THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: SATUEDAY. OCTOBER 13, 1888 5 NEEKER-WILDNAN CONTEST. Btate of Affairs in the Sixty-Sev- enth Representative District. HAYES COUNTY REFUSES THE GAG Will ¥ of & Indications That the Fol nish the Only Means Settlement of the Trouble. W The Mee tost in the Sixty seventh representative district will not down until after the echoes of tae election in No vomber have died away. There is nothing surer than this. Hayes county swands boldly out and refuses to take tie gag prepared for the republicans of the district by the execu tive committee of the republican state central committee. The unnatural deal will be re sentod at the polls. Mr. Wildman is no longer in the race. His pledged faith to the board of arbitrators will be ket to the letter. W, C. Ashwill, editor of the Stratton Herald, was in the city to-day and caught on the fly by Tue Bee rustler just before his depart for home. Hands met, lips moved and answers followed questions in rapid succes sion. “How are you fellows in the Sixty-seventh satisfied with the settiement of your late political difculty ! “I'he difficulty is not settled be until after the election in November. We were deeply chagrined at the action of the committee. The so-called settlement 1s rot ten to the core. “Why do you kick now?! You agreed to abide by the decision of the arbitrators, aud it was unanimous.” “You are mistaken sir; Mr. Wildman made his own agreement, and will stand by it, but that binds the republicans of the district in no way. The whole deal is rotten to the tho commitieo was not a unit he vote stood four for T can not nd will not d to sustain Mr. Wildman, but I c prove this statement whenever necessary it was a Laird deal inthe interestof the rail youds. We do not propose to stand it. When i ame known that the committee was gOing to Kit to pass upon the watier a Mr. Abbott, of Hayes county, rode across the country to Stratton, a distance of fifty miles, to learn the result of the confereuce at the earliest possible moment. That countv said openly when the method of adjustment be- came known it would not stand Moek any ovent, and it is given out cold Thomas, of Dindy, the democratic date, will carry the county by a majority of 200 votes." “How docs he stand in Cass and Dundy counties " “I toll you they have no use for him. His fmpeachment record is too black for every voter of the district that has any regard for integrity in politics. The records are against him. to his old home if you want to find out just how C. W, Meeker stands. 1 do not belicve that he can carry hisown county. The county seat fizht there will give him a black eye. Since this fight commenced he has been ng water on both shoulders, and the boys have spotted the fact. Imperial will dose him, and_ Champion can no imore than hold him up. He canuot begin to carry Hitch- cock county.” “Would "you have been satistied with any other man than Wildman ¢ “Yes; but he was our choice. But terfield would have healed the wounds. Meeker was not nominated. It has been a deal of treachery from first to last. After the convention finally adjourned ev effort fmaginable was made to compromise the mat- ter, but nothing but Meecker would do, It proposed to o back to the primary elec- tions and do the whole work over again in regular order, step by step, but Meeker and his crowd would concede nothing. Wildman was willing to step down and out but he ex acted the same thing of Meeker. Butterfield was suggested as a_compromise man. It has been a clear case of bulling from the start, and it will be a case of h\llluufi at the polls. This is all I have to say about the watter.” SUED FOR DAMAGES. Lrank Torano filed his petit; trict court to-day against Frank who had the contract for erecting the cot school house, and for cause of action wes that he worked for him as a common day laborer during the early part of the spring; that his employer ordered him to as sist iu raising a heavy stone, which was cle- vated to its position by pulley and ropes; that he obeyed the order and sustained seri ous and painful injuries by one of the ropes breaking, but by no fault or carelessness of his own; that one of his legs was broken, his back badly sprained and that ‘he was confined to his room for over three months, and is still in a weak physical condi- tion; that the injuries he sustained wert ¢ due tothe wrongful, unlawfuland loss methods of bis employe, agents or 1an. Such might pos- sibly be soen in the lowest quarters of the larger towns or cities, just as can be found any day in the cities of this land of progress or’any other country, but to have it stated impliedly, or otherwise, as a characteristi the Irish people I venture to raise a very decided protest. Lixwoon, Neb., Oct. 10.—To the Editor of Tne Ber: There was a communication in the Ovana Dainy Bee last Wednesday en- titled “‘Railroads Outdone,” making an at tack on a gentleman of this place by the name of Frank Reid, signed by one calling himself “Eye Witness.” The attack was cowardly, ungentlemanly, and altogether uncalled for; and the article from beginning to end was without a particle of truth in it. It was claimed that the rail- roads tried to manipulate the caucus for their own good. Here is an extract: “Scarcely had the time arrived for the committeemen to call the caucus to order, when in stalked Capper Reid, the chief of the raiiroad henchmen of the depot force, with a gang of nine or ten railroad employes, a large portion of whom were deep-dyed dewo- crats, and with a few others of a similar stripe, began their scheming to elect an out- and-out railroad gang to attend the republi- can county conventiou." This is a fabrication from beginning to end. Mr. Reid never had auy thing to do with manipulating the caucus. Mr. Reid came to caucus as a republican and voted as a re- an for the man of his choice. And 1t is @ well kuown fact that none of the depot boys said or did anythiug more than vote their sentiments. Asto the men of “like stripe,” to which Eye Witness refers, who are they?! If memory serves me they were were as follows: F. C. Johnson, justice of the peace; J. W. Bond, justice of the peace ; A. Clark Records, township supervisor; L, ¥ Sowers, architect; L. N. Smith, pastor of the M. E, ('llurdl and several farmers from the community. ‘The contest im the caucus was not who should go to the republican con- vention, but who should be nommated for supervisor, aud in spite of all Wm. Husenet- ter could do A. Clark Records was nominated by a large majority. This made Husenetter foel bad and caused Eye Witness to make the attack on Mr. Reid, for he flattered himself that any abuse of the railrords would tickle VanWyck and Tue Bee. Butl wish to say right here, that Van Wyck has more friends in the ranks which Eye Witness abuses than Eye Witness ever controlled This whole community claims Van Wyck as o fricud—both democrats and republi cuns. This Van Wyck knows when he was up here last summer and made & speech to the boys, all purties gave him a send-off, and were glad to do him honor. A more quiet or peaceable setof men never assembled in Linwood than composed that caucus, until Eye-Witness came into caucus with a gang of hay-palers from Saunders county, and tried to carry the caucus by storm as usual.
