Mr. Martin Higgins, a farmer who owns and lives on the southwest half of the north- east quarter of section one, in Hardin town- ship, was in the city yesterday for the pur- pose of purchasing more land to add to his forty-acre farm. He raised this year on his forty acres 1,500 bushels of corn and 3,000 of potatoes. He sold 1,200 bushels of pota- toes at 50 cents per bushel and 1,800 bushels at 40 cents. He also raised 250 bushels of onions, which he sold at 50 cents, and eight bushels of beans at $2 per bushel. ' Estimat ing his corn at 23 cents per bushel his_cntire crop amounts to $1,320, or over §33 per acre. He and his sou did all the work on the erop. A report was circulated yesterday to the effect that the small pox was spreading in the vicinity of the transfer, and that the lines of the quarantine had been extended. The physician 1 charge of the cases was seen in regard to the matter and denied the statements, He said there was no founda- tion for any such reports, There are now but two cases in the city. Mr. Thomas Bowen, representing the Os- kaloosa Electric Light company, isin the city in response to a telegram from the city offi- cials, asking him to come here for the pur- pose of furnishing information relative to lo- cating an electric light plant in this city, and tosubmita preposition to the city council, In conversation with a BEe representative yesterday, Mr, Bowen stated that his com- pany did not make a business of operating electric light plauts so much as it did of building them. Their business is to manu- facture aud setup the necessary machinery, but not to operate the plant, as they are put- ting in these plants all over the country, In response to a question regarding the cost of this light to the consumer, he said that it could be furnished to cost about tne same as gas at $1.75 to #2.00 per thousand.
