The San Pedro Ranch and Its Annex of 100,000 Acre St. Louis Globe-Democra About twenty-two miles from ‘Lombstone and about five miles from the American frontier, is the 8an Pedro ranch. It is the first habitation in Mexico as ap- proached by the Sonora valley route* Don Jose Marie Elias is the proprietor of the San Pedro ranch, which embraces about eighty thousand acres of well- watered, well-timbered land in Mexico, lying cheek by jowl with this country. Besides his 80,000 acres, Don Jose had supreme control and management of 100,000 acres belomging to two nieces, both pretty girls, one aged nineteen and the other thirteen. The San Pedro ranch~—named foe:the San Pedro river, on the banks of which it is lo- ‘cated—was a favorite - place of ve- sort for the fuvoredjyouth of Tombstone. Don Joso was a fine old-fashioned gen-. tleman—and prohnbl{ s yet—and was oxtremeli popular with the Tombstone bloods. He frequently visited Tombe stone and had the entree to the Tomb- stone club, and knew how to work the nunpumr people for pusses to the thea- ters, n Jose had plenty of mone; but he folt that it was an evideuce of distinction to enter n theater on a free pass, Once the writer procured Nim a }}m« on the railrood for Contention to ‘ucson and return, and when he re- turned he spent 8500 to celebrato the high honor that was conforred' on him. Don Jose was a high kicker, When a comic opera company. visited Tombstone and rendered **Pinafore" for the first time, the grand old hidalgo fell in love with all the chorus girls, After the performance as was the custom of the area and region, the bloods of the town took the trou, to su‘[’\ per at the Tombstone club, and Don Jose insisted upon hl\HAn all the members of the company to his ranch for u week’s repose, and when they de- clined because of positive arrange- ments of the manager, he got mad and left. Don Jose was & royal old charac- ter. He would rather suffer, from chronic impecuniosity and spend money like a prince, than be a bonanza prince, and spend money like a beggar, Tomb- stone was an anti-Mexican town, like most towns on our frontier, and. Don Jose was the only Mexican received as a peer in Tombstone society. It was jn 1880 that the writer of this concluded to spend his vatation in Mexico. Letters of introduction are at once a passpor. and a currency for Americans travelin in the sister republic. The writer left Tombstone well fortified with letters of introduction to Don Jose, who I had a previous acquaintance with, among others. When the writer reached tho San Pedro ranch, Don Jose received him like a prince. In fact, the old hidalgosurrendered his house to his visitor. He gave him the best room in the house, showed him the pantry, pointed out the different servants or peons and named their duties, and last, but not least, gave him a keyto the strong adobe building in which the momfi and wine wert stored. The visitor reached the San Pedro ranch on Sunday evening. Everything went lovely until about 6 o'clock. Then the noise of a carringo was heard approach= ing and Don Jose went to an unglazed but safely barred window to see who ap- roached. When he saw the new arrival is face twisted out of shape and he muttered ‘“‘caraja” botween his teeth, but went smilingly like a gracious host to receive the new guest. The new ar- rival was a Tombstone doctor named Bartlett. He greeted the Don cordiall but quickly took his departure to_t! o reception room and joined the ladies. The writer had a speaking acquaint= ance with Bartlett, but did not nwnber him among his frionds. After a while Bartlett came out in the yard, where Don Jose and his previous visitor were enjoying a smoke. It was ovident that the doctor’s arrival did not add to the peace and comfort of the Don. When the doctor joined thesmoking party the Don found an excuse to leave. Then the doctor spoke to the writer in this way: “I want you to helpme. I want to marry the Senorita Inez, but the old folks are opposed to tho match. What ought I do? You are Irish, I should judge by your name, and ought to bo experienced in matters of that kind.” Discussion of the case en- sued, and and all the particulars were brought out. It was learned that Inez, the oldest of the young ladies, was not only ready but willing to 5»001 issues wiL{. the doctor, and the doctor pro- fessed to be wildly anxious to make the Mexican girl his wife without further consideration. This was about all the writer wanted to know to become a par- tisan of the lovers. The doctor was driven to the San Pedro ranch bya liverymgn, who was also a justice of the peace. There was no license to marr, ne 3 A na_at the time. an. Arizonn was only five miles by & good country road from the San Pedro ranch. With conditions and circumstances well in mind, the recorder hereof said to the doctor: “Go and see the young lady get her to prepare. Sce your driver, who is a justice of the peace, nnd have him to fix ug) team quictly. ‘When the team s ready and darkness obscures the pro- ceedings, get the young lady to enter the coach and drive like — to Arizonn, where thu driver can tie the knotin a minute.” The doctor actually kissed his adviser and proclaimed him in ful- some phrases the author of his happi- ness. He interviewed the driver, ho, of course, was willing to assume character of ]ustme of the peace on l.he slightest provocation. The young lady was interviewed and she was willing. Darkness came, the team was fixed up and cvorvthhlg was ready. The young lady was a brick, and with her face en- veloped in a mantilla, left her home and entered the carriage without hesitating. Ali was ready, and the historian of the event has his ears mwdy to hear the noise of the dc;]mrt.l carriage. Don Jose and writer were * sipping mescal and swappin incidents of Tombstone life in the room assigned to the latter at:the time. The doctor entered with head downcast and cheeks laved with tears. He called the Don outand then unfolded a tale. The sncaking paregoric sharp told the old Don that he loved his niece and was anxious to marry her, and grieved at the opposition of the young lady’s guardian, He told how in his deep distress he appealed to the writer and the advice he received. To make along story short, he guve the whole suap away, and the old Don, furious, went to the carriage which stood on.the road, took hisniece out and escorted her to the house. Then he paid his respects to your humble servant. He upbraided him with abusing his hospitality, read the letters of introduction that \e sented, and wound up by uxduuu V‘I’n summarily from his premises. Fhore was no way out of it. The planner of the elopemeny had to go. He eéntered the carriage vacated by the lady and returned to Tombstone. The doctor had the gall to take a seat by his side. The writer held his peace without speaking until the sacred soil of the United States wa s reached, and then he relieved 'his pe nt-up feeling by kicking the doctor out of the carriage. following him out and trouncing him soundly on the land of the free. It turned out later that the doetor loved the lady’s 50,000 acres .of land better than he loved herself, and fearing that complications might ulw if he eloped with her, he wanted to curry favor with the uncle and guar- dian how sorely he was tempted how bravely he had resisted. Don Jose, who was a thoroughbred to the marrow, ever afterwards despised him, and the young lady was summarily cured of her affection for the Gringo and cut his ae- quaintance. It was a year before the writer could satisfactorily oxplain his connection with the affair to Don Jose, but at last an understanding ‘was reached and they parted as friends, The lady in the case is now the wife .of a prommont Californian and resides at Los Angeles, ' e — ?
