It was a demonstrative audience, especially in the upper tiers, the ogeupunts of which de manded and were accorded, reluctantly how- ever, a number of recalls. “Ihe Stowaway" is a melo-drama. It abounds in exciting incidents, though its plot is somewhat jerky. The hero 1s a very good anda very much abused young man. T¥ evil geniis is a very bad young gentleman who hestitates not before deserting and murdering his wife, and scheming to unlawfully posscss himself of the heritaz of the hero, who has been wilfully descrtod by s father As in every melo-drama, the characters in *“The Stowaway" have a faculty of appeariig when and where they might pected. As in melo-dramas, also, they ave inspired with sentiments which do not often find expression in every day life, while their actions almost _closely border on almost ex- travagant exaggeration. But people have not yet tired of the melo-drama, Many appre ate it, for the sake of the days that are gone, while others of a later generution, fly to it as a relief from the farce-comedy,with which for years they have beensurfeited. Those seck- ing a society play in *“The Stowaway"will be disappointed. But those who w clean, well-presented and_interesting play, an afford to witness it. The company is not a great one.
