A Greek priest was walking along the street. and following him was borne by four men. Theys were ng rapidl s they arrvived at my L and the four 1-bea laid their burden on the ground. The priest then hegan to chant a service in wung his arms and his head, nw'ln\\h\ e his voice now going up to avery high piteh, now down to the lowest possible note he could reach. His chanting lasted for perhaps five minutes. He was ragged and dirty. His huge hat, onee black, had, by the action of the sun,and by age, and by dirt, assumed a divty-brown- ish color. Hc was some un- der the influence of wine. The four pall-bearers were ve i but not ragged. The bier was hmdl\ deserving the name. Any New England farmer could make a better one with an axe and saw in halfa day. Upon this was xFru:ld a heavy gray blanket. On the blanket _lay the body of the dead man, dressed in the clothes in which he had been taken sick., Ov his body was spread a dirty white cotton cloth. Not a mourner followed. Only a drunken priest and a rude bier and four men to bear it. The grave was a little more than a hole in the ground. It was both shallow and irregularly dug. Into this was thrown the hody of a man who had lived and died and now was thus buried. The object of stopping and performing a_sort of service here and there, passing through the streets on the way to the burial, is to pray all men that, since the m is dead, all will forgive him whatever they may have had against him. No coffin, no mourner: no father's grief, no mother's tear! While such are not very com- mornly seen, they are not very uncom- mon. e A Dastardly Business, Winnipeg Free Pre A number of the conductors on the Cadadian Pacifie have got themselves into trouble. Some time ago a spotter passed u\fng the line and caught eight conductors between North \)uv and Vancouver, His method of acting the spy was a con- lcm‘mhln one. He masa middle-aged, sickly man, and he represented himself as an old conductor who had no_money and broken down in health. He said he was trying to reach the Pacific coast and appealed to the various con- ductors as he met them* to pass him along as an act of kindness to an old brother conducter. Touched by his pitiful story and evident distress, the conductors lded to his earnest re- quests and let him ride free. All the conductors who so befriended him were reported; four have already been dis- charged, and four more will also, it is said, be similarly treated. This is said to be the only charge against these men, and there 1s considerable indigna- tion felt at the severe punishment meted out. Train Telegraphy. Engineer: A few days since on Le- high Valley train No. 12 a lady passen- ger beeamé suddenly and seriously il when the train was about fifteen min- utes west from Perth. At 4:53 p.m. the train operator dispatched a message to Dr. Shannon, of F met the train at the junc admnistered to the ‘patient while the train bowled aldhg to Easton. The train telegraph was also used suc fully in_providing a carriage for sick lady on her arrival, and a locomo- tive to convey the doctor back to his home. CHRISTMAS WARES !
