Thé boy wis not injured in any respect and the marks indicated simply that he had been given a good trouncing. The fact of there being two teachers concerned in the affair is plained by the rule of the board w requires that any teacher whipping a pupil shall have another teacher present as & witness, this being deemed as much a protection to the pupil as to the teacher, The purpose of this rule is to avoid any trouble, either from the undue ty of the teacher in anger or the sentations of a pupil as to what the punishment was. The instrument used in this ¢ s just what has been used in the Pierce street and other schools for some time—it being a piece of hickory, three feet long, about three- quarte an inch wide and an inch thick.
