When he did so, Mr. Griffiths would check the bank over to him and that would require several days. The money in the bank, which was now under ifith's seal, would be forwarded to Washington and the roceipt of the same ac- knowledged by the comptroller. It would bo possibly two weeks before the receiver Ivould advertise for proofs of deposits and then ninety days would clapse before the accounts would be paid. The action of Mr. Doty, a railroad contrac- tor at Creighton, at present engaged in con- structing the grade for the Fremont, Blk- horn & Missouri Valley railroad, came very near getting a well-known labor agent in trouble on Tuesday last. Doty had ordered twenty-five laborers which were to bo deliv- cred on Tuesday. The men were procared, and at 11 p. m. on that day, in company with the agent they started for their work. Upon arriving at the scene of action they were met by Doty who informed them that hie had ured all the 1 necessary and had telegraphed to that effeet. Explinations developed the fact that ||||' telegram was not sent until the men were ¢ there, whereupon tho la iy further conn with the matter and_left Doty to fight it out with the irate laborers who demanded work, a pass to Omaha or blood. Doty became somewhat alarmed and put up the necessary collateral for their board and lodging. The next morning they were offered work but refused to accept, and de- manded transportation to this city which they did not get, and then finding it” was a case of walk or work they determmed to lay for the employment agent. That gentleman conside: cretion the better part of valor rig, skipped across the country while Doty and the infuriated mob ar zuing the pass question. Notes of the Strike. to come toa close. “I don't want to hire ‘scabs’,” he said, “and it I go to work, which I expect to, T shall have no choice but to hire union men. The cost of buildings, at the in- creased wagcs, is not noticeable, there have been some hot-h sides. The bricklayers, the contractors have not exactly treated them right guess that's so, but then the affair can bo fixed up, and it ought to be and I think it wilt be, even if the bricklayers are concecded some of their points. THE RAILROADS, A Talk with Eli Perkins—His Opinion of One Young Man. For those who are seeking rest and quiet the general offices of the various lines in this city would have been a good plade to congregate, there being absolutely nothing of interest to be learned there. The only person who knew angthing on the subject of railroading was the celebrated Eli Perkins, who was discovered in room 93 at the Paxton, engaged in a fierce struggle with arefractorycollar button,to which he was striving to attach n strip of lmen commonly called a collar. The reporter’s timid knock was followed by “Come in" in very large capitals, Upon entering the room, Mr. Per- kins called *'time" (et the collar button fall for a moment and exclaime “Oh, yes, I know, you want to ask me where T have been, 'where 1 am going and when I am coming back. 1 have been west, am going to C hton in fifteen minutes and will return Sunday. I—" but at this point the scribe interrupted him by inquiring if he (Eli) had been interviewed by an employe of a certain job ofice in ‘this city on the subject ofithe strike on the #Q.” “Inter- viewed," exclaimed the great humorist and prevaricator, I should say I had; and do you know, I never until this morning had an idea that 1 knew so much about railroad mat- ters until a messenger boy brought me the paper mentioned this mornibg before 1 was up. Say,” he added confidentially, “‘do you know that the youth that came wup to my room last night, and then, after talking wit! me for an hour on Hill's chances for the dem- ocratic nomination, went off and perpetrated that article on me, has a wonderful imagina- tion? Wonderful, indeed, when I am non- committal on the subject of this strike and do not wish to talk about it!"” “Then the fireman in bed ‘heartsick’ at Hastings did not send for you" queried the reporter. “Send for me? Well nit, I haven't seen any firemen in bed ‘heartsick’ and what is more do not expect to, and the idea of being quoted as saying that every railroad in the, United States sympathizes with the C., B. & Q.," and here Eli’'s indignation got the botter of him and he returned to the struggle with the collar button. “Bless me" said he as ho kicked the handle off a water pitcher, “I don't know what the world is coming to; a man_cannot open his mouth but what some dapper little fhllow has to_misquoto. lim. Good day: T will see you Sunday morning.” and _snate ing a toothpick Eli made o rush for the ol vator. “You can say,” shouted he s the carriage descended, “'!ml Eli Perkins never goes baclk on the workingman engay struggle for right,” and with these words he was gone. Some men think that because they pay high prices for clothing, they get a better article than we gell for half the money. This 18 a mistake. To many customers who visit our store for the first time, it is a revelation that they can buy just as fine goods of us and just as well made as any custom tailor will turn out, and the fact that our prices are from 80 to 50 pe cent cheaper than other houses is also a revelation. The remarkable bargains we offer this geason have never been approached by any house. In spring suits we are opening every day new lots. All the latest styles are represented in our stock. The new Prince Albert guit in fine corkscrew and cassimere of different and beautiful shades and at prices almost one half what other establishments offer. The most astonishing value ever given in a spring suit is offered this week is our new $7 cheviot sack suit. This is made of a splendid all wool cheviot, an elegant color, lined with fine serge, gcod trimmings and well made. N%w, any house will show a seven dollar suit, but we positively assert that no one will show anything to compare with the quality we offer in this suit for less than $12, and we ask but $7 for it. Our Spring Overcoats are on the wane; of ‘the finest grades are but a few have marked them down to «left, and we ose them out. Of our $6 overcoats we still have a fair assort ment. This is the biggest thing ever shown in the way of an overcoat and everybody who has bought one acknowledges that it is as good a garment as is shown anywhere for $12. In our hat department we offer this week 25 dozen fine light colored derbys, satin lined silk band and binding, goat sweat leather at $1. If you are asked $2 or §2.50 for the same hat you would not hesitate to pay it. One Price Only. No Deviation. Mebraska Clothing Gompany Corner 14th and Douglas Streets.
