The republican caucuses of this city are called for next Saturday evening. Ladies, see combined writing desk and sewing machine. Domestic office, 105 Main street, Hattie Nolan was taken in Saturday night for beng drunk and on the street too late, Beveral nimrods of this ity made great avoc among the ducks in this vicinity Yesterday. Elder Joseph Luft will preach at Saint's church this evening at 7:30 o'clock. A cordial invitation 1s extended to all. The United States express service here has been supplied with new wugons, and all the old ones have been laid aside, awaiting orders, The republican county. convention meets in this city on the 11th. The dem- ocrats hold their county convention next Thursday, the 6th, Mrs. L. B. Crafts was happily reminded Saturday that it was her birthday anni- yersary. She réceived a draft for $2,000 from eastern relatives. Work on the new fire department building has been delayed on account of non-urrival of joists from Tennessee. The material is at last here and the work will be resumed to-day. Miss Mamie Hiil gave a birthday party Saturday afternoon at her home on Fifth avenue. She received a choice lot of presents from her school-girl friends, and a merry time was had, The police made 161 arrests last month, of which seventy-eight were drunks and thirty-four vags. The patrol wagon was used in eighty-six cuses, and there was but one false alarm, The new hook and ladder truck, made for this city in Chicago, is now complete, and nwaitinf shipping orders. As the city has not its new building in readiness to receive it, the truck will probably be held in Chicago until that is done. The attendance at the Methodist church last evening was very large. At the close of the services Dr. McCreary and wife said good-byes and shook hands with the many friends made during their three years’ stay in this city. They leave this evening for California, County politics are now absorbin reat deal of time and attention. The ourth ward caucus was a common topic on the streets yesterday and many an mated discussions were the result, ~ Bet- ting on the results of the convention and of the election was very prevalent. The county board.re ntl¥ decided to purchase a poor farm r Neola. Now the discovery is made that there is a legal obstacle in the way of their voting th necessary amount of money. 'The bae- fnin is decided off until the board meets n next regular session, and perhaps longer. Express wagons were yesterday busy carrying men and women to a picni which was under the supervision of M and Mrs. J. C. Metcalfe, about two miles near the old county poor farm. The Metcalfes are building a house there for the accommodation of such excursionists. A voung man by the name of Lewis was brought before 'Squire Schurz Sat- urday and placed under $150 bonds to ni)punr October 6 to answer to the charge of carrying concealed weapons. His conduct was such as to frighten a lady neighbor and she entered a complaint. His father became his surety and he was released, A larger force of men will be putat work this morning on the new fire build- ing on upper Broadway, and the work rnshml rapidly to completion, It is hought that the bulldinf will be ready for the new hook and Iadder truck in about six weeks. The truck will carry sixteen ladders and weighs 7,000 pounds. Even the morning prohibition sheet which has dropped high license policy and become very rabid since one of its family was given a state position, adver- tises a Des Moines house as furnishing “pure rye and club whiskies.” For a rohibition organ in a prohibii state his may not look well, but advertising pays—the paper anyway. The abstract firm of Smith & Roberts has sold out to Messrs. Wadsworth, Mc- Intyre & Co., who for years have been in this line of business at” Oregon, I1l. Mr. 8. B. Wadsworth is already on the ground and will give his personal time and attention to the business. He will move his family here very soon and be- come closely and permanently 1dentified with the interests of the city. . e List your property with Couper & Judson, No. 120 Main'st. e The bar fixtures and furniture of the the St. Louis house will be sold at sherifls sale, Monday, Oct. 2, at 9 o'clock a. m. e a Money to loan. He has a fine assortment of the best &oods. ————— The Smokers’ Delight, The cigar and tobacco business of T. D, King & Co., No. 543 Broadway, has had & phenomenal growth, Although one of the youngest cigar factories in the district it has speedily grown to be the largest. The firm’s retail business has also in- creased rapidly, necessitating an en- largement of their quarters. The im- provements now completed muke this one of the most attractive cigar stores in the west. ‘The whole place has been fitted up elegantly, mirrors, draperies and adornments making it entitled to be ealled *'the smokers’ delight.”’ The new #1de cases and wood finishings in cherry and maple are especially admired. This work shows the skill and taste of Btrock Hros, who have recently ess tablished a factory in this aity, and who need no better evidence of their ability to do all kinds of interior tinish- ing. Ff‘hn shop in the rear of these handsome retail parlors is also enlarged, and made convenient as well as capacious. The stock is too large and too varied to pernnt a full description. It embraces every possible article which the user of the weed could wish for, There are many novelties as well, and rich goods, without apparent limit. s 3 ‘The annual holiday prize distribution begins tormorrow, With every cash pur- chase of twenty-live cents the customer is given a ticket with a number, and the prizes are already on exhibition. ‘Lhey are more numerous and more costly than ever. There are twenty in all, a hand- some cigar holder being” the lowest, and a benulfiul meerschaum pipe costing $30, being the highest. They are all beauties, and should be s — - ‘Watches, clocks, jewelry, ete,, the best in the city. C., \ou, jeweler, No. 415 Brondway. Repairs u specialty. 