 train, Finishing the remains of a half pint, he deposited the bottle in a pocket of one of the overcoats hanging in the oftice. The overcoat belonged to ono of tho leading prohibitionists of Antelope county. After brenkfust he put his coat on and, putting his hands in his pockoets, drew forth the bottle amid the jeers of the crowd. Now there is a wild-eyed prohib. laying for the grocery man. Why? A traveling man inquires why it is that the secretary of the T. M. P. U. does not notify the members of additions to the list of con- tract goods. He also suggests that the houses of this city publish a detailed state- ment of the penalties attaching to cuts in combination commoditic Omaha's Sunday Guests. At the Murray: H. T. Pratt, Chicago; . He did so and he completed the job before he learned that the man had feft shellae, instead of oil, by mistake. He learned this when a customer (aid a dollar bill on the bar, and it finally had to be removed with a chisel. " The shellac destroyed the varnish and the var had to be planed again. When the big window eame down upon it it was thrown to the floor. The head broke off and rolled into a corner, and the arm dropped into a neighboring cuspidor. Humphrey regarded the ve- sult of his accident clinie ruefally, and made a few remarks which would not look well in the columus of a family newspaper. A crowd of nighthaw gathered in front of the place and offered suggestions. Any one of them could broken open the door, and the safe beyond, for that matter, but they did notcare to give themselves away. Humphrey could not reach nigh enough to put the key out of the window, and was forced to remain there until a locksmith could be found The lock- smith released Humphrey with a chiscl and a pleasant smile, and all day yester Ay people kept him busy answering questions as to whether Dburglarvs had entered his place.
