JUNE 4, 1888 SUNDAY 1N COUNCIL BLUFFS, Father Adolph Wesseling Discourses Upon an Interesting Subject. SUNDAY BASE BALL QUESTION. Hot Pitching of Rev. Mr. Rees—The White Hats Start For St Louis- One Horse on Brown. The Mysteries of Christianity. The Rev. Father Adolph W cescllinge- livered a very able address yesterday morn ingat St. Peter's church. His text was Romans xi, 88 and 3. Stating his subject, The Mysteries of Christianity,” he said: The eagles are said to carry their young on high to test their eyes in the brightuess of the sun and those not blinded by his light are adopted and provided for, while the rest are hurled against the rocks beneath. In a simi- Jar way the church_acts in reference to the of faith. The high mystery of the Trinity, & mystery which, by the fulness of its light, dazzles the learned and the unlearned alike, is placed among the firstlessons before s of her beginners to test their soul's nobility and capacity for so sublime a mys- in this, the church inverts the order of things. In studying the arts and nces we ascend from the rudiments to higher attainments, whilst she puts at once the noblest truths upon the portals of her en. trance and closes them to all who have not the will and courage to confess the triune Giod. She does not deem them worthy of any further training and attention. Thedoctrine of tne Trinity is the test of true faith and christian sentiment. The church, taught by CGioq, is_certainly right in acting thus, be- cause christianity is a doctrine of mysteries. Like a holy and mysterious temple of the lord of hosts, stands christianity in the world. Mysteries are its foundations, mysteri component parts, mysteries the things done in it and the service held in it. Like a mi- raculous tree planted from foreign climes on our shores stands our holy faith before us. Mysterious is the sap which thrives in it and wondrous the blossoms which adorn it. For the fundamentol doctrine of the but almost, ¢ tenet of our Tuith, flowing from the holy source, L nd forces us to exclum with St. Paul: “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and of the knowledge of God! How incomprehensible are His judgmentsand how unsearchavle His w This is the first o rinity Sunday, and honor of this mys: in the Triune God What is el religion ! 1t is the revel vhich we hold to be the revelation of tion of the Fath- s love, who, from all eternity, begot the Word and sent it to this world to enlighten y ma It is the revelation of the Son’s who came on earth to recall by word, mple and the faith he planted, man from wavs of errorand of sin and put him on the road of truth and sanctity. It is the revelation of the Holy Ghost, who with wings of grace moves over the word and _churen of Ciirist to protect and perpetuate them to the end of time. Christianity is then not the work of any human gen- jus, or the result of any human ingenuity, but is a divine communication, a grece and power from on high, If then christianity is the revelation of divine wis- dom must it not in proof of its origin contain s high and lofty as God hunself{ s mysterlous as the divine fountain from ) they emanate! Could God, the incomprehensible, reveal himself without revealing mysteriest 1f christianity embraced no other truths but what are within the grasp of reason, its birth and origin could not be of the triune God. A religion without mysteries is a clear production of some human craftiness, and on this account as small and narrow as the human_thought, as bitter and intollerant as the modern infidel, anarchist o1 communist, and as changeable and defective as the range of their mind, on and caprice, But in religion, which does not, nature, show the external g there ¢hould be no mysteries 1] sl ould_be clear to reason, In this field Ton nd Harry should be granted the pn\llc;.: in politics, todabble, to fight and examine according to his views, faulty and misguided as they may be, the eternal truths of God; retan and reject, as the moral standard of his fancy or his mental o ty may adyise. Is this nct degrading religion far below the sciences and the visible creation of God, in which only men of noble learning dare pronounce results? Is this not forcing human reason on the highest seat of the supernatural, before whose tribunal God himself should bow and yield! Is this mnot, too, the meanest climax of temerity, since it is presuming that in the science’ of sciences, in the school of God's theology, any man or woman may estublish and~ deny, when, truly here, the man of the profession, the learned and pious theologian bows in awe and revercnce and moves with caution and with fear, lest he, too, should with the unstable and unlearned, heedless of St. Peter's admonition, wrest the things of God to his own destruction, The mysteries of christianity have recalled son from her degradation, from its long ght of pagan ignorance and abomination They have removed the blinding banda from the cyes of our mistaken pagan fo fath, They have restored to human r son its true wortn and destiny. And as long as human reason sceks honestly for truth, so long will these mysteries be the guiding stars, the beacon lights of our holy faith, not- withstanding the senseless sneers of thé un- beliey For Lots near the bridge to parties who will bvild at once. Ad- dress or call on J. R. Ri No. 100 Main street, l'unmil Bluffs, op at the Bechtelo. el Sunday Basc Ball, Last evening the Rev. W. H. W. Rees gave this subject @ most thorough and compre- hensive review. At the outset he stated when s the position of the christian church upon the subject of Sunday amusements, In approaching the review of the discourse of the Rev. T. J. Mackey, upon the same sub- ject, Mr. Rees said that he did not wish to criticise the position held by any one upon this subject. It is the right of any person to think as he pleases, but when these opinions are given public prominence they demand public attention, He then stated the points made by the Rev. Mr. Mackey, and in reply maae, among others, the following pomnts: “Is the world to dictate what kind of a Sab- bath we are to havel [f so, we will have Sunday base ball, open beer gardens, saloons, etc, What do the laboring classes demand Not art gallerics, librarics, bathing, ete. They are demanding more money for their worl ; shorter hours in a day's service. Some are demanding tho open beer garden, but there is & large cluss of laboring men which demands a christan Sabbath.” He asked the questions: **What churches are the most prosperous! Those that are not rigid in their demands for Sabbath observance, or those who demand of the church a Sabbath of rest and worship! - Out of what kind of material are we goiug to build up this republici Which i$ 10 be more respected : the christian cons- cience or the Christless conscience!” The questions thus asked were fully discussed and logical conclusions drawn. The address was very able and was listened to by & very large audience. 0, H, McDANELD & ©0,, Hides. Tallow, Pelts, Wool and Furs. Highest Market Prices.