53 THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: MONDAY. OCTOBER 3. SUNDAY IN COUNCIL BLUFFS The fainte Flook to Ohurch While the 8in- ners Go Picknicking. BUILDING ACTIVITY CONTINUES. A Nuvel Way of Raising Money For a Parsonage—The Salvation Army Happy On the Way—Per- sonal Activity in House Building. Allen & Bell, the architects, are being kept very busy furnisbing plang, es- pecially for residences. The showing for the city is very encouraging. They have just furnished plans for Mrs. T. B. Lewis, who is to build & house on Fourth avenue, between Eleventh and Twelfth streets. The contract has been let to A. T. Lainson for §1,600. J. G. Garner, of Cbicago, is building three houses, neat tenement cottages, on Eighth avenue, between Thirteenth and Fourteenth streets. They wlll be com- pleted in ten days or so. The two cottages being built by H. J. Chambers on Seventh avenue, between Fifteenth and Sixteenth streets, are rap- hl‘li ay[kranchin,i completion. : . F. Kimball is making extensive im- provements to his residence on Fourth avenue, The rear part of the house is being raised to two stories, a large bay window being put in, and various changes made, costing $1,500 or more. The plans are sbout completed for C. J. Colby’s second block of ten houses, near the transfer. No two of these houses will be alike. They vary in cost and will be built just assoon as the plans can be completed, and the bids received. ‘The list might be extended indefinitoly. In all parts of the city new roofs appear, and one has but to stand in Fairmount park, or on any other prominent eleva- tion, to mnote the wonderful increase which this year 1s bringing to the resi- dence portious of the city. it ‘“‘Happy on the Way." The Salvation army still holds forth at the old opera house on Bryaat street. Their lease of the hall has just expired, but it is understood that they will renew it for another year. Although holding meetings nightly as formerly, they seem to be losing prestige, and many who re- g:rdud them favorably a while ago are ginning to look upon them with dis- trust, This corps of the army is _at present in charge of Captain Annie Holmes, with Cadet Dries as best bower. It is barely possible that under the most favorable circumstances Captain Holmes might be regarded as a pleasing public speaker, but it is a very evident fact that her vocabulary is none too extensive, nor her rhetoric too refined to pass muster among persons of ordinary culture. A tew hours daily companionship with Webster, together with an intimate com- 'mniunshiu with Swinton, would render her discourses quite intelligible, and as the years roll by she will probably over- come her antipathy to the letter “H,” a characteristic which should endear her to the Anglomaniac portion of the popu- lation, She has _enthusiasm in abundance, without her work would hardly be ul. ‘The meetings are being y attended, but the army seem con- fident that with ' cooler evenings the old crowds will return. Last winter the hall was packed every night. Now it looks lonesome most of the time. The same noisy street parades con- tinue and the band is still practicing, to the torture of those ears which chance to be within hearing distance. The number of the marchers keep about the same, tlecruusin* if anything. There are a few familiar faces, but the changes in the ranks are noticeable, the enthusiasm of the the soldiers apparently dying out and causing short terms of active service. Many who were enthusiastic on the start have dropped ont to give room to new conrers. Thus the motley crowd keeps “happy on the way.” — A Stray Horse. About two weeks ago a stray horse was picked up here and placed in the pound for safe keeping. All that could be learned concerning the animal coroborated sthe theory that some fetlow had rode into the city and then turned the anima! loose. Yesterday it was discovered that the horse was the property of Mr. P. H, Wind, whose place of business is not a block distunt from where tie horse has been for two weeks past, and yet he was ignorant of 1ts whercabouts. He has been ht\vil)% the horse pastured about two miles from the city, The man who owned the pasture missed ‘the animal and has been searching 1n_all directions for it without success, Yesterday he came to the city, and oh inquiry found the animal in the pound, where a good sized board bill has by this time accrued. As Mr. Wind is expected to pay the pasturage bill, the question arises as to _who shall pay the pound expenses. The matter will probably be adjusted between the parties concerned. The animal is a valuable one, and is gladly recovered by the owner, who did not know it was miss- ing. ——— One thousand head of one, two and three-year-old steers for sale. St. Paul's church was crowded last night, every seat being taken and extra ones required to be placed in the aisles. Music formed the leading feature of the evening, the service being chanted, and there being special anthems and solos. The new orgamst, W. J. Gratian, who with s father built this grand instru- ment, opened with an inspiring and seemingly almost inspired vyoluntar, “An offertory to Saint Cecilia, Mr. Gratian 1s one of the finest organists in the west and is winning his way into public favor here very rapidly, and by werit, There was a chorus choir of mixed voices, which rendered special music, among the selections being Woodwurd’s anthem, “The Radiant Morn Hath Passed Away.” Mr. and Mrs, I. M, Treynor duet, 1 Waited for the Lord,” by Men- delssohn, Mr. Treynor also gave a solo, **Calledst Thou Thus,” in which his clear tenor voice held the congregation in lis- tening stillness, The “Concert Kantasie,” in closing, caused many in the great congregation to hnger until the last note died away, It is propdsed to have similar musical services on the evening of the first Sun- day of each month, Arrangements are being made for a large surpliced choir of ave As boys, 'i‘lw sermon last night was preached by Rev. J. Nelson Jones, a brother graduate with the rector from Cambridge. He gave u clear-cut outline of what consti- tuted true manliness, and an earnest ap- peal for all to pattern after the perfect man, e Smashing the Churches, For some weeks past the classes in the Congregational Sunday school have been quietly raising money to help along the parsunage fund, The method of securing the money was somewhat peculiar, Each class was furnished a miniaturg church made of clay, and these served as rather ecclesiastical savings banks, for the de- posit of such nickels and dimes as the scholars could spare. Yesterday at the regular session of the school these little churches were broken and the contents counted out. The total amount reached Besides this amount one class of young Iadies have pledged $100 to the sume fund, and the school is soon to give a socinl, by which they hope to reach the full $200 which has been pledged for the school. The new parsonage, located next to the church, is a fine one and is about comploted. The pastor hopes to be able to move his family into the new home by the middle of the month. —ren J. W. and E. L.
