'— ' 1 ETTING UNDER HEADWAY. #rd:y Everything Will Bs Ranning ' Bmoothly at the State Fair, METHING ABOUT THE SHOW. r. Dogge’s Stuffed Animals and Man- akins—''Queen Broom Corn'" ter Uounty’s Magnificent Dis play—Notes and Persunals, [FROM THE BEE'S LINCOLN BUREAU.] Ithough the weather for two days had een detrimental to the fair entries, all the clerks were kept busy during Sunday Bnd until after midnight getting ready, nd even yesterday morning the jam at he secretary's office was immense. The day opened up bright and clear, with hundreds still applying for space. Be- fore to-might everything will be in Bmooth running order, fo that those at. tending Tuesday will sce the greatest fair fn the United States under full headway. Those in trouble about entering should hpply to Willian R. Bowen, superinten- dent, or Robert E. Treusch, head gate- keepcr. Those who desire return cars for thair goods or stock or anything re- garding freight or drayage should apply to O. M. Druse, superintendent of trans- portation, who can be found atthe en« trance gate. Any whoare in trouble about matters on the ground should apply to chief of police, J. H. Hamilton, or John Afferbach, assistant. On Saturday might a little difference sprung up between the managers and J. C. Bonnell, superintendent of Art hall, and Mr. Bonnell immediately resigned and Major Hastings was given his old place much to the satisfaction of exhibitors. He having just returned from a visit to the east 18 in good conditon and ready to wait upon a demanding publicjatany time dur- ing the twenty-four hours 1n the day, and says that everybody will be made happy by giving them plenty of room even if he has to double up some other exhibitor. Among the many tine exhibits in Art, Hall perkaps the most attractive from its peculiar collection is that of Dr. Dogge, consisting of stuffed birds and animals, skeletons of human beirgs and manakins consisting of several hundred kinds. In addition he shows some clegant varieties of imported smokers’ goods consisting of the finest variety of pipes ever shown “in this state. This collection alone would require a whole day's study. ‘The Frazier Bros., have added a line to ‘Nebraska’s motto “‘Corn is King,'' by saying ‘‘Broom Corn is Queen’’ and make a magnificent display of their goods. Other exhibits of specinl merit are here displayed which will be mentioned before the week closes, In Agricultural hall the exhibit far sur- passes that of any previous year either in quality or quantity. Among the twenty- Bix counties nxhibltimfi products none de- serve more attention than Custer county, which is in charge of J. L. H. Knights, soeretary of the county ugricultural so- ciety. t the present writing they have by odds the largest single exhibit in the hall; in grain they show s teen varie- ties of wheat, twelve varieties of oats, three varieties of rye, two varieties of barley, upward of twenty varieties of corn, besides flour, cornmeal and graham made from Mills in their county. In grasses they have Hungarian millet, six varioties of tame grasses and eighteen kinds of native grasses: vegetables in endless variety of immense size and choico kinds, some grown on sod. Their show of onions, beets, potatoes, cabbage and melons eclipses all previous county exhibits, They also show some very fine brick made in Broken Bow, the county seat. This county bears the reputation of being one of the finest counties ‘in the state as well as one of the largest. 1t would be worth the while of those seek- ing homes in this fair state, to examine this exhibit and learn of the benefits in this grand county. THE POULTRY EXHIBIT. The poultry building is “iCCIfi arranged for their purpose and i3 well filled. C'here are over forty varieties of fowls making more than 700 individual birds. There are 280 entries. This shows an increase of 50 rer cent in numbers over last year and the difierence in quality is beyond all comparison. Several chickens are on exhibition costing over $1 dollars, Among the prominen exhibitors in ti line are J. H. Nancy & Co., of Crete, who show a nice lot of pets; S. S. Barton, of Biue Hill, and P. J. Osterman, of Wis- ner; although this is Mr, Osterman’s first visit to the State fair, he 18 in no wise in the rear of the procession, having taken grunt pains in breeding and shows some ne fowls in (mmfiru Buff Cochins, Stand- ard Light and White Brahmas, White Cochins and Flymouth Rocks; he is very much interested in the work and takes pains to present the prominent points. STOPPED BY THE SHERIFF. Last year Stewart, Chute & Co., a lum- ber firm then doing business in Lincoln built a building in which to exnibit, and as the building was not bemg used by their assigns this year the board gave Miss A, Farnsworth and Mrs. Van Al- styne the privilege of usingit as an annex tothe Art halls, A miserable wretch named Young, claiming to represent the lumber company of Chicago, wanted to receive an oxtortionate ~rent for and because the board or ladies refused to pay he proceeded to tear down the building, but was soon taken in by Sheriff Hamilton, when he made threats that his company would burn every building on the grounds, The ladies now have the building filled with over one hundred handsome oil paint- ings and charcoal drawings. THE HORSE E The horse exhibit is beyond all antici- pation, and indeed the secretary was S telegraph some parties who were coming not to do so, as the entire possible spiee was occupied. A car load of Shetland pomes and several buffalo are on the grounds. They are especially attractive to theiadies and children. TUESDAY'S PROGRAMME.
