The rates of transit between Council Bluffs and Omaha are now causing much discussion. Many have the idea that the bonus voted to the bridge company, and taxed to the people, was with the agreement that the motor company should charge no more than 10 cents for n trip. This is & common error. The bridge tax was voted with an agreed rate of tolls for crossing® the *bridge. The motor rates were in an ordinance giving the right of way to run tho electric motors on certain strects. These motor rates are not contingent upon the bridge tax. The people have been given to understand, however, that in no event would it cost more than 10 cents to ride from one city to the other. Now the company usks the council to amend the char- ter so ‘as to allow different rates charged. This has awakened much d sion since the presentation of the request. All are watehing the council to sco what that body will do-about it. The motof company recognizes that there is a demand for alow er te than 10 cents, to accommodate those who havo occasion t9 &0 buckwards and for- wards frequently. The proceeding was brought to prevent the fur- ther issuance of bonds for public improve- ments, The effect would be to stop all pav- g, grading or sewer work, by cutting out the intersections which are charged to the oity. The paviug in progress at the time the case was instituted, was continued to a finish, as the coutractors expressed their willing- ness to do this and take their chances on the injunction holding, knowing that payment could be enforced. The suit was brought in the name of 1ra Platuer, but it is understood that he was not the only interested party. The parties brmiiug the suit offered through their attorneys, Mynster & Lindt, to dismiss the case for a certain consideration, which was $1,500 attorneys’ fees, and a receipt for special assessments against certain property of Mr. Platuer for paving, in all amounting 10 about $4,800. The city refused to pay it, and the injunction held until 'lhurldny, when it was disuissed by mutual agree- ment, It required the payment of $350 to se- oure the dismissal of the suit. The money ‘Was made up by the paving firms of McAdaw, THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: Wickham & Co., and the the two former Amborg and hicago Lumber company, ; ying $150 cach and the latter £0.
