LINCOLN NEWS AND GOSSIP, A Move to Establish a Law Depart- ment at the State University. NEW NEBRASKA ENTERPRISES. Incorporation of the Norfolk and Southwestern Railway Company — The Marble Dealers’ Convention —General and Personal, 1020 P Stre LixcoLy, Nov, 16, For several years past there has been a great deal said about the advisablity of a law department in connection with the st versity. The only reason that this matter has not been pushed is because it has been thought that the opportune moment h not arrived; that it would be the better plan to ground the departments of the university es- tablishod bofore adding others of insser im l:m( 06 Agitation has, thercfore, been ept down from one year to another, but in view of the fact that ‘more of the abler and better educated young men of tho state are secking the law rather than any of the other professions, anew interest ha nawakenod in the scherne, and there is some of its success Thore are many reasons urging i1ts neces sity. Very many of the lite graduates of the university who have chosen law their profession, have becn comy from home, from year to year, to acquire the training and knowledige 8o essential for suc cossful practice, and the law depart wents of Ann Arbor, lowa City vard and Johns Hopkins reap the rewa credit that ought to rest with the state’ chief institution of learning. Hesides, it is urged that the various departments are now 80 thoroughly established that the law de partment can be added without pressure, and that the university will be greatly benefitte by the addition. Lite graduates who would delve the mto mysteries of Blackstone can finish the chosen profession at home, and without necessitating an expense that ought not 1o attend the life work of legitimate heirs of n state's educational system, It will also be urged that the state has a suffh cicnt library to mect the wants of the de. partment for many years to come, and that the only expense to the state additional to that_already known will be to sustain a law faculty. It is thought, in view of the needs, that there will be no dificulty in securing the necessary appropriation at the hands of the next legislature, and this claim of the university will b urged by resi dent members of tle house and sen ate, and by others whose attention has been dircetly called to the subject. The proj bids fair to give the stat slebrity, and if it wins will keep Nebraska's lezal fledgings at home Laxcors Bureav or Trr Ovana Bar, } ssurance NEW NEBIASKA CORPORATIONS The proverbial enterprise of Nebraskans is again indicated by th icles incorporating the Bemis Park company aud the Yankton, Norfolk & Southwestern railway company, filed with the seerctary of state” this morn ingg. A ver manct organization was cffected. ‘Ihe meet ing was harmonious and _appreciative of the business and social interests of the craft. It was the sensc of the convention that legisla tion in this bebalf is necessary in the state. Under existing laws they bave no claiu upon goods after thoy leave the d hands, and consequently, they have been at the mercy of the unscrupulous. A resolu- tion was passed sceking to have the legisla ture of the stato interest themsclves in their behalf, They ask that a law be passed that will proteet them from dishonest purchasers. Charles Needhart, of Brownville, was elected permanent chairman, and J. H. Meyer, of Grand Island, otary, The r tailers'of the south were represented by the following representutive dealer A. H. It shows that the progress in rifle practice has been constant from year to year. Tn 1565, the figure of merit was 60; in 'S6, 2; 187, 73: and this year, nearly 83, This progress, Colouel Henr is due to caro ful instruction, untiring zeal, energy and work of theoficers and the enthusiasm of the enlisted men Fort Laramie, Colonel Merriam, has gained most since last year, and Troop I, Ninth cavalry, and Company 1B, Seventh infantry, aptain Hughes and Licutenant Booth Colonel Henry recommends that every shot fired hercafter be counted, instead of, as now, picking out the b res in a large number; that a new carbine be issued to the cavalry, and that they be not required to com pete with the infantry and use the rificasnow done. He believes every enlisted man com ing to or returning from the ritie compet: tions should have commutation of rations or money to buy meals, and not, us now, ear, ing his food While the poorcst emigrant has his regular meal at every eating station. It is also recommended that the targets, repre senting men kneeling, lymg down and stand ing, e used at individual firings, instead of the’ bull’s.cye target with circles. These gure targets are used in skirmish firings, and have caused the present shooting at a figure, such as would be represented in battle, The department of the Platte wi bly lead the army in skivmish firing, and be second in individual firing, being lowerod in the latter by a few who failed to do as well as the majority. The recommendation that atthe end of the season, at all posts, the companies have a competition, will produce good results and be of great interest. There are many things to be grate- ful for,if we would but think so, and among these are the introduction of Van Duzer’s Flavoring Lxtracts somewhat less than a third of acentury ago. If there is a cook in Ameriea, professional or otherwise, who has not ted and is not ready to avouch the excellence of these well known preparations, she or he is wofully behind the age.
