The postponed game between the home club and the C. E. Maynes was played at the driving park yosterday afternoon in the press ence of about 500 spectators. There was much uncertainty expressed as to tho resulf of the gamo, as the visiting club 18 rogards a8 one of the strongest in the twin cities’ league, but the Bluffs boys lifted thelr scalps very casily, and won the game hands down, by a score of 8to 8. A heavy wind blowing from the northwest rendered the amphitheas ter decidedly uncomfortable, and the major- ity of the spectators sought ' places of obser- vation whore they could get the bencfitof the sun, The game began at ten minutes four, with the home club ot the bat. | Hety fouled out, Strock was eaptured while steals ing second, and Brown pounded viciously af t}:r ‘lmll, but without effect, leaving Kly af third. Adams led off for the visitors, bup was unable to find the ball Withnell lifted a high fly, which Ely muffed, stole second, reached third on a wild throw to Beth to hoad him off, but was thrown out at the plate, Betti to Strock, and Anderson wound up the inning sawiug the air. Bierwein was the next ash-wiclder for the homo toam, but his efforts were unavailing, Hemick tnpsm«l the sphere for one bag, caps tured second and third by grand larceny, but was nabbed off his base after Saddler had struck out, and the score was still blank, Crader was given a base on balls, and the Nebraska contingent cheered feebly, Care roll got in a hard drive to center, advancing Crader to second, but the latter's logs wero 100 short to reach third and he died in tha attempt. Carroll reached second on Brown's mufl, third on a passed ball and scored on Farrish's slow hit to short. Farrish stole second, but was captured by a double play when MeBride flow out to Oliver. The home team then started in to make @& run and they succeeded. Oliver fanned ~ out, ° but Benn was struck by a pitched ball, and got first, stole second and third and scored on a passed ball. Strock got safely around to third, but was thrown out at the plate after Betti's feoble attempt to reach first. Salisbury was the only Omahog who got & base in that inning, and his breath failed just before reaching the home plate. Both clubs played ball during the next two innings, and neither score grew any larger. In the sixth Strock spied a little hole be- tween short and third, and banged the leathor down there, reaching first. He reached third by felony, and scored on a passed ball, but that was the only one for that inning. The visitors then came in for a short rest, but were retired in one, two, threo order, and again took the field to do the hardest day's work of the year, for the homo players slugged the ball until the Nebraskans got weary chasing it, and Salisbury was ready to faint. The Blufiites followed each other around the buses until they were tired, adde ing five runs to their score. The visitors failed to reach first. In the cighth, Saddler added another tally with th aid of a wild throw and two passed balls, and the visitors captured two tallies also; This made three rolied in by the Maynes and the seore was unchanged at the end of the game. There was an unusually large audience at the Congregational church yesterday morn- ing, despite the threatening skies and chilly air, making the home firesides peculiarly ate tractive. The music, as usual., was & spec- ially pleasing feature of the services, The quartette gave several selections, which were so rendered as to amply repay those who had hesitated whether to stay at home or go to church. The sermon by the pastor, Rev. G. W. Crofts, was on the familiar text, “Behold how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.” He deseribed unity as not necessarily unie formity of opinion. Men's heads might differ and yet their hearts beat in oloses$ mpathy. There could be a unity of hop d purposes, of sympathies and affectiod, together with wide differences on matters non-essential. Christian unity was good because it tended to the glorifying God, which was the tru aim of life. In times pastsome of the mos| cruel wars and bitter - persecutions had beey carried on in the name of christignity, The! wore not inspired by Chirist or His teachings, but were caused by the wenkness and basqh ness of men who thought or claimed thal they w friends of Christ. The enemies of christiunity had used this as agaiust the ch Such wars aud persecutions did nbt glorify God. Unity, based on love, was the true glorification, 'Unity was good becaiise it gave power to christianity, The grams of powder, the drops of water, tho flakes of snow, when single and scparate, would no) harm a child, but together they carried deat! and destruction, they swept away cities an overturned mountains, There was strengt in union, ’, Unity was good because it could only be gamed by mutual love. 1t was the love of the old “flag that caused the thousands of boys to rally to save the union, when mere laws or statute hooks could not have inspired to heroio action, Unity was pleass ant. Religion was most deli hl(& he! were crosses, but even in the aring of these there was oxceeding great joy, By striving to be charitable toward all men, by living helpful lives, by deeds of kindnoess and acts of love, life here was made to partake of that of heaven beyond, that rest from tur- moil and strife where all should dwell tof gether in unity, Personal Paragraphs, Miss Ida Wies has returned from a visit to Chicago. i J.
