PUT HIM T0 WIPING ENCINES. Bhameful Treatmentof a Farmer By the Burlington People. A VALUABLE LESSON FOR SCABS. Culpable Delay of the State Pritter in Public Grant County Organized ~Lincoln Brevitics. Issuing Documents — LINCOLY RUREAT.] Mr. W. Reynolds, living near Abbott on the linc of the B. & M at the Bex of- fice and related his experience as an r frrow THe nER gin: with the Burlington road. Mr. Reynolds states that early in March he 8 at the sta. tion at Abbott and he remarked to the agent that he n engineer. The d him the condition of the strike and thut a perma nent place could be given him running an en gine, and to corroborate his statement held converse with Lincoln over the wires, A fow days thercafter Mr. Reynolds ved a dispateh from the master mechanic at this “Can use you this showing place, J. C. Salisbury, saying if you come at once.” Upon Reynolds sold his team and stock and pre pared to rencw his life as an engincer, bring ing his boy to Lincoin with bim. Arriving here he states that the masier mechanic told him that they were short of engines but that he would put him to work as a mechanic. From that time on until he quit he was em ployed about the round house, and, as he says, promised daily to be given ne and set to work. This was along in March and a few days ago he began to think that he was not being used as agreement and fnvestigating ho found he was down as a wiper. He finally demandea that he be set to work reed or that they pay him off and in a day or two he got his time check that showed hoe was entitled to §1.25 a day, his check for the time he worked in Avril, netting him $9.12. To say that he Was indignant at the way ho had been used is ex- pressiug his feelings in a mild manner. He had sold his stock, his team and his grain_to become a patriot for the Burlington. He had been to the expense of board for himself and boy and had drawn in_exchange §1.25 o day, and after thirty days was turned loose 10 gev home as best he could. Mr.Reynolds in reluting his experience said that he conld not understand why he had been 8o treated; he said that he stated when they employed him that he had been an engincer on the Illinois Central road cighteen years ago running out of Carbondale, 1l This he says he can oy y time, and he was promised on these credentials a permanent position as an engineer. When he left the oftice he was fear- ful that the roud would not cash his cheek and let him have enough to gt homeon. His experience may be profitable to_some of the scabs who are now running on the road, and he wants the public to know how he was used. RAPID WORK, The public printing of the state, as it has been conducted the past two years, 18 as poor public service as could be possibly devised by any state in the ls The sec v of state is just at the present tine - engaged in sending forth the house journals of the last session of the legisiature that closed its work one year ago. Three montns' time was ample and as long as other states require to get the legislutive record before the public, but in Nebraska the people have had to wait B twelvemonth for something that should have been before them nine months ago. This is a record of delay wretched _enough, but at the same time that they are distribut- ing the now ancient house journals, they are sending forth the procecdings of the braska state horticultural society for 1585-6, which have but recently been received from the printer, In this instance the publication is two years old before it mects the public gaze. 'The records of the state board of agri culture were almost as ancient before they were given out by the slow-moving public printer and it is very evident that if the money spent by the state for these publica- tions is to bring any practical good to the peo- ple, reform is necessary. Feople do not care to read ancient literature and there is no reason why the printers should not be made 1o do their duty in their work. ADDITIONS TO THE MILITIA The adjutant. ral has issued orders al- Jowing the organization of militia compaunics at Omaha and North Piatte. GEANT COUNT Governor Thayer yesterday issued the following _proclamation, organizing the county of Grant: Whereas, A large number of the citizens of the unorganized connty of Grant have united in a petition asking ‘that suid county be organized, and th nes Forbes, Thomas R. TY BRIERS Work has been commenced on the new Woods block on Eleventh street one of the most expensive erected this year. ‘The appropriation for the grounds of tho capitol building can soon be drawn upon and the work of improving them will be com: menced carly in the season. Pwo alarms of fire called out the fire de- pmrtment yesterday, one on H street and one at Ifth and The damage in both coses was light ‘T'he question of what material to use for paving in the new districts is now agitating the proporty owners who have to for it, and a number of