TRYING 70 PATCH UP PEACE, The Burlington People in a OConeil- fatory Mood. WILLING TOMAKE CONCESSIONS. A Suspecred Mlinols Wife Poisoner Arrested-—~A New Corporation— Vlosing Exercises at the Btate University. 1020 P Sanexr, Lixcory, June 11, The Burlington road is evidently trying to pateh a piece with the Lincoln wholesalers, and with that end in view President Porkins was n the city Saturday last in consultation with some of them. - After the jobbers havo wadea long fight in which the business people of the city have lent more than willing assistance, the road evidently proposes a compromise in which it will give concessions to some and rob others to make up for it, and then demand a cessation of hostilities. The principal part of the membershiv of the board of trade is not made vp of men who for personal concessious would surrender the fight ontire and leave others to remain with out relief at their expense, consequently it is safe to say that the fight is not off and will not be, and that the schemes of Mr. Perkins 10 placate two or three wholesalers at the ex- pense of the remainder of the city will not be tolerated. If the road has opened its oyes to the injustice it has done this place and tho citizensof the entire state as well, the board of trade will thankfully receive the portion of the just dues the road may give and con- tinuc at work to get justice for all in other things as well as the few whom the road soem desirous to placate. The effort of the road to got the fight on rates declared off will not succeed and the per- sonal solicitations of John R. Clark, at all times a backer and tool of the Bur- lington road, to have the people of Lincoln lie down and surrender will not be agreed to. There is alre: a dawn of emancipa- tion for Lincoln from the long ownership and dictation of the Burlington, and it is moviug hand in hand with a dawn for tho entirg state from the outrageous charges and discriminations that have existed for years. In the light of these events the embers of the board of trade who have fought the fight will not again subject themselves to the care and custody of railroads even under the specious pleas ad- vanced'that no new ruudl will be ovuilt if they do not. Lincoln has grown to a city and it will not again retrograde to a de- pendency on the charities of the Burlington road. It has been known for some time that the roads were preparing reductions in tariffs that they would put in force prior to this state convention to allay agitation and allow the roads to again control enough of the state officers and board of transporta- tionto keep the present rich fields of the state paying tribute to the roads and tho dividends on watered stock. Such schemes o cover the real issues are known, however, and the public is forewarned in time to be forearmed. LixcoLx Boneau or Tne Omana Bee, } Sherift Gri the city to-day, coming from his home Tecumseh, with a man named Samuel Goodrich whom he turned over to_the sheriff of Henry county, Tllineis. The day following eparture the family used sugar from the family sugar bowl and almost immediately were taken violently ill. Prompt measures taken early saved their lives, and the sus- pected sugar was subjected to an examina- tion which disclosed some ten grains of strychuine in it. Suspicion was at once placed upon Goodrich as the placed the poison there beforo leaving, and s ho had relatives at Tecumseh the sheriff to arrest him if found refore made the se found his man, A ror £0 ago Goodrich and his wife lived at Tecumseh and all was not harmonious at that time. Good claims that instead of his trying to take his wife's life that Tis life was’ in danger from her, and gives that as I||~xu,nsu|| for leaving his home for good ase will probably be of more th \ls\ml mlc est. A reporter visited the sceno of the wreck yesterday and found matters in respect to the enlisted men in a deplorable condition, while some of the oficers are in asorry plight, owing to the loss of their household effects. Lieutenant-Colonel Corcoran sat on the upper deck enjoying a 50-cent Havana, while under the command of a dozen cap- tains and licutenants, & squad of soldiers was busily engaged in wading around res- ouing what property they could. Yesterday morning's Bee apppaoximte the loss at $25,000, which in the opinion of a young lieutenant, is 875,000 short. The water as it filled the hold and swept the lower deck, sent bales, bo trunks and other puckages atloat which so filled the river with articles of value which were completely at the mercy of the current. The situation was quickly taken hold of by many of the rougher element who were able to pick up small boats In the vicinity and with these they alled a number of the floating bundles, rowed them to the and bank where they were quickly spirited away. Gilbert, a youth of nineteen or twenty, cmployed as a subordinate clerk in one of the departments of the United Stat National bank, has suddenly left the cit and his widowed mother is greatly concerned about his disappearance. He was dotained at the bank late Friday evening assisting tho “out of town collecting elork” and after loaving that building he has not been seen by any friend or acquaintance this side of the vi There being an intimation of his having probably gotten hold of some of the funds of the bank and skipped, a roporter of Tiri: Bek called at thatsinstitution yesterday and inter- viewed Mr. Hamilton, the president, and Mr. Barlow, the cashier. Mr. Hamilton said Gilbert had been in their employ nearly two years, but of late his services have not been satisfactory on account of ill-hcalth. He never had any chance to handle any of the funds, as his po- sition was merely that of a subordinate, and the bank was in no way al Mr. Barlow ridiculed the importance attactied by reports to Gilbert’s position. He said that his posi- tion was merely a grade higher than that of messenger boy and at any time he could find a youth to fill Gilbert's positiom at from §37 to $40a month. Only last week he was threatened with a discharge for incompe- tency. The oon only person young Gilbert is Stubbs, formerly Miss Mattie Kirscht, the bandsome daughter of L. Kfrscht, a liquor dealer doing business on south Tenth strect, in this city, and a res- ident of Council Bluffs. Dame rumor h; that young Gilbert caused a separation be- tween Mr. and Mrs. Stubbs last winter when they were residing in this city. Two young girls, who are inclined to bo somewhat wild, took a drive out to the fort with the expectation of painting the garri- son. After stopping at one of the saloons and imbibing port wine, they started out of the gate. After driving some distance Mollie wished to return to the saloon, but Boertha would not have it that way. While struggling for the lines they paid no attention to the horse, which was drifting, and finally the buggy was dumped into a ditch, leaving the girls in a very sad plight. A Mr. Rider. who happened to bo near, picked up the girls and carriod them to a house near by. Tho thirsty Mollio was unconscicus for nearly two hours, her face and head being badly battered up. received a sprained arm, a black eye and other slight injuries. Mr. Louis Purtell, proprietor of the Fort Omaha park, kindly received the girls and will take care of them unsil they have suffi- ciently recovered to return home. The girls claim to bo sisters, and Mollie, the eldest, says it was all her fault, but she would not care had she not lost her pretty ring. Some time ago Chairman Balcombe of the board of public works, said that if the pave- ments on many of the streets in the city could be removed they would be found to be under- laid with fissures which would mark the settling of every sewer and water trench under them. Such being the caso, it was only a question of time when the pavements, de- prived of their supmrh would fall in sections into the trenches beneath. Mr. Balcombe's prophecy has been fulfilled in several in- stances since, and one of the mast dangerous is the hole in the asphaltum on Dodge street, between Thirteenth and Fourteenth. The concrete has fallen down and traftic over the spot has crushed in the asphaltum, and be- fore long the hole will be much larger. This is not a pleasant prospect when so much has been expended to secure good thoroughfares. Drink Malto. The North and the South.
