( \rl\m , over About 10 o'clock yesterday ing the progress of the shower, citizens in the central and eastern portions of the city were startled by an unusvally vivid flush of lightning, followed by a peal of thun- der that fairly shook the earth. It was in- stantly conjectured that the electric fluid had struck somewhere in the vicinity and in- quiries were made to locate the exact spot. The first place found to have been visited by the destructive current was the residence of Cu M. Hirl, on Oa land avenue, The bolt struck the building at the south end of the gable, and rau down the roof, teving shingles in every direction, and tearing and splintering the roof boards in a most reckless manner, It circled around the chimney, and then entered the house, jump- ing through the attic to the floor and tearing a hole through the ceiling of the room under- neath. Here all trace of it was lost, and its path of egress from the building is unknown. Mrs. Harl was standing in a room on the lower floor, directly under the spot where the ceiling was pierced by the bolt, and received a very severe shock., She says that the cur- rent seemed to pass directly under her spine, morning, dur- many of the and she Las swce suffered heavy pains in ber * bacl. She {s'in delicate health ‘and it is feared that the fright incident to the shock may produce unploasant results, The domes- tic was ironing in ‘the kitchen, and the flat iron w. fuid. By far the heaviest shock was residents in the vicinity of Piereo o streets in the eastern part of the city shaft skipped along on the telephon leading to John Beresheim's residence s jerked out of her hund by thie frisky felt by the Frank street, until it reached the large tonwood tr near the coruer of P through which the wire was strung. It was in these trees that the rampageous bolt seemed to turn itself loose, for it played all kinds of _pranks, chasing iip one tree and down another until the whole street seemed to be a perfect blaze, and the trecs were torn, splintered and shat’ tered so that they will ‘have to be removed. ‘These trees are in front of the neat little cot- tage of Mra. Walters, who was at hoiie at the time, l\ml vas 80 badly prostrated she may e cover completely from the shock. She was thrown to the loor and re- mained unconscious for nearly two hours, but was finally restored to consciousness by Drs. Green and Tacey. Sunflowers ave all right in their place, but their place is not in the heart of the city. A reform is sadly needed in Council Bluffs Vacant lots are allowed to be uncared for, and weeds have it their own way, growing so rank and tall as to almost hide the sight of all adjacent improvements. The other duy the canning works folks hired a man to cut down all the weeds within two blocks, ‘T'be ning up made a marked improvement in that vicinity, and wig an exampie worthy of speedy imitation. It cost but a trifle, and counted for much. Property owne do mot realise how bhurtful impressions e are formed o( their ‘-nr-}n! lots just from the unkept condition in which they ara allowed to rematn_month ,after month. A large lot on Flourth street hius been so covered with weeds that when the other day the owner had them cut off, ke could hardly rec- ognize his own lot. Near the depo! allowed to grow up a large quantity of ‘sun- flowers and weeds, and strangers alighting from a train naturally concludo this is a vil- lage. There is no excuse for resident prop- erty owners, and the vacant lots owned by non-residents should be clearcd off by the city, and the cost taxed up if néceséary. There are numbers of vagrants duily fed at the ity expense, and these men might well be employed in the war on weeds. phebetiy-Susciid Get pr the box, on (ull!n\nm peuchos, by Fult line of gheet music at Counci Blufts Music Co., 224 Broadway b=k Sasibigini Real Brothers-In-Law.
