The telephona business here has increased greavly, and much of this is due to the promptness and acouracy of the service. For a fow days past a record has been kept of the number of calls made. The check was kept only for cight hours each day, from 8 o'clock a. m. to 12 o'clock, and from 1:50 p. m. to 6 o'clock. During these hours the first day there were 1,350 calls, those only being ‘counted where connections were made, The second the number was 1,400 and the third day 1§ On this day one scction of operators, having 100 telepones to look after, made 787 connections, or an_average of ninety an hour, As these calls did not come in regularly, there being perhaps five minutes at a tinie when there was no call, an_idea may be gained of the rapidity required during the actual time that calls were coming in, they forming a rush often. One telephone had during the day fifty-six calls, and another forty-nine. Othors made a less number of course, Another feature of the office which is now proving quite satisfactory is a systom of checking by which all subscribors who do not make a call before noon are called up by the central office simply to learn if the in- struments are in order. ~The number of tele- phones in usc has increased greatly during the past two years, and the service has proved 8o satisfactory that the local man ager, Vance Lane, may well be complimented. His ‘endeavors to have the service nll that it should be have proved successful, flabbib-ie Family Peace Restored. Quite a sensation was recently caused by the arrest of William J. Clark, a merchant on upper Broadway, charged with bigamy. 1t was claimed that he had a wife living east and that the discovery of this fact had led his present wifo to become insane. A sepa- ratio®and s arrest followed, Clark has been out on bail, and it appears that he has been jstraightening up s family matters. Yesterday an afidavit was filed by Mrs. Lucy I. Clark, in which she states that she is the wife of William J. Clark, and that their relations are perfectly satisfactory, the only thing now worrying them being tho criminal case brought against him, which she as well as he desires dismissed. She states that she never started this prosecution, but ihat friends rolying on statements made by her during her delirium, had her- husband arrested. Everything had been arranged sat- isfactorily to herself, and she had been mar- ried to him a second time at Cedar Rapids, on the 15th of April. She now wanted the case dismissed. Lot s Borrowed the Wrong Name. Two young fellows who were having a scuflle in Bayliss park were rather summa- rily arrested by the park policeman and charged with malicious mischief, they having in the scramble overturned one of the benehes, The affair was not very serious and Judge Aylesworth found no occasion to impose a fine, but allowed the young men to o free on payment of costs. One of the paif on being arrested sought to disguise his iden- tity by assuming an alias, ana he hit upon thé name of John Mulqueen, one of the steadiest- gaited and most worthy young men in the city. Mr. Mulqueen’'s surprise was rather great when lhe picked up the morn- ing papers and found his name thus coupled with offenders. He pros ceeded to investigate, and found that the young man who thus used his name in vain wwas John Finn and should have been so re- corded, As Finun was a stranger it is sup- posed it was a mere accident that he thus borrowed the name, and that he had no in- tention of causing annoyance to any innocent person. —— Picked Up By the Police, Judge Aylesworth assessed three booze fines yesterday morning: Humphrey Cavin, $7.00 rt, 60; Charles Phil- lips, $5.10. Henry Mooner was muleted to the tune of $10.10 for disturbing the peace. Willie Grayson, of Missouri Valley, was charged with vagrancy, but promiscd to goto Omaha and was released. Casper Beam and Kitty Kisk, alias Jack- son, alins Webber, were concerned in a little domestic dificulty and _Kitty was the loser. She suid that sho made a’ friendly call on Casper, although a total stranger, and he was 80 ungrateful as to steal her watch, The de- fendant ut first denied it, but finally told the volice where the ticker could be found, and it was restored to its owner. As the pllfering Casper was not ready for trial, his case was continued, and the festive Kitty, who, by the way, is a rather aged feline, was sent up for thirty days, e A Case of Bulldogging. Judge Loofbourow presided in the district court yesterd The jury in the case of ray vs Flickinger, which was out all night, returned their verdict during the forenoon, it heing in favor of Bray for $200. This swit arose over a stock of boots and shoes, in a store on Main strect, which a man named Stiles was ostensibly running, but which Bray claimed to bo really his, Skiles being an employe simply. The case was tried once before, and won' by Flickinger. On being taken to the supreme court it was reverse and this second trial is a complete changd about. It will probably go to the supremd court again, The rest of yesterday was taken up with trial_of {he case of Witts vs Bowen. v are Neola parties, The plaintiff claims that while driving past Bowen’s place a bull- dog belonging to the latier rushed out at his horse, frightening the animal, and causing an accident by which the plaintiff was thrown against a barbed wire fence, causing injuries to Lis log, for which he demunds dumages, AR The Salvation Army. ie Council 13lufls local corps is expecting to have a big time to-day. Herman became in- volved in a family row at his home in Wash- ington township, and when a neighbor's wife interfered, he resented tho intrusion and thumped lier considorably. He was arrosted for assault with intent to do great bodily injury, and bound over to the grand jury in the sum first named, He was unuble to furnish such an exorbitant sum and Was lodged in the county jail last Friday. ‘T'he court deemed the bond exceasive for the charge on wiiich he was held, and re- od it 0 that the defondant will not be prived of his liberty for nearly three mouthd awulting the action of the grand jury. e Not a Binding Partnership.
