PLAYING OFF WHITE, Still Regarded as a Crime in the South —Curious Reading. A Carrollton (Ga.) Special to the At- {anta Constitution says: Carroliton had quite a sensation thisafternoon. About 8 p. m, two strong looking wagons drove on to the public square, and stopped in front of the Commercial hotel. The, were double seated vehicles, oxcept that where the rear seat should be was o large square box with sides and ends sloping outwards, somothing like a mill hopper. In each vehicle was seated n man driving. Both got outat the hotel, had thewr baggage semt in and their teams carried to the livery stable. Both men were young fellows, o rather dark complectioned. It was soon learned that their business was that of ‘“‘feather renovator.” They proposed to take an old feather bed and in a &hort time mak it s good as new. Soon aftor thoi arrival tho dark man entered a barbor shop and scoured first-class shave. As he emerged some one noticed that he was rather 1o dark for a white man, The suspicion circulated rapidly, and finally he was asked the question as to his race. He appeared excited, but sceing the deter- mined faces about him humbly acknow edged that he was a negro. Mr. Hill, proprictor of the hotel, was informed of the fact, and the African was immedi- ately bounced. For a fow moments all was" quiot, but here and there were gathered knots of white boys in close consultation, Their topic of conver tion was “‘the nigger,” and their unani- mous verdict was that he should be thrashed for playing himsell off as a white man. They centered avound him and would have soon cut his hide to picces had not older heads counsolod otherwise. As it was, they permitted the offender to “git,” and ‘“git” on short notice. Two minntes later he was out of sight and has not been seen hy a white man since. The boys then waited on the white man and ordered him to leave, under penalty of a cow- hiding. Had not sober counsel Yrc- vailed again, he would not have had time to get his team hitched before his punishment came. As it was, both got. off, & negro here driving ‘the negro's team out of town, where he was met by the rvightful dreiver. All was quict for awhile until it was reported that the negroes here were enrvaged, banding to- gether, and determined to protect their brother in black. Several groups of them were seen, and in thirty seconds the boys were all out armed with shot- guns and starting to charge the dark masses, The square was crowded with people, all excited and the majority en- raged, Again, though, the swaying, vestloss, shouting mass was qulutoh. Both parties dispersed, and the whole- sale slaughter that seemed imminentat once wasaverted. The white man gave his name as Coggins, and said his head- quarters were in Newman, No doubt they have often imposed on people as they attempted to do here, but there is still less doubt that this will be their last attempt. —— For Coughs and Throat Disorders use Brown's Brovcuian Trocnes—*Have never changed my mind respecting them, except 1 think better of that which I began thinging well of. His various names are cata- logued as Glenn Vanskout, alias Frank Bradshaw, alias George Vanzant, alias James Green. He has served six term in the Joliet prison, and is the most in- veterate Hlic}nf his kind known. He is a venerable-looking white- haired man of sixty-eight years, and has had his neck stretched three times on suspicion of horse steal- ing,to force information from him,with- out avail. He s «d thirty years in the Joliet prison, and his total sentence was seventy-two years, He w d from Will county in 1 and in Mason county ary from the same county in 1864 for one yeary in 1865 from Hancock county for seventeen d fron county in 1 thirty-s years on twelve indictments of three rs each., He was released after serving the first three years on account of adefect in the indictment, and went to Hendersen county, wheve he wassent up on his last streteh for nu . He says he will never steal anotlier horse, but it is a mania with him, and he can not help it. Warden McClaughe thieves acquire o man numerous instances to man Miller. the silver tongued prayer- maker and devout Methodist conviet who prayed himself out of prison, was a saintly man-in every respeet, but he would steal horses. Another hor thief assured the warden,on the expir tion of his eighth term, that he would reform. His idea of reform was to steal enough horses to start a livery stable and then stop, buthe was back in prison again, to the warden’s astonishment, before his reform plan could be put in operation. Vanskout operated on a large s He had a number of con- federates. They used to take from ten to twenty horses a night in western Tllinois, put them aboard a big scow on the Mississippi, and ship them to Mem- is and other southern points and re- e handsomely on them. Many of Vanskout's confederates were lynehed, and Vanskout himsel{ narrowly escaped that fate several times, " e CHICAGO ano North- Western Railway Short Line.
