The price at which the paving of Broad- way was contracted is causing no little com- ment among the taxpayers of the city, and in some quarters the action of the city council 1s flc\'un-ly ised. The contract price is 5 per yard. The matter has been taken up by certain parties who have secured a list of the prices paid by other citi uf Towa and Nebraska for the same kind of paving—cedar block on plank and sand foundation. Sioux City paid §1.47, Des Moincs $1.42, and Lin- coln, Neb, £1.57. None of these cities are moro favorubly located for getting material, labor, ete., the bonds of the city find ready sale, and whv there should be this difference in price does not, as yet, appear clear to any one. The claim that'it is better to keep the money at home by patronizing home coutrac- tors and home labor is a good point to make, but it lacks force from the fact that if a for- eign company can do reputable work ‘ut @ certain figure surcly any any other firm can do the same. ol The Body of a Missing Man. About two months ago the city papers chronicled the mysterious disappearance of Andrew Cassidy from the homo of his brother in Garner townsh Yesterday his body was found in a cetlar about four miles from his f¢ r residence, and the coroner was summoned to hold an inquest. The de- ceased left home in his shirt sleeves and it is thought he froze to death, e had been suf- fering from mental aberration for some time and it is supposed that he was under one of these attacks when he wandered away. ——— J. O Peter's Church—Andrew Cas- sidy's Body Found. Lower Ones Victimizer and Victim. Albert Canning, the young man who was a victim of Talbott's confidence game, is quite inaignant at the statements made by Talbott to the effect that it was a joint game to beat Canning's father out of money, and that it was to help the young man out that he, Tal bott, got into the scrape in regard to tho forged checks. Young Canning tells a very straightforward story in regard to his part of the affair. He says that he was induced by Talbott to go into the well drilling busi ness. Talbott scomed to be very well posted inthe business, of which Canning knew nothing at all. Talbott claimed that he could get a full set of tools, in Omaha, which, although second hand, were @as good as nmow, and that they could be had for $300. They vost about §1,200 when new. hey went to look at the tools, and_Talbott explained the var ious uses of the implements, seeming to un- derstand all about them. Talbott claimed also that he could get some profitable con- racts, and when the whole scheme was laid before Mr, Canning sr., the latter advised securing some of these contracts befor - ing the tools. Talbott named Paxton & lagher as one of the parties who would 1 some work done, and he drew up a_cont for them to sign. Talbott and yo 5 ning signed the contract, and then weut over to Omana to get this v firm to sign it. Canning says that ton & Gallagher's and Canning remained out- side. Talbott said that Mr, Paxton was not and he would have to sco him as he was the _one with whom the previous talk had been had. He would try and find him be he came across to the Bluffs, The two sep- arated, and Talbott met him at the depot, showed hun the contract with Paxton and Gallagher's nume signed_to it, and exp that he had met Mr. Paxton on th and had him step into a store near by to i the contract. Canningsays he supposed thut this was all straight, and did not mistrust but that the signature w bott and Canning went together to show the elder Mr. Cannig the contract, and then the $150 was handed over to help purchase the tools. T bott had 4 check for §150 which he claimed to have got from some Omaha man, and which he told young Canning he had cashed at one of the banks, and this was to pay his half of the 300 investment. Tal- bott claimed that he could probably get the tools a little cheaper by making the negotia- tion himself, and on their next trip to Omaha Tulbott wen' to the man who had the tools, and soon returned with a bill of sale of all the tools. They were preparig to go to work immediately, and engaged an express wagon to take away the tools the next d and hired two men'as helpers. Then they roturned to this side of the river. Talbott had got the $150, young Canning supposing he had paid it with his own 150 for the tools, but to his surprise Talbott was missing the next day. He then learned that he had been duped; that Talbott had pocketed the ; bill of salc was bogus: wd, and _that fud taken his wifo and child and ning had allowed Talbott to of salo and ulso the coutract. that Talbott, had destroyed the keep the 1o sup- umm- to I‘ wing put fin also, if he go there.
