PICKED UP ABOUT THE CITY. The Most Recent Developments in the Switchmen's Troubles. CHANGES IN THE RAILROADS. Matters Which Developed in the Vari- ous Courts Yesterday—County and City Taxes—Victims of the Knife. The Switchmen's Row. The charges made by Grand Master Mon- aghan of the Switchmen's Mutual Aid so- ciety against P. H. Mechan and Hugh Tighe, as published in yesterday's Beg, are de- nounced by the friends of the two gentlemen as unjust and absolutely untrue. Mr. Mechan claims that he withdrew from the lodge by hisown free will and was not guilty of any crookedness whatever. Meehan also states that he he has never used his ofticial position to replace competent men by favorites of his and that never in his life has he been guilty of overbering or ungentlemanly conduct. Tighe's fricnds claim that the telegrams ansas City, which reflected upon his character, were written by the master of the local lodge in that city and were to all in- tents and purposes as if dictated by the grand master whose control of local lodges is al- most absolute. Mechan claims that Monaghan would not dare to call a stril s the majority of the switchmen would refuse to follow his (Mon- aghan's) dictation, Railroad News. For some time past rumors have been afloat regarding changes which it was said were contemplated in the management of the Missouri Pacific. These changes, the reports stated were expected to take place yesterday. The necessary steps to them was the alleged presentation of the resignations of their division superintendents, namely Howard . ndent of the main line from edalin, and also of what is ington branch; James W, se jurisdiction extends from Kan- sas City to this city, and John B. Flanders, superintendent of the Nevada & Minden, Den Memphis, Atlantic, Lexington Soutl and @ _couple of other divisions of the rond. Mr. Parke it is unde stood declines to say anything about his r n signation, Mr. resignation it s sald was ted a8 early us the twi first of 18t month, though it1s claimed that the circumstances may permit him to_withdraw it before long, but it is not probable that the withdrawal will bemade. Yesterday, the Denver, Memphis, Atlantic division of the road, extending from Osuw: Kansas, to Pucblo, Cal., was turned to Superintendent Shacklin, fo one of the best known of the old Union Pacific men, Mr. Shacklin stands in great esteem with S, 1 H. The case of the state vs Mollie Schencko an inmate_of a Capitol avenue bagnio, and charged with robbing one of her ‘“‘custom- ers” was on trial before Judge Wakely. The testimony was of a rather deseription and attracted a large crowd of fallen women and toughs. The jury, therefore, found a verdict in accordance with the above ruling. The County and City Taxes, County Treasurer Bolln reported yes- terday that the uncollected taxes would probably amount to about cight per cent of the entird assessment. The Pullman Palace Car company Monday W granted a tem- porary injunction in the United States court restraining Douglas county from collecting taxes for 1857 which was duly served on the treasurer. It will be remembered that a similar injunction of 1886 taxes is now in the courts and a decision is not expected for some time. Caty Treasurer Rush has certainly reason to be proud of his success, s fully 85 per cent of the tax levied for 1586 has been paid. M. Rush says that Douglas county and Omaha contain ‘the best taxpuyers ‘in the world. They seem to take pride in paying the assess- ments made on their proper This prompt- ness is remarkable when the large amount of special tax levied for grading, paving and other improvements is considered. It is not unusual for a poor man owning a small prop- erty to have his gpecial tax swell n £50 to $300. Of course the value of his property is greatly enhansed, but his promptures to is something unusual. T'he forth statement of Ci surer Rush will be volumuous document.
