I K. Cole, ne'cor 13th aud Douisius DEATH OF A MISER. Ghastly Discovery Made in a Phila- delphia Attick. Philadelphia Dispateh to the Globe Democr When Sergeant Hoffnan broke down the bolted door opening into the attic on the rtourth floor of the house 1169 Ridge avenue, about 10 o'clock, he was met by a tragic sight. On the side of the room diagonally op- posite the door wus the dead body of old George Knorr leaning against 4 fiveles stove, one arm thrown around that pi of furniture and the other arm trailing on the floor, while the body was in a half-kneeling position. His habits have been those of a recluse, and the docu- mentary proofs found showing the large posessions that he owned, taken in conjunction with his habits, give evidence that he was also a mise For fourteen vears he lived alone in the room where his body was found this morning, and there he did his own cook- g and other work of batchelor house- kooping. For nearly three weeks ho had not been seen by his neighbors, and the decomposed appearance of the re- mains indica that he had been dead for probably that length of time. The fingers of Knorr’s right hand were fleshless, nothing but the blackened skin covering the bones. The face was sunken, h over two weeks’ growth of beard adding to its ghustliness, The oyes wore open and staring, and the sight was one well caleulated to send & shudder through those who so suddenly came upon the scene. There was Iittle doubt that the old man had come to his death through starvation ard cold, and there was ovidence of prolonged and exerucinting agony. Direetly back of the stove was the old man’s bed. Tne pillow used by him was along bar of iron, covered with an 1d coat. The covers were an old overcoat and an assortment of rags. Sergeant Hoffman made a thorough search of his room and found just 94 cents in money. The money, which consisted of three quarters, one dime, one 5 cent piece, one 2 cent picce and two pen- nies, was found in a cirele in the ‘hot- tom of an old bucket standing by the door. Around the wall was hung a col- lection of articles that have no place'in the chamber of a thoroughly sane man. There were old barrel hoops, odd piocds of iron, the soles of old shoes, pieces of rags and the like hanging on nails driven into the walls. n examination of the room was made and & bundle wrapped in an old handkerchief found. Q{'hcn opened two large gloss hottles, some old lead and eleven deeds for property in Ham- monton, Atlantic county, N. J., amount- ing to over 84,000 were found. The old man would never speak to any one and has not been scen (lnr as long as three months at a time. Ho was constantly muttering to himself ahout some money coming to him from friends in Ireland. Ho never left the house without cavry- ing his bundle of deeds with him, and would colleet all the old pieces of shoe leather he could find. He cooked his foot in an old cast-away pse-plate over a wood five, propping up the skylight to let out the smoke. On the wall to the left of the door were the decayed bodies of nine bats taked up by their wings, and the skeletons of several more hang- g by a single hone. The supposition is that he died about New Year's day, as he had & habit of moaning, which could be distinetly heard on the next floor, and it has not been heard since that time. — - | The worst feature about catarrh is it dangerous tendency to consumption, Hood’s Sarsaparilla cures catarrh by purifying the blood sty It has been decided recently by the court of common pleas of Berk county, Pennsylvania, that it is o violation. of the law to charge an admission fee to camp meetings on Sunday. The case was that of the commonwealth of Penn- sylvania vs Weidner, on_the complaint of A. Fernley, and the law under which the decision was made is an act of April 22, 17M, ———— e , Mrs. Simon Towle, of Hollis, Me., n young and apparently robust woman, died suddenly and remarkably the other day. Up to a few hours before her death she was in apparently perfect health; then a birthmark on the side of her nose became painful; then she began to bleed at the nose; and the bleeding continued 1n spite of all attempts to ston it, until she died. i A, Leland hotel, Chicago. —~— The largest savings bank in the world is the Glasgow Savings bank.
