County Clerk Roche stated yesterday that he believed the house committee on priviloges and elections had not opened the ballot boxes recently sent to the legislature, and that there was no poll books _in them to be exam- ined, as reported. Mr. Roche claims to have all the poll books of the recent election in his possession, as well as the keys to tho boxcs. — Philip Lang's Settlement. Philip Lang, the Farnam street shoe man, has compromised with his_creditors paying them 55 cents on the dollar, the amount aggregating £,250, the stock being valued at about $13,000. Opening the Slots, The Cable company has placed several men at worl along its lines opening the cable slots which the cold weather has decreased be- ond the usual width of five-cighths of an nch. The workmen use a steel wedge which they drive to the head, forcing an opening about an inch in width, They then insert u wrench with which they tighten the bolts and which draws back the guide rails 10 the required width. The work is not un- attended by dang as the wedge is some: times squeezed from the slot and flies fro quently to a distance of fifty feet. A blow from the wedge would cause painful results, e M The Express Companies Deflant Relative to the action taken by the produce commission men in sending out circulars instructing their country cor- respondents to ship produce by freight, in- stead of by express, Charles Potter, of the Wells-Fargo Express company, stated that it would not materially decrease'the business of nis company.
