Lo iy SIEGE OF SEBASTOPOL. Preparations for the Production of the Spectacle. The public is becoming moderately familiar with the outline of® the spectacular display which opens this week in Omaha, *The Siege of Sebastopol.” No conception of the im- mensity of the enterprise, however, can be obtained from a printed description. A re- vorter visited the grounds yesterday and though still in a comparatively embrionic stage and by daylight the scene was suftic- iently impressive to convince him that the citizens and visitors of Omaha were soon to have an opportunity of witnessing the most magnificent theatrical and spectacular display ever produced in this country, The spectator, from a comfortable seat, looks over an artificial lake 230 feet in length with its war ships and skiffs plying to an: fro. Beyond this is a sodded stage and the earthworks slopmg gradually to the city, with the frowning battlements of the Mala Koff, an imposing centre piece, and the Redan to the left. Over the slopes back of the city, lies the broad expvanse of the Biack sea, with the purple mountains in the dis- tance. When the spectacle is viewed by the light of thirty or forty arc lamps, with the gay umforms of the troops in the foreground and storming over the heights, the ships, forts and intrench- ments belching forth their shells and flames, the sky flhu\lnf with fireworks, and the mas- sive walls of the Malakoff toppling and crumbling before the cannonading, the effect is more easily unagined than described. The battle, of course, will be the great feature, aud & glance behind the scenes into the armories and arsenals, magazines and buildings where workmen are preparing the various descriptions of fireworks, indi- cate what it wul be like, but’ there are other spect: features worthy of note.
