Louis Post-Dispatch: “One'of the greatest pests that the !\\chmml of the west have to éndure,” said Robert P, Dodd, a large shecp-owner of Hugu, Col., to a 'Post-Dispatchi -roporter, “‘arises from theé ravages of ‘wolves and coyotes. The: zm'¥n\ wolves ‘of the plains are partieuls) fi};nd ‘of mutton, and zre very dainvy' i m theirtastes when they have a chané@'to gratify them, If a wolf gets into a flotk when™ the "shep- herd is out of II%M he will kill at least o dozen sheep in hull ‘an hour, as he does not ‘)rnusnd to devour theni, but sucks the blood from thefr’ fl\rom and then turns to another, ** **Some four or five 'years ugo several lhee men, niysell aniong the namber, ght a dozen greyhounds, fitanding m |~un down these animals and vid the country of an imtolerable pest, Bat the experiment was by’ no mears & suoccesss, s, although tho greghounds éould ‘eas- ily run down the-eoyotes, when they came to close quaters the latter’ were far more than & mateh for: the dogs. Turning over on thebacks the; would snap to the vight amd left with- their uhm-u teeth, intMoting severe wounds, and by the timexhe horsemen earhe up the hounds: wove: badly, injured. In a short time thehounds could not be in- duced to go anywhere near the coyates, and we got' rid of the uscless an mals. We bad given up in despair any hope of ridding ourselyes of the peste, a8 poisoned meat had a more disas- trous effect upon our dogs than upon the wolves and coyotes, and by shooting we could not- dispatch any number worth counting, Butlast summer a Mr, Lane, of Cheyenne, recommended us to buy pack of Scotch deerhounds that had proved of great use on the Laramie plains. We bought a half a pack—six- teen dogs—and since then we have en- joyed some of the graudest sport I ever saw in wmy life, These animals nare shaped somewhat like a greyhound, but are heavier, but not quite so |'|l~\!l,, and are very flerce. They possessed ample spoed to run down a coyote, and when once they had overtaken one were sure to kill it. At first they did not escape without wounds, as the coy- otes, gonerally so cowardly, will, when cornered, fight most desperately, But it was beautiful to_wateh the way in which the dogs would deal with one When overtaken tho coyote would lig on his back, presenting a keen row of teeth for the‘inspection of the hounds. Instead of springing on him all at once the pack would wait until some old veteran, of which we had four, came to the front. This dog would stand over the coyote and make & movement as if to seize him by the throat, but would immediately deaw back his head. Snap would go ‘the sharp teeth, and before the coyote could again prepare himself the dog would have him by the throst and in a few seconds he would be theot- tled. During last July and August the dogs must have killed” upward of two hundrea, and the lossos among the sheep have almost entirely coased. “‘But when the hounds. got after an old gray wolf,” continued My, Dodd, “Sthere would be o hattle voyal, - The great gray. wolves are larger and far stronger than the hounds and fight, furi- ously. They do not lie down to recieve the attack, but turn on the hounds, and in a moment there is o writhiug, stru gling mass of yellow hair, in the centfer of which can be scen the l(||| . gray fur of the wolf. The fight cont nues from five to ten minutes and although the wolf always succumbs to numby there are usualiy three or four crippled dogs to bo taken cave of, and during the sume mer nine were kl”\‘(‘ outright,” \\'-mhy the 10th Cent ry. sor Loisette’s great discovery aining the memory, endorsed by hundreds of celebrated ‘men who have been his pupils.
