ELECTRIC LIGHT FOR THE BLUFFS The Aldermen to Takea Junketing Trip—The Allen-Josselyn Wed- ding-Judge Aylesworth on Smells, Investigating Electric Lights, At its last meeting the council decided to pass the question relating to an electric light ordinance until the next meeting. This practically settles the matter until 1889, as the next meeting is set for next Monday but as that is Christmas eve, there will probably be no business transacted, When Mayor Rolirer advocated the idea of sending a committee to the various cities of the state for the purpose of looking into the matter and ascertaining just what was wanted, Alderman Lacy objected, and de manded that an ordinance of some kind be passed forthwith. He did not care whether the Hawkeye ordinance was passed or killed but he wanted to vote, and vote he must The other members of the ¢ 1 dis with him, and Alderman Lacy's idea was specdily stowed away, while the orchestra softly played “Under the Snow.” The Alderman from the Second ward then an nounced that he was in favor adjourning for 1888 and forever, but the council not let go of the string, and the wenton, Mr. Bow the counci evening, show \of the Hawkeye, addressed and stated that he w offered to pay the expenses of the atrip throvgh the state to investieate the various plants and systems. The offer was ted, and the council will take a short ting trip, though not at the expense of the gencrous Mr. Bowen As nearly a8 can_be ascertained, the mem- bers of the council are agreed on one thing, and that 1s to seeure a plant that will fur- nish light for twenty-four hours per day, ata rate not to e per Lour for cach ? In fact. it is llmv Y!n- o Holmes for the | presented to the council last’ meeting, The Hawkeye offers to fur- nish_the eity with free light at its vavious buildings, provided it is exempted from tax- ation. The council debated quite seriously on that clause. The representatives of the other companies are waiting anxiously to see if the council grants an exclusive franchise, If it does not, there will be some lively com- petition for awhile, although the electric light men cxpress 'the belief that a pool would undoubtedly result, with no matevial benefit to the citizens, Alderman Mete request for additional time for Mvestigation will undoubtedly result profitably for the city, 1 that the council will arrive ata clearer understanding of the various systems after a trip through the state, and will be better prepared to secure a system that will give perfeet satisfaction in its working as well as in 1ts cost. It isasourco of comgratulation that the dreaded disease, smallpox, is now about stamped out of the city, and that it was pre- vented from becoming cpidemic. There were in all twelve cases, and but four of them resulted fatally. Allof the other pu- tients are now recovered and able to attend to their work s usual, ulthough they are- still quarantined to avoid any possible con- tagion. The record this year is so much better than in former years that much specu- lation is indulged in us to the cause of it, and a Bee reporter finds the ovinion of & number of physicians on the subject to bo as follows: Oue thing that worked favorably was the ability in the majority of the cases to ke the patient in the house where he was sick, thus avoiding the inc ly fatal re- sult of the almost unavoidable tendant on the_removal of pest house. Said he, “It is getting to be the time of year when the prisoners need a little exercise in the open air before being brought into court, After sta g in that vile smelling corridor fora mmlh(-r of hours the efiluvia of their whisky-souked carcasses is several degrees 100 loud to contaminate the atmosphere of & respectable locality ; or to be allowed to bre for me the horrors of & continual nightmare by intruding their poisonous vapors in red vieinity of my aristocrat ™ “Perhaps they have not been exposed 1o the lumllrox but I am not ready to go upon this stand and swear that they are perfect) barwless.
