THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS. Tran ions in the Wheat Pit Entirsly of o Local Obaracter. CORN RULES AT AN ADVANCE. No Indications of Life Shown In Oats and Provistons — The Cattle Trade s Bad—Gen eral Quotations, e d PRODUCE MARKETS, CiticAGo, Oct. 6.—{Special Telezram to the Bk, )—T'he early strength in the wheat market appeared to be based upon foreign news partly and partly upon the strength shown by outside markets yesterday, while this board forgot money-making and wel- comed the president. The market was almost wntirely local again with the exsep- tion, it I5 said, of a sale of May and the pur- chase of December for New York account. This absence of outside orders made the market quite susceptible to the influence of quick-moving local traders, who were buying more than they sold early iu the session and reversed the situation later. Liberal receipts in the northwest, coupled with a light export movement, were sufficient to induce a desire among the scalping element who had been buying early to unload. The strength of early cables, however, was not keeping pace with these offered supplies and a decline began and was messurably helped by late private cavles, which were weak in tone. ‘The opening was at 7T for November, 78%e for December and 79 for May. The highest figures touched were ¢ above these for November and May, and these were obtained almost immedlately after the open- ing and dost alnost as quick. December did not (nhr a fraction from the opening. Under the influence noted above the market held fairly steady until about noon and then de- clined to the close, which was about the low- et point of the session, at 713¢e bid for No- yember, 72%{@73)c for December and e bid for May. ‘The opening in corn was at {c advance over the clonlmg ngura! of Tuesday at 427{c for Novembqr, ¢ for December and Wuc for May. These tigures were not bettered during the session. There appeared to be but little gencral interest in the market and the volume of business was small. Oats again failod to shuw any signs newed life and the market continues ln lhu old rut so far as prize changes are concerned by reason of the existing dullness. In provisions there was no particular life In. the movement. Traders seemed to be governed by circumspection and in their trad- ing there was neither freedomn nor vigor atany time durlnF the day. The feeling was some- what bearishly inclined. At 1 o'clock Octo- ber short ribs were the only articles that showed an advance over Tuesday’s final prices. I[n January pork and lard the de- cline actually sutfered was be in October, No- vember and December lard, 2}¢c and in Jan- uary short ribs 2ge. October short ribs were taken care of by corner representatives and a large share of Tuesday’s break was recovered, the resting quotation sho\vmf an improve- ment of 27¢c. For thiserticletheday's range was 87.00w7,45 and the closing $7.40. In Inid tluctuations were confined to _narrow limits and the fin | prices stood at $6.45 for Octowse and $6,32¢ for November and De- cember, January closed at $1: 2714 for pork, ‘:‘I’) 4@6,40 for lard and $6. for short i AFTERNOON SEsstoN—W heat steady; Oc- November at 1%c Corn steady. d. Reading and Western Union were the most active stocks and led the list. The bear party endeavored to force prices down by short selling, and they were credited with being short 100,000 shares. As prices did not go down the shorts became scared and begun covering. The same set of dealers who have bought Western Union for several days past were again heavy buyers, and turned the course of prices upward and it advanced 2§ per cent, Reading followed closely and mt- vanced 21, St, Paul 1}, and Northwestern }¢ per cent. The most of the list was ! to 8{ per cent better. Trading up to noon was almost as Leavy as during the entire day Wednes- day, being 94,000 shares of Keading and 67,- 800 shares uf Western Union, Reading is re- garded as the bigeest gamble on the list, and lable to violent fluctuations, hence operators are more inelined to trade in it than in other securities on the list. The Bajtimore & Onlo deal |s the chief feature In the market. It was given out In a semi-ofticial way that the contract between the Western Union and Bsltiwore & Ohio was signed this morning, and that Western Union will issue sufticient stock, sald to be $5,000,000, to take up the in- debtedness and capital stock of the Baltimore & Ohio telegraph. All that remains is to wait for the action of stockholders to ratify the contract, and as Western Union bas already secured enough proxies, it 1s said that there ©an be no fallure. ‘The completion of the tel- ograph deal is regarded tby the bullsasa #ood thing for the market. They all argue THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: bran, 812.00@13.00 per @12.00 per ton that the condition of business throughout the country warrants a big improvement in rail- road securities, They agree that there has been a cloud, but that it has been removed and a silver lining is now apparent.
