THE OMAHA DAILY BEE THE DUDELETS LOSE THE DAY Btudents at the University Indulge in a ‘“Cane Scrap.” BOPHOMORES SNAP THE STICKS Bupreme Court Matters—Incorpora« tion of a New Milling and Eleva- tor Company — Repablican Campaign Appointments. 1020 P StRERT, LixcoLy, Sept. 23, The freshman and soplomore classes of the state university indulged in the eonventional annual “cane scrap” this morning. An eyo witness describes the combat as one of thrill ing interest for a tew short minutes. For years soon after the commencement of the fall torm of the university it has been the custom of the freshmen to appear on the campus, each carrying a cane or walking stick, and this has been the signal for the sedate and digmfied sophomore class to nip the “dude act” in the bud. But this custom extends beyond the limits of the university of Nebraska. 1t gocs the rounds of the differ- ent institutions of learning of this and other countries, The cane act signifies that the wearer has dropped his educational pinafores and the “scrap” tests his ability to get there, *T'he “scrap’’ was watched with interest by staid professors and tutors, but one by one the *‘walking sticks” were snapped in two and the sophomores were monarchs of all they surveyed. ~During the en. tire_fracas’ the best of feeling existed betteen the contesting classes and the final “round up” will take place on the university eampus to-morrow morning. It is an easy matter to break an ordinary cane when one ets it in his_clutches, and this is why, per- Fans, tho freshman class was vanquished in the preliminary struggie. As customary, to-morrow morning the university campus will be the scene of the final fray. A strong cane will be put in the hands of the fresh man class and the sophomore boys must ob- tain undisputed possession of it within a given time or permit their juniors to carry cancs without molestation. ~The battle will be untamed and ficrce, The swain with his first “‘base ball mustache” would hardly fight with greater persistency than will the boys to prove that they have drifted beyond their pinafore days in the school room.” But, No use for folks in calico To sigh to dress in silk, And still less use to shed a tear Above the milk that's spilt. To-morrow sixty freshmen will test the mettle of about forty sophomores. A SLICK GRANGER, Poter McNamara is a farmer. his trading in Lincoln. He is an moffensive 1ooking, horny handed son of toil. - But looks wre deceptive. Patsy was on the market fosumluy with @ load of oats. The top of he load was bright and dry. The hands of buyers went down into the load and O. was the word, But Patsy wanted the top of the market for his grain. He drove here and there. Buyers continued to examine his ds. Bids on theload were freely made. To l‘.i’.f’k at Patsy 622 would think that he would become the vietim of the firse rper who ghanced to come along. A blue coated ge! tleman chanced to run his arm down mw lnu load and his hand struck a large stone. He lu.-sv. an eye on Patsy, but the load was sold weighed out over forty-six bushels, and he was gone before Mr. Olficer could get his nluu hes upon him. But he came to town to- y, ovidently ‘‘smelling a mice,” for his lomi was the pure quill. The purchaser was taken in, but deciines to squeal, but will watch Patsy in the future. BUPKEME COURT NEWS.
