Herman Kountze Puats a Million Dol- lars Against the New Soap Works, Tik Ber some days ago published an an- nouncement that the W. A, Page Soap com- pany, an Towa institution, had purchased from 7. D, Tler a part of the old Boyd pack- ing house in which they intended us soon as possible to begin the manufacture of soap and thus give employment to a number of men, Yesterday it was ascertamned that Herman Kountze was opposed to the estab- lishing of a soap factory at the place indi- cated and was _immediately called upon by Tur; Bk man to ascertain the truth of the rumor, Mr. Kountze said that he was opposed to the obening of a soap factory at the place indicated. It was but half a dozen blocks below his place, and such n actory could not be otherwise thun injurious to the neighbor- hood. Tt would give out offensive odors, and make it unpleasant for the people who had settled there and invested large sums of money in permanent and beautiful homes and edifices. Such had been the history of soap factories wherever they had been erected, and Mr. Kountze instanced a case in St. Louis, where a soap factory on Loc strect had long been a source of annoyance 10 the neighbors, and a means of depreciating the surrounding’ property. That gentlcman also stated that he did not know in what way the opposition to the enterprise would be brought to bear upon it, because the thought of those opposed had not yet crystalized to that extent. Mr. Kountze said that he was not alone in opposing the factory, A number of other people had signed the remonstrance which, it is thought, will be soon brought before the counc ““How much property, real and personal, is interested in the opposition :* asked ‘I'ng BEg man, “One million dollars, at least,” said Mr. Kounlze.
