Gex'l Tht. & Pass: Uil Wabager A A 7 Statement of My, Morand. Owmam, May 1.<To the Editor of the Bedy Upon my arrival at Montreal I found a copy of the Omaha Ber under date of April 21st, containing many things derogatory to my character both in social and business cireles, and having decided before leaving Omaha tos return to this city in the fall and make Omaha my home concluded to take tho first train back and rect the false report n & goneral way as rogards tho claim of Mr, Brookes, my father-in-law. The fact that he was at one time associated with me in busi- ness in Newar! J., twenty years ago, and that the same was not a financial success, he losing his money and I my time. Mr, Brookes has known my whereabouts all these years and has nover prosonted & _clajm tome. As regards the doath of my wife, she died from what is knows as Bright's diseaso, as did her brother from the same causo two years previous, the same being horeditary on the mother's side. Twelve years aga I came to Chicago to look up a location in _the west whilo there called on Professor Martine a8 one teachor would upon another, and he kindly told me while in Chicago to make his home mine. While there I taught him, as well as his children’s class, many fancy dances for his May party—said dances to be also used for the Butterfly ball, to be given for the benefit of the Hahnaman hospital. I never consid ered myself an assistant, nor was I in desti- tute circumstances, as I had at the time on deposit at the Fidelity bank of Chicago about 500, and was never a broken-down lumber merchant. For my instructions both to Mar- tine and his classes, 1 was to bo paid gener- ously, and after four months’ services he gave me £35; his excuse for not paying me more was that having lost so M\l:{ money that season, he was unable to do better at that time. Mr. Martine never gave me mone; to go to Superior, or anywhere else, and will be charitable enough to believe that he has forgotten the circumstances—his dates are 8o inaccurate. I fully believe that if I could find him in Omabha I could have refreshed his memory, but instead, learn he has gone to Denver. My business is of such a nature that I cannot wait until his return. 1 would state that for the past twelve years T have been lcoated in the following cities, having classes there at different times: Quiney, 111.; Hannibal, Mo, ; Keokuk, Ottumwa, - Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Towa City and Omaha, 1 ang fnters ested person will take the trouble to inquire if my conduct in all those years has not n above reproach, and my government of classes m dancing in those citics has not been in the main for the advancement of the art instead of its debasement. Let them ask the numer- ous patrons who have visited my classes, and those who took part in the lessons if thy classes were not properly conducted; ame also, ascertain if at the close of any season there were any unpaid bills or indcbted of any kind against me. T came to Omaha to attend to my own business at the request of old patrons of mine who have known me many years in the above named cities. 1 was mu pleased with my suc- cess, which being beyond my expectations, may have occasioned jealousy in other quar- ters. I shall return to Omaha this fall, make it my home, attend strictly to business, pay all bills promptly, study and strive to please my patrons and excel in my profes- sion, hoping to gain and retain the good will of those who have supported me 80 gener- ously all these long years, and my new pae trons in Omaha this and last scason. Secretary Nattinger, of the board of trade, has reccived the following lotter in re- ference to the building of & pontoon bridge at this point: Prarrsmoutn, Neb., April;28.—As pont acon bridge starts from the water's edge it is far more convenicnt to people living near the shore than is a high bridge. If you will get a charter from cougress we will put ina bridge at your place this spring or summer, though it may be too late, if you begin now you will get it quicker at the next session of ngress if not now. It only req@ires five signers and $150 to incorporate. I'll send You a copy if you wish. With a pontoon bridge at your place peo- ple could drive over with pleasure, safety and speed uninterrupted by locomotives, Remember a pontoon bridge is not half as long as a high bridge and borses with light veh 1 trot over it. There is an improvement of much more importance than is apparent to first thought, and all of its advantages may be gathered by you without any delay. * * * Respect Tully yours, S. N. STEWART.
