MR, ECAN AND THE BISHOP. More Concerning the Former's Bub- ecription to St. Theresa Church. WHY THE NAMES WERE POSTED. The Intention Was to Remind Delin- quents of Their Oblizations and Not to Cast Ridicule Upon Them. 1020 P Streer, LaNcows are two \d, appre August @, sides to all contro- versi iating this fact, TiHE Bre 1o ntative this morning mo- destly knocked at the parsonage door of St. Theresa church, and for a brief audience hop Bonacum. “Not at home,” suid the lady swerod the summons, “but walk ing 3 will find Mr. Dunphy or Father Law- rence in the patlor Nothing loth, the hospitable invita- tion was nccepted, aud kindly gree with these gentlomen were soon ex- changed. “1 be that you gentlemen werc joined in the injunction suit with Bishop Bonacum by Mr. Egan, were you not?”’ **Ye “we were. “Can you consistently furnish THE Be with a strtement of your version of the matter, and if 50, how did you r the service?” service upon Dunphy, “was a great surpi don’t know what to make of it *But what about Mr. Egan’s subscrib- ing #500 to the church building fund, and refusing to pay it?” “Last spring, when the building of the addition was under consideration, Mr. Egan subscribed $500 to the fund, one-fifth of it to be paid on demand and the balance every two months, in equal payments, or i on or before the 1st of Janua I do not know that Mr. gan ha; 1o pay his subscription.” “This subscription as made condi- tional upon kind treatment and contin- ued church fellowship in good standing, was it not? No, sir} LixcoLs BUREAU oF Tar OMAna Ber, } The asked who an ings * they answered pleasantly, said Mr. and we no conditions of kind were made or implied. I know this to be true. Why, Mr. Egan was made one of the building committee, a position he cepted and retains to this aay. There coula have been uo reason for condi- tions at that time.” **What about Mr. Egan’s name being posted upon the walls ef the church among other delinquent subscribers, and his indebtedness being spoken of publicly from the altar *There is re nothing in that., ‘While it is true that a number of names were written upon a bulletin, with the amount of their subseriptions set opposite them, and hung up in the church at the entrance door, it was simply done as a reminder of their ob- ligations, and to show the liberality of the donors, and not to throw any one into ridicule or contempt. Ot or twice when the contractor: had finished certain portions of their work on the new addition, the Dbishop suggested the fact to all who had subseribed to the building fund and were deblors, but in no way singled out Mr. Egan or any one else. This he did from the altar, but in the custor nd no one else took umhrage, and » were good men who were due on subseription atement is not true that threats have been made that Mr. Egan's good name will be pa- raded before the public as one who can not or will not pay his debts.” Jere y ent at the meeting of the National Irish league in this city?” ““Yes, sir; and I opposed the rescript resolution favored by Mr. Egan, and not Bishop Bonacum, as stated. If the bishop had anything to say against it he was very mild in his opposition. I moved to table the resolution and op- posed its passage, not because Mr. Egan avored it, but because I believed it to be wrong and that it ought to be defeated. You can put it down that Mr. Egan gubscribed #500 for the building fund, but prescribed its payment upon no conditions, and to my knowledge he has not refased to pay his subscription. The bishop has treated him kindly; he has not published his indebtedness or sought in any way to bring him into ridicule or contempt. Indeed, he is kind toall of his flock and very con- siderate and has made no threats that his name wiil be published in con- nection with his church debt.” “Father St. Lawrence, have you any- thing to add to what Mr. Dunphy has stated ?” o, sir; only I think that my being oinod in the case is a mistake, result- ng from the fact that Mr. Dunphy’s given name and surname are the sam The lawyers could have made the mis- take naturally. I know nothing about the matter only in a g ral these facts Mr. Duuphy has stited to you.” MORE RAILROAD CONDOLENCE. 'he Beatrice board of trade fathers alrond wails and protests agaiust a reduction of freight tariffs. The fol- lowing resolutions were passed at a meeting of the board last evening, and are forwarded for the consideration of the state board of transportation: ““Whereas, The state board of transporta- tion has demanded of the railroads of Ne. braska a further reduction of freight rat amounting to nearly 15 per cent from the re duend ffs mutually agreed upon by the state board and the railroads in Novemver last, and “Whereas, We believe pressure upon the resources of the roads is exercising a most harmful influence else- where and is depreciating railroad values and Plucing an offectual stop upon railway exten- existing corporations and upon the ion of projected new lines, be it therefore “Resolved, That we respectfully and ear- nostly request the state board to recall their recent order and, for the present, permit iho tarills to remain’ unchanged; that we be- lieve western capital will not dechine its aid in the future development of our state if our authorities continue a policy so devressing in its effect upon railway securities; thut inas- muck s there has been no demand whatever, on the part of the people, for additional con cessions we fail to see any necessity for in- sisting that such shall be made; that we be- Jieve that if these still lower rates are to re- main operative we must anticipate the with- drawal of many of the freight and passenger facilities we now possess, through the en- forced economy the roads wfllshe compel- led to practice in order to secure adequate returns; that we are convinced that for their int prosperity, the state and the railroads re mutually dependent and that to cripple and harass an agency so powerful in hasten- ing the onward progress of our common- wealth and the welfare and havpiness of its cople, is a policy we cannot too heartly con- lemn and which, if insisted on at this time, we chacaoterize 48 unwise, unreasonable and ill-timed." A petition numerously signed by the business men of Norfolk was received by the state board of transportation this morning. It is as follow NonvoLk, Neb., August 8, 1888—T0o the State Board of Transportation: We respectfully solicit the attention of the state board of transportation to the fol- lowing: We regret its recent action in insist- any ) the such gonstant ing upon a further reduction of freight rates throughout the state. The cat bit Mr. Lewis Pieffor in the face, infilicting quite a wound, and had to be choked off. The cat af- terward whipped off three large dogs, as it is presumed the dogs became ul- armed through their instinet at know- ing the cat was rabid. The cat jumped ata yearling colt and seratehed the colt in the fuce. The cat tried to enter the house of Mr. Bartlett, who to further test the condition of the cat, slightly d the window and stuck an iron poker through. The cat fought the poker hard. The following day the cat was shot. These boys were bitten on Tune 1888, and on Sunday, July 1, they became alarmed about their condi- tion. and on Monday, July 2, they went to Mr. K, D.
