The law distinetly says that no alacrman shall contract to do ny work for the city, hence the impending ro. [t has been customary, notwith- standing the statutory prohibition, to buy city supplics from business houses in which aldermen were interested. Lumber has been bought of aldermen, hardware, furniture and other supplics. Probably in’ Alderman Watermun's case there would be no such talk us at present were itnot for the peculiar circumstances. The fire department boys are kept on duty a good many hours at streteh, and although in some respects the, more than earn their salarics, vet they have much idle time on their hands. Herctofore they have employed part of this in repaint. ing the hose ¢ ad have done some excel- lent work. The saving to the city was con- sulerable. Tt seems that if the city ever needed to be economical it is now, when there are so many improvements to pay for. Itis understood that Joln Short is the chicf backer of the impeachment move. Congressman Lyman has met with defeat in his suit against the city. Some time ago there was some sidewalk improvement made in front of his residence. The amount was only a few dollars, but he objected to paying 1on the ground that personal service was not made upon him. The notice of the as- sessment was published in one of the daily papers, but Mr. Lyman claimed that while this might do for non-resident, and where owners of property were not known, it would not do for residents, who should be personally served. Judge Decmer sustained him, and ruled against the city. Steps were then taken to prevent others from escaping through this saue loop-hole.
