[YWO hot ROCKEFELLER'S PALACE. ption of the nest Seat in America. Correspondence San Francisco Chron- {cle: William Rockefeller 1s making an immense stir up in Westchester. No man who has taken up his residence on the banks of the Hudson in the past twenty years has made such a sensation or given employment to 5o many pairs of hands. r. Rockefeller is founding a home. The possessor of millions, the father of children, and imbued with the ancestral idea, he is building a mansion . 80 grand and so substantinl that generations hence, his descend- ants will bless him for an ancestor of good sense and culture, ns well as wealth. It isin the very heartof the most beautiful and picturesque region on_the Hudson that the oil king is building. The house is nearly com- pleted. Tt stands on an eminence ove inoliing the river. The ground is very high. ~ The view straight down tho river from the southern veranda is en- trancing. To the west is Haystraw bay —the bay of Nuples, Nym Crinkle called it, a long time ago in the World. The owner does not know himself, as yet, how much ho will spend in beautify- ing the interior of his house, but the total outlay, putting aside the cost of purely decorative work, will amount to about a quarter of a million. The mu- teriul used is gray stone, the style is old English, the size is 75x150 feet. It is thoroughly fire proof. Architect . L. Roberts drew the plans. He also de- signed the Standard Oil company’s buildings on lower Broadw: one of t,if one of the plainest, s tures y. Durability and solidity are ng characteristics of Mr. Rob- Such a substantial, massire and imposing residence as this nono ef the many millionaires whose country seats are scattered between Sing Sing and Spuyten Duyvil can boast. Gould's white-marble residence, David Dows’ stone mansion‘ the stately old brown- stone house of the Kingslands, on Kings- land point, the handsome country house of the late Robert Hoe, Greystone— these ave all inferior to the new count house of the oil king. Tt is the old Asph\wull estate, com- rising about eight hundred acres that 15 10 be turned topsy lur\'&', Of the old mansion and stables and innumerable outhouses not a vestige now remains save the solid-looking lodge-houses of granite with their pretty French roofs and stone porticos. The fine old en- trance gutes ure also i ‘With the lodges they are half hidden in foliare of luxuriunt growth. Mvr. Rockefeller paid $150.000 for the property, and was offered the day after $250,000 for it by D. Ogden Mills, who roamed over it fields and fished in its brook in poorer days und before he became a man of mil- lions. The purchase by Mr. JRockefel- ler murked the downfull of the house of Aspinwall, The family and its posses- sions were for a quarter of a century familiar objects to the denizens of Tarrytown and the rmrruundingx-uuxi!\»l. il Des Country liam H. Aspinwall led the lifo of an English gentleman. He killed his own mutton, like your true English noble- man, His sheop browsed in great nums bers on the hillsides. Cattle of rare beeeds grazed in the pastures. Blooded horses ate their heads off in their stalls, while British bulldogs guarded the stables surlily pre- cious straing of fancy fowls flockod in the hennery. There was nothing gaudy about tho Aspinwall es- tablishment, The cumbrous family carringe, yellow-wheeled and with hor- aldic emblems on the panels, wus the typical English family chariot, built for comfort’s sake and not beauty’s. Henvy= limbed Lnglish coach horses drew it along cumbrously, driven by an English flunky whose bulk was in keeping with the rest of the outfit. Mr. Aspinwall spont over $500,000 in improving and beautifying this property, and on it he pussed the happlost yeurs of his lifo, 3ut on the heels of the panie of 1878 came the great shrinkage in the value i of real estate, and Mr. Aspinwall’s fore tune, like that of othor great landown= ers around him, was almost irretriove ably impaired by it. In point of fact, & man must possess the wealth of a Gould or an Astor or o Vanderbilt to keep up such a vast estate. How many moen of considerable means have attenpted the hazardous feat of founding ancestral homes along this river? Mr. Gould's country houso is a reminder of shattered hopes. So is tho country seat just pur- chased by John Jacob Astor. So is the splendid mansion of William Rocke- feller. The new house will be ready for oc- cupation and the owner will move into it next spring., Mr. Rockefeller is a lover of the trotting horse, and his stables, when finished, will be as fino as any in the country. They will be de- signod to guit the particular purpose of Mr. Rockefeller—that of establishing an extonsive stud. A throe-quarters-of-a- mile race track, yet to be built, will en= able Mr. Rockefeller to try the speed of his flyers without going boyond lis own gates. This will be, in all” probability, the “fastest” private track in America, and will be built without re gard to cost. Mr. Rockefeller is giving employment toasmall army of workingmen. No man living within a couple of miles of his estate need be id&u if willing to work. A big farmhouse hard by was turned into a hoarding house a fow months ago for the accommodation of mechanics who lived too far away to go home every night. For the laborers who live in towns three or four miles distant special stages ave run. On the river front n big dock has been impros vised, where steamboats and propellors, laden with building material from the city, discharge their cargoes. Probably a unew and handsomer landing place will be constructed when Mr. Rockes feller builds a yacht whose eleguuce and proportions’ shall be in keeping with the rest of hi i The governor of Missouri has become jealous of the attention given to oute aws; but e still continues to recoms mend the famous Dr. Bull’s Cough Syfup for coughs and colds. The proprietors of Salvation Of st cure on earth for pain, will pay roward if any certificate pubse hed by them is found not genuines It costs only 25 cents a bottla, THE RAILWAY TINE TABLES.
