The contract for a hydraulic passen- ger elevator for the government build- ing has been awarded to the Crane ele- vator company of Chicago, th firm which furnished the elev: for the Ogden house. The price $2.610. It is not known whether the elevator will be operated by water di- reet from the mains or foreed by pumps in the basement to the top of the tower. If the latter plan is adopted the same water may be used continually. Work on the elevator is to be begun at once, and as the well is now ready, it will be but a short time until it isin working order. The pupils and teachers of the school of the sisters of charity went out to Big lake yesterday for their annual autumn picnic. There were four bus loads of the pleasure-seekers, and they formed o merry party., The day was a most en- io;nble one, and those participating found nothing lacking that could add to the pleasuves of the day. The new track of the Omaha and Council Bluffs Bridge company on Broadway is being laid as fastas a large force of men can put it down. The stone paving in the center of the street is all torn up, to make room for the proposed change. The change has been made as far east as Seventh street. The paving in the center of this thor- oughfare has been in poor condition for some time, in fact the street wasnot in condition ‘when the paving was done, as the two-foot sewer underneath was but just completed at the time. The fill- ing over the sewer settled in time, as a result there has been a depr in the center of the street ever since. It is hoped that this will now be reme- died, as the paving has to be taken up and relaid.. The bridge company is working all of the men to be obtaited. The stone pavers began work yesterd afternoon, and arc pushing the trac layers. EVANS. Toa Fast a llorle. A serious accident occurred on Lower Broadway Tucsday evening, by which “Doc.” Roberts and his brother were soverely injured. They had hired a horse and buggy of Mr. James for the purpose of taking a ride. The animal was a vicious one, and resented an affliction of the whip by running away. A collision with a lumber wagon re- sulted, and both occupants of the buggy were thrown out, receiving severe cuts and bruises on the curbing, The acci- dent happened just below the water- works pumping station, near the end of the paving. The record of fast running freight trains wag broken yesterday on the Burlington, between this city and Cres- ton.