meetings have been hel The Fifth district is the last to call 4 gather- ing for discussion The trains are running very smoothly on the Burlington. John Shaffer, the Kearney county mur- derer confined in the jail of this eounty, was taken to Minden yestorday for trial, Th is his second trial, and results from the re wversal of the former decision by the supreme court. The rate of one'and a third fare has been made by tho roads in the state to delegates to the different etate couventious. The hucksters of the road will pay the same fare a8 usual—that is they will ride free. Tho local officials of the B, & M. declare that they never had a better class of men than those pretending to handle engines who are now employed. The usual wreck in the yards here yesterday added emphasis 0 the assertion. It will be business blocks eee——— A Froe Family Fight. R W. Fraies is the name of & man who is the proprietor of 8 restaurant at Twenty- eighth and Farnam streets. His next door neighbors are named Finney, and between the head of the latter family @ cooluess has existed, which yesterday terminated in Fin ney coming into Frakes' place of business sud attempting to mop the floor with bim. He wet with very poor success and was be- ing done up in clegant style when Mrs. Fin mey dropped in, aud noticing that her liege 1ord was not coming to the front in good style, flew back home and resurrected the family hatchet, and returned just in time to hear Mr. Finney beg for mercy. She advised hitn to **hold hus grip,” and sailed in, aud in a very fow moments Mr. Frakes looked the worse for wear. His nasal organ was bro kou, his eyes blackenod aud his head bruised in nineteen places. Thursday afternoon at Fort Omaha an almost fatal aecident occurre Captain Keller, who commands pany G, was putting his company through the skirmish drill, and at the same time company F\ of which Private Hughes is a member, was marching in fours, The com- mand “Fire!” was given by Captain Keller, and the charge struck Hughes above the hip, turning him almost to a righ bout face, and proceeding on its_deadly errand, just grazed Private George Whistler, who was on the left of Hughes, raising a large blue lump on the left arm. com When Gearer saw Hughes fall he cried out, “Oh, my God!" and flung the musket from him. Both Gearer and Williams were ned to the guard house. As the matter ids, it 18 said the deplorable accident would not have happened had the officer n the command Ggi open “‘brecch locks.” as istconsistent with the regulations and m v ‘tactic On Sunday morning Private ( was placed on guard, and _was relieved Monday morn Having obtained a three days' pass he took a trip to Lincoln to_look after some property recently purchased by him, iort interim between his return out todrill, he had no During the from Lineoln and going occasion to use his gun. The accident occurred at 1:8) p. m Private Hughes sent the kindest of mes- sages to James Gearer, telling him not to feel badly about the shoot- ing, as ho well understood that Gearer was the last man in the world to be blamed for it. Gearor, in responding to the warm-hearted and thoughtful mes pressed his intense know if there w ything he vould do th would probabl nfort him; also exp ing a desiro to obtain the services of some of the eity doctors. The fight in the “Q" stock business at South Omaha continues and those who doubt the influence of shippers in injurmg the road’s business have only to look at the rec- ords of yesterday and the few d i to have their opinious shattered, Twenty cars of stock were yesterday ordered of the B. & M. agent at that point for a shipment of cattle to Chicago. 'riends of other roads who do not wish the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy any more luck than is absolutkly nec- essary got around tho shippers, 80 to speak, and in a very short space of time had con- vinced them that ihe latter road was not the one to earry the ck. Result, eighteen out of twen sent over the Chi- cago, Milwatkee & St. Paul, the “Q” holding the other two by a mere seratch. Mr. J. Hardin, general live stock agent of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, with head- quarters at Creston, la., was in the eity yes- terday, and in reply to u question as to what the road was doing in the livestock business, remarked, “We are losing all the money w8 made in the last five years.” If the old adage “straws show which way the wind blows,” holds good in all cases, it is plain to be seen that the Q" is enjoying quite a brecze about this time. HIT WITH A LANT A “scab” gained his first victory last night inone of the many fights which have oe- curred at the Tenth street crossing by hit- ting his opponent, an old_employe, head with a lantorn, making a very serious cut, which was dressed by Dr. Miiler. The victor fled from the ficld in good shape at the sight of remforcements for the wounded mau, TE IS NOT A MEMBER.
