THE OMAHA THE DAILY BEE. COUNCIL BLUFFS. OFFICE Deltvered m- Carrier in An( Part of the City at e wenty Cents Per W eek, H W.TILTON, MANAGER. TELEPHONES: BUsINese OFFIC Niowt ED1TOR, MINOR MENTION, N. Y. Plumbing Co. New spring goods at Reiter" The city council meets this Meeting of the board of education to-night. The Chicago visitors who departed yester- day, numbered forty-six. Allare invited to attend tne evening's study with the chautauqua circle to-night at the Mueller Music hall. Several of the Missouri Valley republicans came to the Bluffs yesterday to embark for Chicago with their brethren of this city Encampment No. 8, Union Veteran Legion, meets this evening. Business of importance will be considered and a full uttendance of members is desired. A petition has been presented to the school board asking that the new school building on the Washington avenue grounds may be lo- cated in the center of the grounds instead of on one side as contemplated. Colonel W. I, Sapp has received a telegram from his son announcing that Mrs. Sapp has suffered a relapse and 18 aguin dangerously low. Tho sad intelligence calls the colonel to New York immediat A hilarious female by the name of Peterson, who was laboring under the in- spiration’ of a little prohibition fluid on South Main street Jast evening, necessitated the assistunce of two policomen and the patrol wagon to escort her to the cooler. Every committeeman is expected to begin to-day finishing the chautauqua gubseription, which should be this week. Of the $10,000 needed from Council Bluffs there re- main but a few thousand to be raised, and this should be sccured this we It can be if each committeeman goes to work promptl; A petition is being ilated among the grocery firms of the city in which they agree 10 close their places of business at 7 :30 o'clock every evening from to-day until the 30th of September. The majority of firms hav signed it, and it will go into effect this eve- ning. The same o might well apply to the dry goods houses. C. H. Converse, of Oakland, arrived in the city Saturday evening from Tekamah, Neb., in charge of Edwin Bird, who is_accused of the larceny ot #130 from C.S. Robinson, a farmer residing near Oakland, and it is stated that there are several other charge to which he will have to answer. He was placed in ¢ of Sheriff O'Neil to await an investigation. Yesterday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, occurred the funeral services over the body of Mr Henry Miller at the family residence on Vine street, These were conduct the Re Mackey. Many friends gathered to pay their last respects to the memory of the d arted. ‘Harmony chapter, Western Star odge, No* 20, attended in a body, and at th cemetery theclosing ceremonies were cor ducted by this order. The new ks in 3ayliss park are com- pleted and work is ata standstill until the money for the foun be raised. The appearance of the park 18 much improved by the changes that have been made, and the proposed fountain is all that is needed to make it complete in every respect. The g is looking finely and the throngs of people who frequent the beautiful spot daily show that it is appreciated. The fountain should be forthcoming by all meaus. Yesterday's bull game at the N Athletic park resulted ina victor, Maynes, of Omaha, by a score of § to game was called at the end of the sixth in- ning ou uccount of the rain. The visitors 4 ant game, while the home team displayed the need of more pructice. Benn pitcaed a fair game, but the visitors dropped on to him for several safe hits. There is plenty of material in the club for a good nine, but it needs developing. 1 Since the order of the court has gone into effect, enforcing the closing of the saloons, there has been a marked de e in the number of drunks registered at the police station, and the “‘peclers’ are trying to make good the deficiency by giving alittle ¢ attention to the vags and other susp characters about the city. They Taked in nine of them yesterday in order to keep the smm-luy morning quota up to the usual num- er., There was no work done on the Hrondwnv paving Friday and Saturday, as the supply of gravel was exhausted.' Six more cars were received yesterday und the work will be resumed th . The gravel men promise that there shall be no more delay on this score. ‘The paving already done amounts to nearly twenty thousand yards, which makes quite a showing, as it is fully one-fifth of the work to be done. It makes a very fine drive along the property of the waterworks compuny, and is a fair sample of what the whole will be when completed. esterday was the quietest Sunday the city has known in some time, The absence of "the crowds of loafers who have infested the sidewalks in front of the saloons was very noticeable. 'These places were all closed and the police were not compelled to g0 through the alleys to try the back doors, ed and no cur- tains were drawn to hide what was going on inside, 8o that passers-by on the sldewalk could 'see that no business was being done, The change was much appreciated, being quite a relief from the condition of affairs on former occasions ‘The indignation of citizens does not lessen any, and the only query is whether the Mil- waukee & St. Paul railway company is throttling the Manawa motor line and hotel for its own sake, or doing the dirty work for some one else. The majority seem to feel hat the Milwaukee & St. Paul is being used o as a tool of local schemers who are de- ermined + <hoke off this enterprise, so dear o Council Bluf¥s, 1t is also be 1 by many that the general managers of this rail- ay are misled and misinformed by local epresentatives, und that if they understood he real situation in Council Bluffs, the motor ne would be allowed to cross their track. el 