THEY ARE ALMOST UNANIMOUS, vor the Present Site on Grounds of Convenience, and in Order to Keep Faith With Investors. They Profe arnam Streot. ard of trade numbers among ite members many of the hoaviest taxpayers in Omatia. Asa body it is therefore the best qualified of any to oxpross a preforcnce for the location of a city hall. Tur 13kx has taken the sonso of nearly the entive board upon the issue to ba submittod to the votors of Omalia on Fobruary 5. 1t is in favor of the present site by a largo majority. A few more expressions are appended, as follows: Joseph Garnean, jr.—I am emphatically in favor of Farnam stroet. Itis the only place for it, for the reasons that itis the principal streot of the city now and always will bo; it is more central, and is opposite the court touse. The buildings near it now are of a superior class, and those hereaftor to be erccted in that vicinity will be the same, The money dy expended there cuts uo figure in my opinion, as it is infinitesmal. 1 base my opinion solely upon the fact that the site, laying everything elso aside, 18 more dos irable than Jefferson square, Euctid Martin—1 am in favor of ing it built at Bighteenth and Farnam, for several reasons. In the first place,, as I understand it, the city hall was located at this point by a vote of the people, and, to re-locate it now, Dby another vote, would be very liablo to end in legal controversies which would be liable 1o delay the building of the city hall several years. Another reason, it seeins to me, why it should not bo changed is that a good deal of property has changad hands, in the vicin- ity of Iiehtoenth and Farnam,’ sinco the lo- cition of the hall at that point, and 1 have 00 doubt many purchases huve been mado with the understanding that —the site of tho city hall was an_established fact, and it would be unjust to such pur- chasers to now re-lo oven if 1t did not subject the city to any liability in the matter. The Farnam strcet site is a much bettor one from a business point of view, being situated near the court house, and T think it very desirable tuat these pub-: lie buildings should by located s near to- gether as possible, Besides this, iu all tho cities that 1 know anything about, built in simHar locations to Omana, the tenden 18 1o build uway from the river as the towns in- crease in size. 'This is espocially true in the case of Cincinnati, St. Louis ani Peoria, and the buildings lately erectod on Farnam stroot indicate that we are following thew ex- ample. Milton Rogers—I am in favor of the Far- nam strect site. 1 sce no reason for chang- ing the location that has already boon de- cided on, Charles Shiverick—I am in favor of the Farnam street site. 1t is more contral, samucl Rees—U favor Farnum street, if for no otlier reason than to save the amount of money already invested in the foundation and to keep who have put up ma vicinity on the assurance that the city hall was to bo built on Farnam strect, Firther west will be the most populous portion of town and Farnam and Eighteenth the conter. Even 1f you go north to-day, you caunot help noticing that the tide of' population and buildings are flowing in a southwesterly di- roction from there. Jefferson square is on one side of the town now, and in a fow will be a suburb of the bottoms only. jamin Gallagher—I favor the Iarnsm street site most assuredly Heury Suessenbach—I favor the Farnam street site. Jeffersou square is too much to one side of the town, and 00 near tho rail- road tracks, switches and smelting works. Dr. O. 8. 'Wood—1_favor Jefferson square, because I do not feel like climbing a bill when I have to go to the eity hall. Tho pub- lic buildings should be on a level Alfred P. Hopkins—The Iaraam strent site is the most convenient and 1 favorit. It is accessable 1o the busmess mnan, taxpayer and individuals having business in the city hall and county buiidings. I am of tho opinion that the nearer institutions of tho public can be kept together, the better it will bo for the public. Levi . McKenna—I am not very well satisticd with either of the proposed loca- tions, but between-Farnam street and Joffer- son square 1 am in favor of the siteon Farnam street, 1t is the most convenient. J. E. Markel—I am in favor of the present site on Farnam street. It is the most con- venient place at present and 1s far more available than at Jefferson square, P. C. Himebaugh—The Farnam street site 18 the nearest w the large business blocks already built. Kor this reason, and as & matter of convenience to the public, I am in favor of that site for the new city hall, Louis H. Korty—I am i favor of the Far- nam strect site. It is by far moro con- venient to the public than Jofferson squaro, People in paying their taxes are often com- pelled to seurch both county and city rec- ords, and the nearer these two institutions— the county building and city hall—can be kept together the better convenience is af- forded the publie, J. R. Harris—I am pronounced in favor of Farnam street as the site for the city hall, As a matter of public convenience it surpas- ses the Jefferson square site, and as a loca- tion it is preferable to that of Jefferson square. Samuel J. Howell—I prefor the Farnam street site and will vote that way. It is more convenient, more centrally located, and being closely situated to the couuty building it :uukca it by far the most desirable site of the WO, T. A. Creigh—I think the city hall should be on Eighteenth and Farnam. We have only oe little pit of a square as a breathing spot, and we should keep it. All other cities have them, and -from a business point of view Ithink the court house and city hall should be near each other, Fred J. Bothwick—My choice is the Far- nam strect site, as it is convenient for all doing business’ at tho county building, and besides the judgment of the people who voted for the eite there are just as able to judge to-day as they were then. It would also be unf: to spend the money of the peoplo on any other site, John A, Creighton—I am for Jefferson square. Yes, 1 have some property near there, within a block or 80, 1 think the site is more suitable for a city hall than the one on 'arnam street, William Flemming—1 think 1t would be an actof injustico to parties who have pur- chased property and erected buildiugs on Farnam street in the vicinity of the present site, with the understanding that the city hall was to be built there, to now change the location, General E. F. Test—When it comes to A question of locating the city hall on Jeffor- 0N 8qUATC 48 AZainst Farnam street, you can count on my favoring I'arnam street ever; time. I have no sympathy whatever wllg the gang of men that is seeking to relocate the eity hall and that is at the head of the disturbing element in city politics, Any man who would make the assertion that that he would gloat over the fact of crows roosting m the magnificent building that has been erected by Tne Bke deserves to be quaran- tined in his own house, —— Eureka, The motto of California means,T have found 1t.
