The maximum curvature is 24 de« grees &nml is an angle of 24 degrees in overy 100 feot). Vhen the basin is reached (through which the road runs & mile) there are lighter grades and heavier curves, there being one 26-de- groo curve, making a total anglo of 97 dogrees. The grades of 211 feet are on the 24-degree curves, tho grades of 264 foot being on the tangonts. The road crossos and recresses the creck many times, roquiring numerous trestles an bridges. On one of these bridges thore is a curvature of 18 degrees on a fifty-foot span. At the high bridge, a fino piece of wowk, the track is seventy-five feot above the bed of the creck, and a quarter of & mile above it, at “Devil’s Gate,” a nar- row gorge m-(-ulvlm! wholly by the ereek tho road is cut through the rock and is only soven feot above the oreek. This gorge was a difficult passage, two bridges being required in a space of 150 foet. A queer-looking logomotive, & powerful machine that carries its water on its back, is kept on this road, mak=- ing daily trips. In the summer & pass- enger locomotive and train will run to Loma Prieta, and boyond that tho queer locomotive will run to the end of the road and bring down the timber to be cut at Lomo Prieta. So steep is the grado that very slow progress is made, and in coming down the brakes have to be set very hard. It is o charming ride from beginning to end. All the lumbet is out at Loma Prieta, where there is a little town and a big mill. The mill has a large circular saw, with an over- saw, and they cut boards six feet wide and have a capacity of 60,000 feet a day. kb, it An Honest Man Found. Jonesboro (Ga.) News. On last Mon- day a strauger stepped into J. Haned store and asked to be allowed to pay up his accounts. Mr. Hanes did not_know the man, but upon inguiry found that he was once a school boy here in Jones- boro, and claimed to have bought a suit of clothes from Mr. Hanes while but a boy, and for which he never paid. Mp. Hanes nad no account of the clothes; in fact, the debtor stated that the clothes had been bought twonty-eight years ago, and then it was remembered that the Dbooks in which the accounts had been kept had been burned by Sherman’s army during the war, But Mr. Hanes remembered the transaction, but told the gentleman thathe could not now accept payment; but the debtor was {)el‘sistent. said that he had come some ttle distance to pay thot debt with in- terest, and must ‘do so. Mrv. Hanes ugroe& to accept the priuncipal, which was paid, and to-day Uncle Josh is the proudest man you ever saw to know that there is a man in Georgia so honest asto insist upon paying a debt of so long standing as to be utterly worthless in the eyes of law THE RAILWAY TIME TABLES. Herald, and runuing up this creek seven miles to the base of the grim old Loma Prieta is a railroad built and owned by the Loma Prieta Lumber com~ pany. This wonderful little road, hid- den” away in the bowels of the moun- tains. and ecreeping up to the Aptos gulch, is, besides being tho prettiest bit of railroad scenery in California, the most remarkable feat of railroad en- gineering north of Peru, Pive miles of road ~was built four years ago. ‘The timber having been cut out within reach of the railvond, the company greatly de- sired to cxtend the road “two miles farther up 10 order to teach the mag- nificent basin of the Aptos, a wide flat opening in the heart of .the mountains li\h:d with some of the finest redwoed timber on the coast. But there ap- peared to be insuperable difficulties in the way. Engincers were sent thither to explore the route, and they reported it impracticable. The grades wore too sleep, the gorges W00 narrow, and ltart ‘The company at Ifi to Mr. McLead, who went and a over the ground. “Iean build it,” he said, “if you back me with money.” “You may have all the mouey gyou want,” was the reply. He went to work last June, and has t finished the road. It is a remarka~ le achievement, Day xpress. N glplnn-‘A- A & M. V. R.R.
