It was a very scrious drama, intonsely theatrio and stronuous, with plenty of declamatory material to delight its principal actors, and with the vim of its writer permeat- ing it thoroughly. The veunture was for the suke of Mr. Haworth, a young actor of excoptional promise, and thero s no euson for disappointment, although supported by two such actors as Joseph Wheelock and Frederick Paulding. BUILDING AT A STANDSTILL, The condition of the building trade here is one of extreme dullness, and within the last six months hulldmg has ned fully 50 per cent. One great cause of this flatness of the market is that the work of building has been overdone and has outstripped facilities for gravel. This is especially the case with the new city on the west side of Central Park, where unfinished walls and unrented houses tell their own tale. The houses there are entirely different from ola New York residences, and a Knickerbocker awakened fr his prave would need to have a special introduction to the new styles of I bethan and Queen Anne and Georgian architecture displayed there in tower and turret, balcony and recess, und ail sorts of gables and finials that cannot be properly classed. When an undee- ground railway traverses that scetion, and cross-town cars arve are allowed to run through the depressed cross roads in ~ Central Park, that section will take a new start. and fashion and wealth will throng it. But the single clevated road on the west side has failed to keep up the necessities of the situation it has brought about. Just now Fifth avenue thsphnfl the most ac- tivity in building, and its middle se tion, ubove the Fifith avenue hotel, being rapidly readjusted to the require- ments of business. Our wealthiest cit; zens are endeavoring to save Maddison avenue from the grasp of trade while uctantly yielding to the inroad on th avenue. The Vanderbilts seem to be the most urbed by the onward march of the storekeeper into the realm of fashion, and they try to resist it, but will find their palaces surrounded by trade before another decade has passed. ¥red Vanderbilt has bought out the building next the Union League oclub and lately occupied by a picture deale but this” will be only a drop in the bucket. ‘The picture man will turn up miling elsewherc on the avenue and will have enjoyed his profiitable specu- lation in aristocratic prejudices. REVIVALISM AS A BUSI Harrisom, the *‘boy preacher” thirty-six summers, has gone to Mount Tabor camp-meeting, on the Delaware & Lackawanna railroad, for a wrestle with the powers of durkness, after a fortnight's session at Sing Sing. At the latter pluce he said that he hud been the means of blessing and saving 1,000 souls. Buthe classes them que comprebiensively as “reclaimed,” “'sane- tified,” ‘“‘glovified,” ‘‘seeking light,” ete. 'In the same manner he counted up 8,000 souls saved here, but it would be diflicult to-day to lay one’s finger on 300 of them. However, it isall business. pter on the work of until $125 a week has nteed him, and the first paid in advance. He is business all through, and while he counts his pay accuracy, and suffers no one to double up on him, I have heard him double up the actunl numbar of his converts on an evening, and with the utmost complacency. At the outset I made up my mind to study these Harri son revival phenomena elosely and with- out bias, and I have been doing s0 for six months. and, while not dun g that good may have been doue in the mee ings, I doubt the permanence of his work and have lost taith in the man.
