LINCOLN NEWS AND NOTES Exorbitant Rates Charged by City Hackmen* VISIT OF EASTERN CAPITALISTS. Ao Insane Man Sent to the Asylum— The Savannah Freight Line—Po- litical Pointers—Supreme Court Matters. 1029 P Staket, LiNcoLy, Oct. 23, The hackmen of the city know how to pluck a plum when they see one as well as the slickest sharper of the land, and judging from the observations of Tue Bee man during the past week, and especially last night, some of them do not hesitate to do it. The ordinances of the city regulate the fares from vlace to place within the city limits, but it occasionally happens that the law can be evaded and the charge made and extorted is little short of highway robbery. Last night one of the boys ronnded up a gentle- man slightly inebriated at the corner of Twenty-first and N streets, and b rougbt him to the Capital hotel ana charged him 50 cents for his ride. No. 42 had caught a tar- tar and he kicked on the bill 0 settle the matter, Mr. Incbriate asked to be taken to the captain of the night police, and it was cheerfully done, but for the reason that be- came apparent when an additional 50 cents was added to the bill, and collect; the captain could not decide ot in the driver's favor, for he was within the limit of the charges allowed by the ordinance. But for all that it A & gamo of pure robbery on a small scale. The ordi- nance fixing back fares provides that a sched ule of rates shall be posted within the had but skim the sky in any light and Tue 1 scribe fails to see any rates or anything that looks like them in any of the carriages pro- vided for the convenience of the visiting or traveling public. Complaints are becoming quite frequent of late anything but favorable to the credit of the city h.u kmen, Lmxcorx BUREAU or Tie Omana Bis, % AN Three special coacl hcq this morning on the Burlington fl_\'or and tarried in this city until this afternoon, when they went on to Kearney, where they were specially m.uml The gentlemen comprising the > umllfl! hailing feom Boston: and Springtield, Mass., and a number of them have property interests in the west, especially in the new water power at Kearney, which is attracting attention from moneyed men in a great many locali- ties. The party numbered forty-three per- s0ns, and they spent the forencon in looking over the poiats of interest at the Capita Some of the gentlemen were strangers, but they hrve come west to plant money providing inducements are sufficient to warrant a ven- ture, The Frank mvestment company will Invite the consideration of the party first. It now scems that the canal built by Mr. Frank something like a year ago was not the scheme of a crank or a man. It doubt- less has the bottom that wiil make Kearney one of the best cities of Nebraska, or of the great west. The excursionists left well pleased with what they saw of Lincoln, and will probubly stop on their return trip’ and Rive the city a more extended visit. While here the gentlemen were handsomely enter- tained by the board of trade and some of the leading mu.-n- of the city. NSANE, o at present em pln\wl on the street work was brought to police headquarters a day or two ago at the instigation of his three brothers, who de- clared that he was dangerously insane. He ‘was taken before the board of insane com- missioners to-day and after a careful hoear- ing was committed to the asylum. At times his actions were very strange, aud for the past balf dozen days he has rarely been with- out a “‘case knife,” and his comrades and friends became afraid that he might take his own hfe and pmbubl{)lhnl of others, and 80 filed the complaint. uring the night he walks about taiking to himself, and frequent- ly disturbed the repose of the boys with whom he tented. He is certainly sick and deeply afflicted if not insa B IN PREIGHT BATES, sit of the agent of the Savanah freight line in Lincoln, considerable interest has been taken in the project and considera- ble business has been pledged to it. It is un- derstood that freight originating in New York, Boston or Philadelphia is taken to Savanah, Ga., by boat daily, and transmitted from there to Memphis, Tenn., by the short- est lines, thence to Kansas City and on to Lincoln over the Missouri Pacific, or the Burlington lines. This deal, it is said insures Lancolt the same rates enjoyed by Omaha, or areduction of 10 cents on the old rates by way of the lakes. It has been officially stated thaton the 25th of this month a new live stock tariff will go mto effect. Still, however, there will be but little if any alteration in 'the rates. The change includes the entire western railway system. Instead of the quoted rates on a car as horetofore the cost of shivments will be made exclusively by weight. The rate from Lincoln to bhlmgo will be 2034 cents per 100 on cattle an cents on hogs and sheep. * To Bt. Louls and 30 cents per 100 respec- tively. The m{mmum weight allowed on a thirty-oue foot car is 20,000 pounds of cattle, 1:,0(11 pounds of hogs and 12,000 pounds of sheep, The weighing will all be done in Chicagoor at the point ot destination at the great ship- ping cen ters, and by the regular association, the roads having no direct connection with this work. This change is made to provent secret cut. ting on rates understood so well by shrewd railroad men. It may prove achange for the better and it may not. But, failing, the ne- cessity of bettor railway legislation will be- come more and more apparent. There is ready plenty of room for change for the bet- ter. POLITICAL POINTERS, *I am taking @ lively interest in the re- mbllcln national campaign,” remarked Hon. . C. Quinn, of Peoria, Iil, to-day, “and I can see no possible chance now for the de- feat of the party. The faith of any observ- ing democrat will be shaken by geing into Indiana, and it will be lost entirely by going fato New York. My coumrvnq}w. and th§ Irish-American_citisans gener will vote a8 they never have before. Unfortunately they have becn rocked in & democratic cradio since Lhe great influx of Irish in '46, and as hey aro naturally a people of quick preju- s und hard to change, they have abided b their first love. But it is ying fast. When dead it will be hard to resurrect it. The attitude of England in the campaign is the straw that's breaking the ecamel's back. Indiava is safe. I am well leased with my reception in Lineolu, We ad a magnificent meeting last night." “Iought to know something about tho political situation in Cass and Otoe counties,”” said Hom, J. B. Strode, “and I think I do. Major Watson will certainly be elected as the float h‘llrencmulwu. It would be a calamity 10 herald his defeat, and the republicans of both countics appreciate the fact. He has a clean record as a legislator, and wherever known is recognized as one of the sblest Iawyers in the state. No friend ever sought the aid of John C. Watson in vain. He is generous, honest, able and indus- trious and hurls his lance straight into the ranks of the enemy without fear of resuits. No; the whole ticket will be elected in both counties, and if 1 mistake not therc will be special reason lor rejoicing on the Tth of November, The state and national re- publican tickots will be elected or something ‘worse than a Burchard fool ch will come upon us. I have been over the state consid- erably, and it strikes me lhfl there will bo republican legislative gains rather than The bo)- appreciate the fact that the e has come to stand by the party and prciple.” SUPREME COURT MATTERS. He lingered around Omaha, however, until one week ago last Saturday, when he sud- disappeared, and no clue as to his has been ascertai; W. Riley, of the above firm, states that on the day of his disappearance he saw him about 1 o'clock in the afternoon on Farnam street, and with this all trace of him is obscure. lInquiry at the house where he resided resulted in the information that when leaving he took with him a small va- lise, leaving the rest of his chattels be- hind. He bhad no money on his rson at the time of his departure. Ir. Riley was scen in his offic the Ramgo block, and when questioned cerning the affair stated that Lliams acted somewhat strangel since the death of his brother. he family and Williams' European home is at Warwic| K, Englaud. A diligent inquiry has been made at all points concerning him, but the matter is still enshrouded in mystery. gt o Don't hawk, and blow, and spit, but use Dr. Sage’s Catarrh remedy. ——— Opposed to Kindergarten. The following communication is from a party who is evidently not in favor of the kindergarten systemn as it has been intro- duced into our schools. “The board of education spends three oi four hundred dollars every year for kinder- garten supplies to teach the children habits that arc anything but sober and industrious. ‘The true aim of Froebel, the father of kindergarten, was to teach children between the ages of three and five years habits of tematic thougnt. The public schools have nothing to do with children of that age. Yet this money is needlessly spent when the sanitary couditions of half the school build- ings is disgracetul. “It is @ question whether Ralph Waldo Emerson, Abraham Lincoln, or Peter Cooper could have moulded a cube or a prism in clay. Yet we see no one coming up through the mediocre mass who is able to fill any of their places, in spite of the great advantages of the present generation. Good sanitary con- ditions and sober common sense teaching in our public schools will make better and stronger men and women than airy flights of these would-be reforms. “A Crimiz ) b “‘Regulate the regulator” by using Warner's Log Cabin Sarsaparilla. I refer to Tenth stroet and the snide auction stores located thereon. Only last Saturday, I saw several poor un- sophisticoted men victimized by these human or rather inhuman sharks: and as quickly as my sense of curiosity prompted me to enter that of wrong caused me to leave. In my opinion, people who earn their money in this criminal manner are capable of either burg- larizing a store or sandbagging a woman, and your people cannot_be astonished when ‘they find their homes robbed considering the au- thorities allow these thieves to remain in your midst, In few parts of the world have I seen more open-faced robbery carried on. I hope to again visit your beautiful and thr city which bids fair to rival her sister, Chi- , and cannot but hope that I will find the evilI mention, this social plague, no more. Advice to Mothers. The steed was the pride of his heart and had cost him $150 of his hard earniugs. A tour of the city finally revealed the fact that an old man of Scandinavian descent had innocently driven the horse off aud had him in his own barn. The Swede had tied his horse next to Doug’s while Lie dropped into a neighboring store for a moment. On coming out he mstook Egan's horse for his own, there being & slight similarity between them, and the old man’s eyesight being slightly impaired. The horse was readily returned to Egan and the old man found his horse where he had been tied. All fine Liquor Stores sell Jarvis' best, = A Runaway.
