Elder B. J. Kadford, associate editor of the Christian Standard, of Cincin- natd, O., but a resident of Eureka, TIL., was the principal speaker. His stylo is clear, happy and convincing, and he ranks among the yreat christian orators of the conntry. Dr. F. M. Kirkham, editor of the Oracle, of Des Moines, In., Eider T.J. Williamson, of Nebraska City, State Evangelist Barrow and Elder Johnson, formerly pastor of the church in this city, also talked briefly. The exorcises throughout were futeresting and impressive. THE FRANCES CLEVELAND CLUB. This club of winsome young ladies nuti- bers over thirty members, allof whom evince doep intercst in the success of democracy and the return of the first lady of the union to the white house. About half of the club attended the state convention yesterday. The move was an innovation upon the usual, and ‘was particularly noticeable in view of the fact that democracy hus openly disapproved of women in politics, But hard hea lented in this event and the ladi treated with chivalric courtesy, but their counscls were not noticeably sought, and their faces beamed with intelligence upon all questions sprung during tho deliberations of the convention. The members of the club hore wero also present at the meeting of the state loague at Bohanon's nall last night. 1t was & goodly portion of the mtelligence at- tending. The bachelor democrats of Lin- coln were also there. Some of them are now rather inclined toward universal suf- frage. Curtis is captain of the club and Miss Amclia Forbes marshal. They were accompanied by the Misses Della Robinson, Carrie Bricker, Carrie Cowen, Addie Bricker, Ida Kahil, Emma Stewart, Lena Piasecke, Tilla Greizer, Rena Gordon, Della Piasocke, Blanche Ryan and Amy Bricker, DEMOCRACY'S CENTRAL COMMITTEE, The democratic state central committee- elect met at room 4 of the Windsor hotel this morning at 8:80 to organize and arrange for the campaign. But little business, however, was transacted. Hon. John A. McShane was elected chairman and C. E. Montgomery sec- retary. Authority was given the chairman to select an executive committee of five to report on call, and he was so notified by letter. A few other minor matters were de- cided upon and the committee adjourned without date, but subject to the orders of either the chairman or secretary. It is stated that an carly meeting will be held and day and date will bo decided upon as soon as a conference with Chairmsn Me- Shane can be held. This meeting was the last of the work attending the democratic state convention. GARELESS CONTRACTORS. Jack Kaden commenced suit against the city of Liucoln yesterd afternoon in the county court for alleges damage for a fl cellar during some of the late rains, in that sum, due to the condition in ‘which the contractor left the grade tronting his place of business and cellar. He stajes that the surface was left so that water would paturally run into his cellar; that it @id 80, and his cellar was greatly damaged thereby, and that the city is responsiblo to him for the damage done. He prays for Judgment for equitable damages and costs of suit. Inquiry was yesterday made by Bss repor- tersto discover who are the Dunning and Gregg, mentioned in a Bxn telegram from Chi s hailing from Omaha. ‘There is no “John THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: FRIDAY AUGUST 31, 1888, £ TP T O NN BT WO SN Dunning” to be found in the directory, and in neither of the mercantile agencies nor among the coal men and capitaliets could any information be secured comcerning the Omauha Coal Mining company. The name of “W. Gregg' could not be found either in the directory or in the business centres. The fact of Omaha's establishing an English and American syndicate (limited) in_Chicago, was considercd by most of the leading cay talists an unusual and highly improbable u dertaking. At all events, they knew nothing of the scheme and less, if that were possiblo, of the promoters, and were, in fact, disposed 0 look upon the wholo matter s a fran This impression was strengthendd by the suspicious manner in which the episode was brought to a close. Ll BRICKS ARE DEAR. A Trunk Full Cost Bertie $40. Bertie Young, a modest and pretty but lively young siren, who has been boarding with Frankie Clifton on Ninth street, was up before Judge Borka yesterday charged with obtaining money under false pretenses. She left Clifton’s on Saturday last, and go- ing over to Lillie Maun's, another landlady on the same street, informed her she wanted to board with hor. Sho said her trunk was at Clifton's, and was being held for $1.80 'back board. Lillie said she would pay off the indebtedness and get her trunk. This she did, but_that same afternoon Bertie left Mann's and did_not re- turn, Miss Mann opened _ Young's trunk, and found in it instead of the gaudy wardrobe a fine assortmont of brick-bats, Deer bottles and oyster cans, neatly wrapped upin old newspapers and’ rags. This n- censed Manu very highly and she had Bertie arrested. She was tried, and despite the fact that she had quite an array of legal talent to dofend her, she was found guilty and fined $40 and costs. —— Those who take Dr. Jones’ Red Clover Tonic never have dyspepsia, costive- ness, bad breatn, piles, pimples, ague Young and malaria, r appetite, low spirits, headache or kidney troubles. McShane for governor of the state was no surprise to the local democratic politicians, “He is the best man we have, and we're going to put him through,” said one leading wire-puller of the Third ward. “The temperance plank in the republican platform will kelp us out, but his record is a good one, and he'’s bound to win. I don't think much of the rest of the ticket, though," said another of McShane's ardent admirers, “I think they have put up their strongest | | man, d & leading republican, “but that won't make auy difference, as they can't overcome our 25,000 majority.
