WHY ECANIS A DR INQUENT. Another Chapter in ths Controversy Given to the Public. \ A FORMAL COMPLAINT IGNORED, | . FIu. Mr. Dun- phy, then T will at ouce and with pleasure * pay the amount of my subscription. Meuntime I mu spectfully demand that my name be at onc delinguent subseribers which is displayed at the church door. Yours very faithfully, Rev. M. A. KEXNEDY. PATRICK EaAN, Mr. Egan stated that he subsequently met Rev. Mr. Kennedy and ascertained from him that he had pleeed this letter before Bishop Bonacumn, who declined to make any amends and who stated that he would continue to keep Mr. Egan's name on the list at the ;:hun:h door; hence the injunction proceed- ngs. “What have you got to say to Rev. Mr. Dunphy’s statement in regard to what tran- spired ot the meeting of the Land league, at which the resolutions condemnatory of the papal rescript were passed “Mr. Dunphy is quite right in his state- ment that it wis he and not I3ishop Bonacum who attended that weeting, and it is so set forth in the petition. But I may say right here that it is he and not Bishop Bonacum ‘who is at the bottom of all the trouble that is brewing in the congregation. The resolu- tion in question was framed and introduced by Mr. Sutton at the suggestion of Mr. John Fitzgerald and was in substance about the same as the resolutions subsequently passed by the forty Irish Catholic members of par tiament in Dublin, and of which resclutions Archbishop Walsh, even after the last encyclical leiter of the pope, ex- ressed his hearty approval, I wd nothing to do, either rectly or indirectly, with framing or introducing the resolutions, and had not even spoken in support of, or expressed my approval of, them when fhis young man, Mr. Dunphy, stood up in the meeting, attributed vo me the suthorship of the resolutions and made upon me a most unwarrantable and indecent per- sonal attack—an attack which T claim to have amounted to a public scandal. Next day I called upon the bishop to make complaint about this attack, and he, without my knowl- edge of the circumstances except such ver- fon as he had received from Mr. Dunphy, sed to see me, and when I wrote him he ud not the courtesy to answer my letter. As usual, this wrong step on the part of the bisbop has led to others. I have no versonal juarrel with Bishop Bonacum or his secre- %{y except such as they forced upon me, pon the other hand I have no desire to cou- te with the provrietor of the Potvin block or their personal friendship. 1 want ‘‘peace with honor," but if they want to force a petty gfiuwu me they will find me a fighter, 1 ke not begin this thing. and if Bishop acum and his secretary want to act weutlemen—not to say anything of thoir obligations us christian ministers—they will to me the amends which I feel, and which they must foel, I am entitied to." “Mr. Egan, do you think that any stef will be t to expel you from the Catholic churchi” “No, sir. Bishop Bonacum has no such power. I have no quarrel with the church or its doctrines. Iam as good a Catholic as Bishop Bonacum, and 1 belive a little bit Dbetter, because if § knew I had done a wrong, } w?uld have the moral courage to apologize for it."” WARD POLITICS IN LINCOLY. ‘The republicans of the Fifth ward met in caucus last evening at 8 o'clock at the church on South Eleventh street. Hon. M. B. Cheney presided at the meeting. Resolu- bons were adopted declaring for William Leese for attorney general. The fact is significant, It leaves the railroad crowd of that ward out in the cold. John R. Clark was denied a place on the delogate ticket, snd & resolution was passed declaring ngaiust the issuance of proxies to_the county gonvention, Mr. John R. Clark cannot even obtain & seat in the coming state convention, according to the flat of the caucus. It was damp evlnmf for the Burlington crowd. r. Ben- ton will also occupy a seat in the rear, while matters look & hittle hopeful for Mr. Carter. “The First and Second wards also endorsed Attorney General Leese. on. J. L. So goes the battle, Caldwell is urged as a candidate aturo by the republicans of the His Tecord made two years ago while in the house is pronouuced *good and upon it he seeks renomination and el tion. “Any attempt to down Mr. Lecse is rompily buried out of sight and he will go fore the state convention with the solia vote of Lancaster county. ON TRIAL FOR ARSON. At 6 o'clock last evenng William Neall, Edward Morris_aud A. J. Morgan were put on trial for setting the Parks barn on five, and while it was burning robbing the boys of the fire department, a report of which was made m Tux" Bek atthe time. These lads were arrestod on suspicion of having com- mitted tho crime, bub the evidence was not suficicnt to hold them, and they were dis- missed. Other parties ure under surveilance but no further arrests will be made unle the proof in hand is sufiicient to make a v strong case and gives assurance that convie- tion will follow. CITX_ NEWS AND NOTES. Hon. Brad Slaughter, of Fullerton, is in the city. He says that Hon. Meiklejohn is a candidate for lieutenant governor, reports to the contrary notwithstanding.
