2 ,..F__—-_— THE NEBRASKA CHAUTAUQUA. Enthusiastic Ratifications of the Republican Nominations. HEAVY RAINS AND WASHOUTS. Wrains Abandoned—Mugwumps Re- pent-—J. Sterling Morton Sorry— DLrowned—Killed By Lightning —*Qorsos" for Nebraska City, The Summer City dt Crete. Crete, Neb., June 25 ccial to T Bre.|—The assombly grounds- are now in readiness for the multitude of people who purpose attending the seventh session of the Nebraska Chautauqua, which convenes the day after to-morrow, The vanguard of this multitudo has already arrived and found com- fortable quarte in the Summer City A casual glance over the ample grounds shows that no pains have been spared to make thom s nearly as possible all that could be reason ably desired. All the buildings and additions have been completed, the campus mown, the ve cleared of surplus growth, and the ents pitehed. What great improvements have been made in the appearance ana appoint. ments of the assembly grounds are evident to the observer us soon as he enters the gates. A matorial point in this regard is the prosence of so many new aud handsome buildings. The enlargement of the pavilion @end the dining ball add much to the appear- ance and convenionco of these structures. The Presbyterian headquarters are especially unique and attractive; the Y. M. C. A. build- ing also presents a pleasing appearance and the G. A. R. building will be no less pleasant $0 the eye when it is provided with the broad double verandas which the builders propose mdding to it cre another yoar., The 500 tents now distributed over the grounds—here in long, prim rows, and there fn picturesque coafusion--make a very pretty picturc and constitute a veritable city of Rents. It is the well ordered encampment of ® great army, an army not of warriors, but of seekers aftor physical, mental and spiritual pleasure and profit. 'All_that is needed to perfect this popular and _rapidly-growing Bummer city on the banks of the big blue, is fhe busy life that will soon surge through its #hady streets, and fill its pleasant cottages end multitudinous canvas residences, Besides the 500 tents, the grounds now con- fain about thirty substantial fraie buildings. Of these twelve are private cottages, seven e headquarters buildings, and the rest are alls, ofiices, stores, luncheon rooms, ete. *hese frame buildings, nearly all of whic! h are Yoth large and attractive, give an air of thrift and permanance to the grounds which they would not otherwise possess. Threo car loads of tent furniture have ar- rived, and tent-dwellers can purchase it on the grounds at cost price, or rent it at roa- sonable rutes. ‘Those who have this matter In charge have a large and well selected tock of tent furniture, and will offer it at tnuch better terms than could be obtained last year. It is the object of the assembly 0t t0 make money on these articles sold or ented to tent-dwcllers, but simply to obtain the cost price. Several dozen row boats have been pro vided, and are now swinging idly at their moorings near the hall in the grove, await- ing the coming of the floating population that every year can be found on the river at all gorts of hours. The little si $Belle of the Blue, has been ne Y gnd painted, aud presents a brave appear. ance. It will doits part to increase the en- Joyment of v ors, and its familiar whistle, Svhich hus been jocosely likened to an Alpine horn, will rend the cars of nervous mortals and awaken the cchoes that slumbering along tho willowy river banks and among the wooded hills. 1t is o matte of congratulation that the ssembiy workers who come here from broad will have comfortable spartments in unning hall, that their meals will be served n the largo dining room of the same build- ng and tnat they will be rom the in- conveniences and - annoyances of previc jears.
