Francis plead guilty to the charge, but said he was prompted to do it because O'Connor had circulated reports damaging to the repu- tation of his sister. His honor said that while personally he might admire a man who defended the honor of his sister, still there was nothing In the statute that would allow him a8 a judge to J such an action by acauittal. Jensen, the grading contractor, whose office is at the corner of Farnam and Dexter streets, em- ployed one J. G. Wilson to work for him. Wilson was an entire stranger to Jensen, but so faithfully did he discharge his duties, and so generally useful did he make himself to the contractor, that it was but a few months before he was appointed foreman. And then in addition to the duties of this po- sition he acted as Jensen's busi- ness adviser, kept his books, and attended to his bank account, depositing and drawing money whenever such services were required. Saturday nights he was given the pay roll and Jensen signing his name to a check permitted Wilson to fill in the required amount and pay off the hands. Last Saturday evening he was given this check for the purpose indicated and Wilson left the office ostensibly to draw the money and pay off the hands. However, that was the last seen of him, and on going to the United States na- tional bank, where he had his ac- count Mr. Jensen learned to his astonish- ment and alarm that Wilson had drawn every cent there was to his_credit, being ex- actly §1,234. He lost no time in notifyini the police, but all to no avail, the rascal ha made good his escape, covering up his tracks well behind him. Mr, Jensen got the check at the bank, and identified both his own sig- nature and Wilson’s writing, for the latter, as had been his custom, filled in the amount. Diligent scarch has failed to develope any clue to the thief’s whereabouts, and it is doubtful whether he will ever be apprebended, as he is ashrewd sud intelligent fellow and has in all likelihood put a long stretch of country between himself and Mr. Jensen. He had told Jensen some time this spring that he was u widower and had two children and that they were living on a small farm he owned in the vicinity of Cedar Bluffs, this state. A telegram for, warded to this point Tuesday night, howevur has failed up to this time to elicit a response, and the only thing that has been discovered in anywise connected with the man is a valise and a bundle of clothes which he left ot a boarding-house on South Thirteenth street, and which, he said, a man by the name of Smith would call for. This may possibly lead to the detection and arrest of the absconder, but the police have little hopes of being able to lay hands upon him. e TO SALT LAKE AND RETU The Union Pacific. “THE OVERLAND ROUTE,” 11 tickets from all Kansas and pofnts for the special ex- cursion to Salt Lake City and return, June 6th, at one fare for the round trip. Mr.Shandy demanded to know the name of the party who preferred the charge against him,but was told by Judge Berka that he (the znr‘fifl) had neglected to bring the keys of drawer in which his papers were kept, and consequently his desire could not be gratified. Shandy then relates that he met Captaim Green upon the street and propounded 4 like question to him and the only satisfaction received was the assurance that it was an unfortunate cir- ance and that he was sorry it had hap- As Mrs. Shandy was ill at_the time the arrest was made, and in view of the fact that the arrest was made on very flimsy grounds, Shandy is of the opinion that he has very #ood grounds for a damage suit, On the day the assault was committed Shandy was at work switching cars at Howell's lumber yard and the least inquiry on the part of the party making the complaint would have devcloped this fact. Barrett was not consnlted as to whether he could or could not identify him, but the warrant was sworn out and the man arrested without further ceremony. Barrett was scen yester- day morning at the hospital, is in & much im- proved condition and will doubtloss recover, He positively asserts that Shandy is not the man who committed the act and declares that he can identify his assailant when captured.
