I —————————— st e E \ .1 X THE OMAHA DAIL/ STILL SHROUDED IN MYSTERY. Harry Durfee’s Abrupt Departure Causes Much Speculation, VARIOUS THEORIES ADVANGED, fNone of Them, However, Seem to Offer a Satisfactory Solution -of the Problem—State Contracts Awarded—General Notes. 1020 P Srreer, Lixcor, The Harry Durfee case stills hangs fire. E. B. Durfee, the cousin who brought the Buits against him to save himself from pecu- niary loss, went out this morning to fore- tloso the mortgage on the Dorr property. Durfee's strango leave-taking of his friends, old haunts and proporty is still considered a matter of vory grave mystery, Some fivo years ago, with hiscousin, Mr. E. B. Durfee, he established the first street-car line opor- nted in the city, under the name of the Cap- ftal City Street Railway company, in which interest ho continued for a_time, when he traded and transforred his rights and title to the business to Frank Sheldon for a_quarter section of school land, situated six miles due north of the city, and had he held on to this property one year longer the lease would !m\'c expired and the land would have b his with a good and perfect title. friends insist that financial embarra could not have been the cause of his abrupt good-hye; that he had sufticient property to more than cover allof his labilitics, and will still have something left aftor all the ex- ecutions aud foreclosures are through, not- withstanding the great expense attending such methoas of settlement. There is but pno_solution, probably, to_the mystery of his sudden and abrupt 'disappearance, and it may bo found in the fact that he had hecome 80 dissipated that he could no longer meet and greet his old friends of respectability and worth without the cutting pangs of con- geicnce inherent to adeeply sensitive nature That he still had friends who would stay by him through evil and good report is evidenced by the fact that he had been and continued to keep company with oneof the most estimable ladies of the city, lovely in person and presence, to the last, and who in no_way sought to furtber his social ostracism by discarding him, but tried to build him up and keep him on his old plane of promiso and respectability, This heory, his friends claim, must be the solu- tion of'the problem of his @oing, or behind it lurks a story yet untold that may have to bo unraveled und sifted by the criminal courts of the state. Loxe Pixe, July 2.—[Special to Tne Bre|.~In glancing over the map of the state of Nebraska, and in the northwestern por- tion of it particularly, I find that there have developed and been organized a great many towns and cities of the sccond class. Six years ago a person would have hardly thought such dovelopment and improvement of this scction possible, but such is the case. Long Pine is one of these small cities, and is keep- ing pace with any of them in the state. Early this spring there were bouds voted here for the purpose of putting 1 a fine systom of waterwo! and connect them with the famous *‘Seven" springs, and pump the water, cool and fresh, from the finest living spring in the world. The contract was awarded to F. K. Felton, of Omahy, and on last ‘]‘Imr'mll\i; witnessed the completion and acceptanca of as nice and complete a_system asthore is in the state. The was sot apart as a day of entertainment, and a fine celebration was held, with music from the Long Pine Cornet band, and everything went along nicely and overybody was cntertained royally by the citizens of this wide-awake ing city. The councils and vi of the neighboring towns visitec on that day to take notes and se ings of afine system of waterworks. meeting was presided over by Captain Whittimore, an enterprising and souled gentleman of the place, and after the band rendered some very spirited and ani mated music they were followed by ladies and gentlemen rendering some fine vocal music. Addresses were delivered by nearly all of the most prominent personages of tho city, and thoy gave a short history of the growth of this place, showing that its im provements were due to the push and enter of its citizens, and that this was the thousand feet of pipe laid. Other gentlen from the neighboring towns also delivere: addresses and extolled the advantagos of this city and the admired and envied the push and snap of the citizens. The mecting up and everybody then repaired to the woods along the Long Pine river and partook of the fatted calf. The feast was all that the best whetted appetite could have wished.
