Davenport, K. of R, and 8. of FEagle Lodge No. 69, Buffalo, N. Y.—Colonel La- mon Message. Bome time ago it was anmounced that President Cleveland was a member of the order of Knii'ts of Pythias. This an- nouncement was hailed with delight by the many enthusiastic young knights in this elty, and that was counsidered a happy streak of luck which made the visit of the president to Omaha simultaneous with the convention of the grand lodge in this city. ‘The preparations, already extensive, for the encampment of the uniformed rank and attendant exercises of the grand lodge were made more thorough and 1mposing in order that the gallant knights of Nebraska might appear to good advantage before their dis- tinguished and illustrious brother. In all things liberal, the members of the order an- nounced that they were not disposed to be the least bit selfish in the distribution of the honors of the occasion, and generously ylelded to those not members of the order the porfect right to join in the reception to “Brother” Cleveland and pay to his excel- lenoy all the honors due from a loyal con- stituency. The citizens’ committee fully ap- ted the ties that bind members of secrot :alnlntlons. and led the conspicuous ~part in the ar- rangements to the order of which Mr, Cleveland was supposed to be an honored member. Asis ‘well known the arrange- ments for the reception have been carried out most harmoniously and everything is oum\al«m for & proper greeting to the chief magistrate. Desirous of according to “Knight” Cleve- land a fitting welcome, for one occupying his position in the lodze as well as ~ the land, the Knights have been stimulated to renewed efforts atexcellence; the tardy bers who had for some time absented th selves from drill and lodge meeting sua: developed a wonderful and est in the welfare of th and older members re frequent and lengthly visits from the “rusty” ones for the purpose of burnishing the latter's knowledge of the secret work; visions of fraternal and individual recognition with the presidential rother have lighted up the lives of many a young and enthusiastic Pythian, and the anticipation with which the entire member- ship of this young and progressive ler has awaited the coming of Oc- fober 12, has been pleasing to note, For the personal feelings of Mr,Cleveland it is perhaps well that an unfortunate mistake should be corrected. It would certainly be inbarrassing to the distinguished visitor to ;e met by demonstrations whieh would be as novel t0 him as the resiguation of a demo- cratic office-holder. At will be a surprise to the Pythians of this eity and the recrel of the mauy friendsof the ler to learn that beyond being the chief magistrate of the nation, Grover Cleveland §sbut a thoughtful eivilian, and never at any time a member of the order ol Knignts ot graciously con- 188, Just how the report of the president’s knighthood became current is not known; it, however, seems to have eminated froma source, the authority of which no one thought to guestion. lying upon the correctness of this report thea knights have wade their preparations accordingly, and it will be a severe disap- intent to them to learn of the error. This disappointment will of course not affect the Pythian display on the 12th. The reception to the president by its members will be as hearty as if he were a brother knight, and the splendid appearance of the gallant order will nevertheless be to the dis- tinguished visitor one of the most pleasing features of the occasion THE PRESIDENT'S DAY, Preparations Being Made for a Grand and Imposing Celebration, General Wheaton, chief marshal of the Cleveland reception parade, was at the board of trade rooms yesterday afternoon, and re- ceived reports from organizations that will varticipate. As rar as known, the only bodies which will take part in the exercises are the Secona regiment of United States infantry, from the fort, the First and Sec- ond regiments K. ot P, a division of the same from Red Oak, Ia., the Omaha Turn- vereln, tne Platts-Dautscher verein and the Indian band from the national school at Genoa, in this state. Other societies de- sirous of taking part in the reception are re- quested to notify General Wheaton as soon as possible, ‘I'he general said that it was not the intention to have a procession in whicn the president would take part, but rather ta, form lines on either side of the streets between which the presidential }».'uty could be driven, ~After the passage of the latter, however, If it were decided upon favorably by the other societies, they could parade with the Second infantry and the Knizhts of Pythias who proposed to follow a certain line of march. [ ‘There not being as yet a suflicient number of reports to warrant an issue of a detailea order, the following plan was draughted for the loeation ot troops, societies and clups: Regulars will be formed on Tenth street, right resting _on Jackson street: uniformed Knights of Pythias on left, connecting with regulars, extending the line to the left along Tenth street to Harney street, east on Lar- noy street to Ninth, north on Ninth to Far- nam, west on Farn to Sixweenth, and north on Sixteenth to Cuming and west on Cuming street, = Civic associations, clubs, societies, ete., will be assigned to positions in the line whenever they report. They will be formed on Douglas and Harney streets, between Firteenth and Eleventh streets; on Dodge, between Fifteenth and Sixteenth; on Eleventh, between Harney and Douglas, and on Fifteenth, between Harney and Dodge streets, along the route to be taken by the president. _All to be in position by 8 o'elock 8. M., on Weanesday on the 12th of October. Yesterday a genfleman in conversation with a BEE reporter said it would be utterly impossivle for the president to be driven over the route laid out within one hour. He showed that the line before it reached Cum- ing street was nearly forty blocks long, or more thap three miles, while the line beyond that poiut was once and a balf as long. 1t would be impracticable to rush the presiden- tial party over such a line 1n such a time, A HALF HOLIDAY FOR THE CHILDREN. In view of the coining visit of the presi- dent, Mr. James has sent the following no- tice to the several schools in the city, All the schools may be dismissed next Wednesday from recess to noon. Outside schools may be dismissed earlier if neces- sary. Pupils luwsvm at 9 o'clock wmay be called present the whole morning, and tar- diness in the afternoon, due to the presi- dent’s visit need not be recorded, Ali the schools are oxpected to be in session as us- ual in the attérnoun, Itis believed that this arrangement will give all the ehildren time to see the presi- dent and his party, and the oceasion gives an excellent opportunity tor valuable in- struction whiel shoukd be lmproved. Prosident Cleveland Will Inaugurate it on the 12th, An cxtra force is at work on the wa- gon portion of the Union Pacific bridge, S0 as to have the entire structure com- pleted when President Cleveland arrives here on the 12th inst. Itis stated on good authority that he has been inyvited to the opening and has accepted. The pro- gramme is to have him and Mrs. Cleveland leave their train at the Transfer and take a carriage and they will be the first varty that were ever transfer- red across the Missouririver on a wagon bridge at this point, A long procession of carriages will follow, containing promi- nent Omaha citizens and invited guests, the bridge will be gaily decorated, the passage of trains will be stopped and there will be a grand time generally. John Dillon held the boards at the Boyd on Monday night, He played to a packed house, the largest he ever appeared befcre in Omaha.
