Pr consulting rooms, All business str conlidental, Oftice 5 ner Main stree After countless defeats at the hands of the various clubs of the City league, the Council Bluffs *‘profession- als” mude up their minds that they could not play ball a little bit, and turned their attention to the nines of the smaller towns of this section, in the hope of winning an occasional game. The result shows that they still overes- timated their abilities as ball players, for they continue to meet with defeat after defcat. It was really pitiable to see how the common, every-day fellows from the little country towns literally wiped up the eurth with the smart, scientific players of the Bluffs club. The small number of spectators usu- ually in uth.ml.mu divideld their time between ‘‘rossting” the players and guying the manuger, who could do nothing but daunce up and down in front of the grand stand, and attempt to imi- tate the kicking of his own inimitable Strock. Lixhibitions of this kind grew to be every day occurrences, and the long suffering public finally decided their forbearance had ceased to be a_viriue. The games had been patronized much better than their character warranted, still the management made no attempt to improve anything but the vecoipts. Whenever the newspap ored” the players the manager fairly howled and told of his great outlay in purchas- ing grounds in Athletic park, and fenc- ing the sam Now there is no reason why the Bluffs citizens should not have an opportunity to witness a good game of ball occasion- ally without going away from home. The only trouble season has been the closefisted policy of the mans ment, The story of the great out the grounds and the consequent ina- ity to expend move money was all a The facts of the re that expense was for the fence and id, and these were more than s paid for by the parties who advertising ~space on the: Closefistedness is the only thing that is respousible for the death of base ball in . Itis oped that some fit individual will be secured to manage a team next season, and there is no question as to its suc- cess. A movement is already on foot to organize a fine team, and to provide for its maintenance through the season. Shortly after 9 o'clock yesterday morning this entire community was shocked to hear that J. M. Phillips, a prominent resident of this city for nearly a third of a century. had fallen dead on the street. The deceased was enjoying almost perfect health up to the time of his death, notwithstanding his advanced age. He was still in ac- tive business life, and had clled at the oftice of the mayor at the city building on business of a personal'nature, just be- fore his sudden demise. The mayor was not there, and after some time, during which he became considerably axoned Mr. Phillips left to go to the mayor's residence on Vine street. ~ As he neared the corner of the street, opposite the lice station, he lwznmmd fell. The doctor transferred his attention’to him, and worked over him several hours. At one time his condition was considered quite serious. The third son, John, was at home at the time, and required the closest attention to counteract the effect of the newsof his father’s sudden death. The deceased was one of the oldest and most highly esteemed residents of the city. Last evening there was a goodly sized gathering at the Congregational par- sonage. There has lately been built an addition to the pastor’s residence, in the form of a kitchen, with numerous culinary conveniences. The history of this enterprise is unique. It will be re- membered that some time ago the *‘old rik skule™ entertainment was given with wonderful success. Over 8300 was realized for the church. A little later, nse to the demands for a repeti- tion, it was given again for the Women’s Christian Association hospital, and 8300 more was cleared. Numerons inquiries coming in from other places, three gentlemen, J. E. Harkness, P. M. Pryor and H. W. Tilton, prepared a pamphlet, giving in- structions as to how to arrange such an entertainment. These pamphlets were sold from Portla Me., to nd, Ore. As a result it is ted that the entertainments thus started have been the means of raising $25,000 for religious and charitable pur- poses.
