Some time since the manager of the Lin- coln freight bureau received a document from Mr. Grifliths in the form of a com- plaint that was directed, to the Lincoln freight bureau, and this is evidently the | communication that Mr, Griffiths olaims has received no attention. Af proverly addressed the board would have received it. INDIAN DEPREDATIONS, The governor has received numerous letters regarding 4he injury to game and in some instances to stock committed by wandering Indians in the northwestern counties of the state. Among these let- ters came & numerously signed petition which the governor forwarded (o the - terior department at Washington aecom- panied by a personal letter. Yesterda, the following reply was reccived by the commissioner of fudian affairs: ASHINGTON, Sept. L—Hon, J. M. ‘Thayer, governor of Nebraska, I have re- ceived your communication dated Aug. 17, 1857, enclosing a petition signed by ls{ . Woods, F. R, Peale and 100 others, all citi- ens of Keith and adjacent counties in the orth of Nebraska, dated Aue, 9, 1887, com- rhul\lnu that the Indians of Pine Ridze and Rosebud agencies, Dakota, are roaming about in said counties destroyiug game, and requesting that steps be taken to cause the Indians to moved to their proper You urge that measures be taken said Indians on their reservation, or t keep them outside the limits of said state. In reply I haye the honor to say that I have this addressed letters on the sub- ject to the United States Indian agents at said agencics, directing each to ndoln proper measures to secure the return of all Indians of the bands complained ot belonging to sad agencies, respectively, to their reservations. Said agents are directed to make reports in the matter, atas early a date as practicable, on receipt of which any further steps in the premises which may be deemed proper, will taken. Very revx\-ct(ully, J. D. C. ATKINg, Commissioner. NEW NOTARI The following new notaries public were commissioned yesterday by the governor: Charles W. Anson, Neligh; itmios Bingatty, SargonntiGuater ouity, Franklin ', Huffman, Manchester, Cus~ ter county; Robert Williams, Omaha: Enwold Enwoldson, St. Paul; George D. Bennett, Tecumseh; G. L. Post, York. D JUDC Mr. MASON, Mr. Holdrege and Mr, b kins, Marquette, were in Dincoln the entire day Sunday and it is stated that they had a long interview with Judge Mason relative to the rate question in the state upon which the republican county con- vention took such aggressive grounds, It is absolutely impossible to gain any facts regarding the conference but it 18 Krobnl)lu that nothing definite has yet een promised in the way of reductions. There is one fact that the people of the state can rely upon, and that is that no torms will be accepted by the board of transportation that do not directly secure radical reductions in freight rates for every town and shipping point in the state, hat the board is working for is the state entire, and nothing will ac- ceptod that would simply benefit a few of the more important points, The Lincoln freight bureau is working for rates direct for Lincoln, and the city expects, in com- mon with every other point, to_be bene- fitted In a general reduction. To-day the hearing of the charges against the Eik- horn line will be heard, and it 18 exvected that it will be an important meeting, at which a large number of railroad men will be n attendance. STATE FAIR NOTES. Robert W. Blake, of Long Piue, has en- tered for exhibition a collection of native Nebraska grasses, 283 in nuwmber. The B. & M. extende its platform at the grounds feet to accommodate shippers in loading and unloading. In fact, it requires no small amount of courage to sit in a lonely watch tower at night away out in the oountr?' wlong a railroad. It takes considerable tact to handle tramps and unruly persons who may be passing, and are always willing, it seems, to create trouble at any cost, It 1s surpris- ing how many of the fair sex, weak, del cate creatures, as man has seen fit to eall women, have taken to telegraphy asa means of oblaining a hivelihood, and what a degree of nerve and firmness they display under trying and dangerous cir- cumstances, Men have not ceased to recount the one daring exploit of Grace Darling of to speak with pride of the mauly heroism displayed by Florence Nightingale. *Not long ago,'" said a gontleman re- cently in conversation with a Dispateh reporter, I met a mostsingular a Sdlll“ ing w n in a little town in the west. 'One afternoon an express t - rived and left at the station in my box of money, the amount I do not r ember. Later in the day arough box containing the body of a man who had been killed was landed ou the platform, and 1t was found it could not be removed until the next day. Well, both boxes were carried in, and I must confess it was not very pleasant to sleep with a golden treasure on one side and a lifeless body secretary for Governor Furnas at the fair and George Dykeman of Seward, will have charge of the secretary’s books in the speed department. Among the improvements at the grounds are the poultry house doubled 1n size, two new buildings for express offi- ces, the fish exhibit building increased one-thira in size, and the latter supplied with separate water mains for an exclus- e supply. As the money had been forwarded very quietly, I felt confident that no one knew anything about it, and 30 was not troubled with any serious ap- prehensions. he night proved to be very dark and itbeged to ramn. I had been lying awake for some time watching the bright scin- tilations, of the lightning from the wires vhen clearly and_ distinctly across the line came the startling message: ‘Watch that box, watch that box.’ 1 sprangup at once and tried to find out from whom the message came. I telegraphed to n number of points but no one knew an) teing about it. Finally I came to the I had been dreaming, and arcely got into bed when ze” was heard again. instrument began to rate, repeating the words over and over again: ‘Watch that box, watch that box.’ At onco I gotup and pulled out a heavy Colt's revolver that had been rust- ing in that office, and found to' my hor- ror it wouldn't work. I wus afraid to go near the box containing the dead man; for I now felt sure that a live one was in it. The treasure was too heavy for me to carry, and to go out and leave it for a moment would have given the villain in the box an opportunity to take it. What to do I scarcely knew. ‘Lhe instrument clicked, clicked, and the same short line message was repeated over and over again. By aid of a flickering hight I could see the rough box very plainly at the other ond of the station. 1t gave no signs of life. Finally I secreted myself behind a dry goods box where I could see aud not be seen and 1 held in my hand an iron bar and the old rusty revolver, these were the only weapons of defense I had. 1did not wait very long before I thought I saw the Iid of the coffin move. I was not mistaken, eicher. Pretty soon it was pushed gently aside, and the head of the most villamous-looking man was pushed out. 1 saw through the whole scheme now, and well it had been planned. He got out from his temporary sepulcher and lit a dark lantern. He moved cautiously about, evidently search- ing for the treasure. As he drew closer and closer to where I was I was afraid my hard breathing would reveal my_ hiding place. He passed me un- noticed, and [ knew now was my only chance. The man heard me move, and turned quickly, but not guick enough to ward off a well aimed blow, as it after- wards proved. I struck him near the ear with the bar and with suflicient force to fell him to the floor. Almost over- come with excitement, Iran to the near- est neighbor’s, and returned to find the bird had flown. The marks of carriage wheels in the mud could be plainly seen, and while I was gone his confederates had arrived? founa their unlucky pal, and taken him away, but had left the box. I never found out who he was, neither could [ learp from whom the strange message of warning came. I am not superstitious, but I never could ac- count for the occurrenco only by ascrib- g it to supernatural causés.”’ *Here her story ended,” continued the gentleman, “and I believe that every word of it is true.
