THE MANATT INVESTICATION. Another Day Spent in Considering the Alumni Charges. SEVERAL WITNESSES EXAMINED. il isting Discord Alleged to Have Been Brought About by the Chancellor's Haughtiness, Sarcasm and lrony. LiNCOLY BUREAU op 711 Oseans Bre, ) 1020 P Sriex LaxcoLy, duly 12, § this morning the board of re. gents again took up the clarges against Chancellor Manatt, made by a committes of the alumni of stute university, an inves. tigation of which was formully begun yestor. day. 1t is charged in the specitications of At 0 o' the umni “that theee'is a thoroug lack of symputh, nd fidence bel ‘en the ity an uldents of the umiversity on the one Land and the chancellor upon the other, produced and brought about by ‘man neeisi’ and dietation, sarcasm and moncy, used by the chancellor in his with the facvity and student; st relutions and that his retention us the head of the university hus wrids its fu sss. and perpetmity. n support of this the testimony of Mossrs. Polk, Clarke, Pound, out and Polk, former students of the university, has been taken and reported in substance. While it is true that these gentlemen thus far in the investi- wtion have testified against the chancellor, 8 must be remembered that he hue not introduced a sin- luble 1 his own defense nside ut would naturally develop in a rigid sxamination. And to this time not a tiess has charied special ifie un »88 on thoe part of the ¢ The testimony of Prof. Hitchcock that he has not regurded the actions of or Manatt in bis relations with the faculty altoge “open and honest,” the chancellor states, yot react’ in his' favor, as the eircumstan attendiug his aetions aro such that they must be weighed in conjunction, and that a thor- otigh understanding of both sides of the issue 1 make the adverse testimony altogether in. Prof. Hiteheock's testimony n general was ratlicr in favor of the chancellor. He was alled first this mornipe for a brief cross- nination, & d to clearly settle the s of & paper he had drawn us the sult of a conference with Profs. Howard and Edgson. This paper was addressed to the resents and had been prepared for the sig n of members of the. faculty. It sim iy cssed i sense of the gravity of the situation and urged the regents o avoid all unwise agitation so far as possible At this point Chancellor M it asled that the board of ents at on nd for Prof. Edgson, who is now in Chautaugna, M Y., he desired to be present to testify on th 1 conspiracy aguinst him on the part of the faculty. Wilson stated that the professor had written a lotter disclaiming wuy kuowledge of a conspiracy to dethrone or'in any way injure the chancellor, offeiaily or socially, and that the letter was in the hands of *Prof. Sherman, who would be placed upon the stand, to iden u the lette and the signa tuie to it, that its genuincuess might not be come a matter of question. s was done, and the letter filed and the board took the sending for Kdgsou under advisen Prof. MeMillun was next called. He stated that he had been cou 1 with the univer- sity for the past twelve years, and during the most of that time tad held the G chai He also stated that his relations with the chaneellor during the first year of the present administration were rather pleasant 1 otherwise; that they were both mem bers of the same church, and movers in the same cirele of society that & coo'ness sjrung up betwe them, resulting from the chancellor’s inter- terence with what he thought to be the prov- s of hus individual worl; that while he was doing everything possible under the con dition of his health, the chancellor had bur- dened him with additional work, having un- warrantedly thrown upon him the instruction of classes in philosophy, and thus addinz ad- ditional responsilibitics that he was not able to bear. The cross-examination tended to show that tho chancellor's interposition in his work was because he desired to elevato and wdvance the work in Greek that might in the future suffer to some extent by reason of MeMillan's mfivmity —growing deatness and in no way disparaging his w for it was all that could be asked or. expected. Ago was telling upon him; his deafness might grow: succession might beeome nec sary. In that event MeMillan wis to be r tiréd to the library department on a profes- bf. MeMillan had reduced his grievances i Ink and submitted them to the board He recited some of the causes that had lod him to lose. confidence in the ability of Chancellor Mavatt to remain chief exceutive of the state university, among them charging - interference, inte tion, dictation in mutters that belonged 1o him by right of his position and the dig- nity of his chair: haughtiness and sarcasi and irony. Further investigation, however, developed the fact that the chancellor had refused to sanction the appointment of his 80D to a position as tntor, although warmly endorsed by the facu'ty and recommended for the position, This fact may have lod to the estrangement botween the professor and the chancellor. Prof. Hicks, of the chair of geology, took the stand just at the dinner hour. Prof. Hicks testified that the chancellorhad declured to the witness that he would oppose tke nomination of Conway McMillan, Prof. McMillan's son, as instructor in zooloizy, be- o the father was hostile to this univer- administration; that the chancellor's v and bearing’were notalways plens- \d, urbane in his relations with the icholson being sworn, testified that icellor Manatt, s e LWO Yo rome to his room and stated to him t vers of his class, doing practical work in the laboratory, had complained that they were sverworked and - required to devote too mue time in the lakoratory, which prevented their going forward wiih iheir other studies; that he (Nicholson) asked four or five membors of his s(ll. deuts, if they had made any such statement which cousisted of twenty-four ar fly: o the chaucellor, and these four or fi 0 students - that were asked informed him that they had@ not made any puch statements, and upon this statement he based his ch rgo ot disingenigusness on the part of the chancellor A very brief cr dmination on the P of the elicited _ the fact - that Prof, 0 knew *wher he testified - thy wembiers of the class’ had b to the chancellor and complained that worked his dep without negl I Nicholsow, chancellor provi measure: tiove th complaining stud: such overwork, thus showing that his sta ment in chief was such u distortion and dey as justly nd its and fals therehy willingness - of the'professor, ily truthful, to he- inlluenced by wof of - ‘prejudice .and _passion or' hurried beyond the -facts Ly his 2l aud tho zeal of those who said the chau ccllor must go.