8. A SUNDAY WITHOUT SALOONS, The Day Quiet Enough to Suit Even the Policemen. A JOKER CALLS THE PATROL’ His Fun Ends Behind the Bars— Judge Reed Asked for a Drink —The White Hats Off for Chicago. Had His Laugh First. Charles Clemons, a butcher in the employ of Eugene Mottay, thought he would have a little fun yesterday afternoon at the ex- pense of the police, so he rang up the police station by telephone and asked that the pa- trol wagon be sent to Lanzendorfer's market 10 gather in a drunken butcher. The hood- lum ambulance was sent as directed, but there wns no one to be found at the desig- nated place, and Chief Lucas, upon investi- gating at the telephone exchange, found that the call had been sent in from Mot~ tay's place on Upper Broadway. The officers hurried up there and found the would-bé funny man just préparing to leave, and he was promptly arrested and taken to the cooler, where a charge of drunkenness and disturbing the peace was entered against him, He will have an op- portunity this morning to tell the court ali about his enjoyable experience in fooling the police. O - Cyclone a Winner. For some time past there has been a well settled convietion in the mind of Mace Wise, the veteran horseman, that the trotting stal- lion, Cyclone, owned by John Mullolland of this city, could not be driven a mile in 2:46 by his owner, He had faith in the horse, but doubted the ability of the driver. After a little talk Mace offered to bet Mulholland that he would not back his horse for £100 for amile in 2:46. John jumped at the offer, and the £100 a side was quickly put up. Sat- urday morning was the time agreed upon to settle the bet and Union Park the place. After a little warming up the horse came down to the sc d was sent off. He went to the half-mile post at a 20 clip, but was pulled after rounding into the stretch, and the wire on a very slow jog. The 7. It was the opimion of specta- the mile could easily have been made 1 2:30, as the horse was slowed to a walk a few rods below the wire. Shortly af- terward he was sent another mile in 2.333¢. When the fact is taken into consideration that the horse has been doing service in the stud this season, the speed shown is certainly remarkable, as he has received scarcely any training whatever thus far this year. He will not be started in any races during the July meeting, but it is v probable that if @ fall meeting is decided upon, the horse will be started, and the citizens will have an_op- portunity to see him lower his record. Sev- eral of the knowing ones claim that he will trot the Council Bluffs track in 2:20 this fall. Even Mace Wi 1ews on the subject have undergone a change. If he can drive the horse ten seconds better than Mulholland, as was cluimed before the trial, he cau send bim for a very lively mile. o - Off For Chicago. Yesterday afternoon the Republican club met at the headquarters and acted as an es- cort to those who are to attend the Chicago convention. At the line was formed and proceeded to the Northwestern depot where, at 4 o'clock the delegation embarked for Chicago. As it was Sunday there was no demonsf ion and the club preferred to wait until th return for bands, banners, ete. At Missouri Valley five cars of. visitors were attached to this train from the ““Elkhorn,” also two cars from Sioux City and two from the south, making nine cars in the train, At Ames the Des Moines train will attach itself to this making fifte ars, It is arrunzed $0 that the three delegate trains from lowa will arriye at Chicago at the same time. e e An Occidental on Prohlbition. The California visitors the other day came fully prepared for prohibition Iowa and had their cars weli laden with the wines of the occident. While driving about this city in the heat and dust, they naturally found their thirst greatly increased. One of the distin- guished visitors was very pleasantly cnter- tained by Judge Reed, of the Towa supreme bench. "After driving about for an hour or 50, the visitor cautiously remarked: **Judge 1 don’t want to do anything that is inconsist- ent with your Iowa laws or in violation of good citizenship in this state, but—excuse me if it is not proper—I real Would like to —join with you in a—glas of—water, ! The principal at traction offered, out of the regulur order, was the ball game between the home team and the C. E. Maynes, of Omaha, on the grounds of the new athletic park that has just been fenced, graded und otherwise im- proved by a fine amphitheater, ete., by the new management of the ball team. —————— Union Abstract company, 236 Main street. ———— Home From the Tournament. The visitors to Clinton returned home last evening and a more disgusted set it would be hard to find. In the free-for-all race the team was not allowed to use its own hose, couplings or pipe, but was compelled to use that furnishea by the association. The team made the run the unprecedented time of 8414 seconds, but it was claimed that an im- perfect coupling was made, only two and gne- half turns being made instead of three, and they were not credited with any time, thus completely shutting them out from protestng or anything of the kind, or a cut-and-tried freeze-out, the boys claim that it is the rankest thing on_record, and that the conduct of the Clinton man- agement in trying to stand, and then in perpetrating this outrage, make firemen pay for entering the grand is almost beyond comprehension. Bethune, of the Couneil Bluffs team, showed the Clin. ton folks what running wus by getting on the track and skipping 100 yards in 9 2-5 seconds. Next year the tournament will be held here, and visitors will have an opportunity to see some good racing and fair awards, bl L Stop at the Bechtele, - strike for Durlin Bros. 3 Broadway, I Lloyd V\Ill take your order.
