B, SouTnARD, City Uh:‘r\hm d LAWYER HONG YEN CHANG. The Mongolinn Who Has Become a ember of the New York Bar. A few days ago the fact was chronicled in these columns, says the Hartford Cour- ant, that the New York legislatnre had vpassed an act authorizing the supreme court of the state to waive the alicnage of Hong Yen Chang, a native of China, but now a resident of New York, and to regularly admit and license him to prac- tice as an attorney and counselor in all the courts of the state, provided, of course, he passed the usual examination admitting him to the bar. Hong Yen Chang came to this country with the second detachment of Chinese stu- dents about thirteen z\:-urx ago. He was first sent toschool at'Northampton. His chum was Chang Mun Yew, who has made a splendid record for himsclt since his return to China, having tauken the hignest official position secured by any of the boys who were educated in Amer- ica. Hong YenChang soon sent to Mr. Stebbin hool at Springficld, after which, in 1875, he came to Hartford and entered the high school, where he at once took a high stand. While attending 8chool he boarded with the family of Mr. William B. Smith. Chan did not remain at the high school to graduate, but went instead to the pre- paratory school at Andover, In 1879 he entered Yale, where he was one of the foremost students in his class, taking from the first a high stand in scholarship, His chum at college was Mun Yew, who will be remembered as one of the most popular coxswaing Yale ever had. In 1881 the Chinese students were recalled, and Chang went with them, very much dis- um:uuum( and chagrinned at not being able to complete bis studies. He went, however, with the determination that he would return as soon as practicable to resume his course. Upon reaching China he was I;lnccd at a naval school. He soon tired of the monotaony of hislife and managed to obtain his release. He then visited his aged mother, but only to say farcwell for a sccond time. By means of small savings which he accumulated, and through the assistance of friends he soon found himself in possession of a suflicient sum to bring him to this country. At this juncture occurred an accident that will Allustrate his churacter. A studentfriend, who, like himself, had been recalied, im- plored for assistance to enable him tc reach his home in a distant point in China. Chang willingly loaned him his entire capital, and then, for the second time, sct out to obtain funds to enable him to complete hiseducation. He finall secured enough to get him to Shanghal, from which point he sailed for Honolulu, where a brother of his had bult up a succeseful business. Here he entered o law office and showed himself 80 apt a student that at the end of a year he was oftered a salary of $1,200 to re- main. He was anxious to become better grounded in law, however, and so re- wurned to the United States. He entered Columbia law sehool in 1845, and agnin 1 in his class. Atthe time of his graduation, which occurrad a year a0, he reccived épecial mention for pro- ficiency shown in the examinations. He passed” last summer in this city as the fguml of Dr. Oliver C. Smith, and he was e 50 during the summer of 15865, He was with Messrs. Hyde, Gross & Hyde during his sojourn in Hartford, and “at- tributes much of his subscquent success to his work under them. Last fall he returned to New York and entered the office of a leading law firm in that city., It was here that Chang was met with the most diflicult obstacle that had yet confronted him. e desired to beconie a member of the Kings county bar, but was prevented from taking the exasmination by the pro- visions of the law relating to Chinese emigration, A well known judge became interested in his case, and succeeded in securing the passage of the bill already ulluded to, which made it possible for Chung to beadmitted to the bar, The examinations have now been successfully passced, and he is a full-fledged lawyer, It is more than probable that he will re- ceive a large share of the patronage of the Chinese population of New York, and his many friends in this city will wish him every success in his profession, Attest:
