M[STAKABLE ANGLO-SAXON ho Live 8tock Oommission 8ays Colorado Must Not Quarantine Nebraska Oattle, LEANING OUT THE DIVES The Great Walking Match—A Neat Burglary —The Dawson Will Case—~The State Fisheries, Military Notes, M THE BEE'S LINCOLN BUR unreasonable and mction of the Colorado | stock com- mission in quarantining against Nebraska will soon break its legitimate fruitag Judging from the temper of the Nebraska commission and its action in the mat- ter. Colorado, in this quarantine against its castern neighbor, prohibits the impor- tation of young stock and blooded stock into Colorado contines, and the result is that many Nebra breeders and deal- ers suffer and are placed in the same .catalogue with Illinois dealers, while their stock is as perfect acd free from disease as any in the land. The fact 18 that not for years has any infectious dis- ease among our cattle prevailed, and there is no healthier stock in the moun- tains of Colorado than on the plains of Nebraska, This state also has a strict quarantine against Illinois, which is the only locality where an infectious disease has existed in the west for six months past, Yesterday, to bring the action of the Colorado authorities to a realizatton of their action, the Live stock commission wrote them concerning a Nebraska quar- antine against them that, put in opera- tion, would practically suspend ship- ments to markets from Colorado. The Jetter, written by the commissioners, 1s as follows: LINCOLN, May 18, 1857.—Charles (. Lamb, V. S.—Dear Sir: Yours of the 12th at hana containing copy of your quarantine rules zainst the state of Neébraska, Now this last tep we regard as being very hml{‘dnll with- out cause, and 1 am Guthorized y the com- mission to say to you that if you persist in his quarantine against Nebraska we will d:.-elne qllamnl!ne against Colorado within n days. Hoping that you wul m;onsldur 1s matter, 1 am yours respectful { Jas. C. BiiNey, Commissioner. As an illustration of the way business is accumulating on the live stock com- mussion, the fol lowin{ places repormd onses of glanders in Wednesday's mail: Holdrige, Dunbar, Central City, Calvert, Platte Luntru, urutnm. Sarpv county, Columbus, Beaver City, Ponca, Verdon, Hardy and Auburn. While this day's mail brought in_complaints above the average, it is a fair way in which com- ints accumulate, snd over 100 are now ked awaiting investigation. One party in writing said: “lt is with pleas. l:ro that 1 write you of a horse I have thav a8 the glanders.” Wherein the pleasure eame 1n making such an announcement ‘Was not manifest. STATE HOUSE NOTES. Slmr!fl' Charles Penn, of (,uster county, was at Lincoln yns!enhf bringing with him to the penitentiary "homas incent, who enters upon a’twenty-four years’ sentence for murder. Sheriff Pitt Rathburn, of Dakota City, svas at the capital city the day before, bringing with him a horse thief named dones, who will inhabit the state pem- tentiary. To-day the governor will visit the state Matchery at South Bend, where he will anect the members of the fish commis- sion. His excellency will inspect the Btate hatchery and the distribution of some 260,000,000 young fish that will be .tarted out lnr‘plmmnu in the state. On Friaay of this week, the field :md fine officers of the First Nebraska Re ment will meet at the office of the adju- tant general for the purpose of electing a colonel to succeed L. W. Colby, pro- moted to brigadier fzenornl and to elect h houwnlnl colonel to fill the existing va- At unwarranted Adjutunt General Cole yesterday for- ;mrdod commissions to the following of- ers in different companies: Martin J. Mahoney, captan; Frapk kowler, first fieutenant, and W. E. Rougers, second liunn-unm all of company k,at Fremont. Morolnnd captain, and L, A, Bald- s' first lieutenant of ocmrnny ¥, at niata, and Lieutenant Hall of company ¥, at Boatrice. Colonel Colby was atthe adjutant general's office yesterday. A GOOD SUGGESTION, A vrominent citizen in public affairs suggests that it would be wisdom on the sm of the city council to refrain from iscussions on paving materials for the dhfterent districts until after the contracts #s advertised for are opened. It is very evident that if the council and property olders decide in advance on the mate- Tial to be used that the promoters of the amaterial selected willnot bid down the way they would if the other contestants for paving material were 1n the contest with a show of success. The action of dvocates for certamn materials in push- f g for a decision at once is in no way wise, and it opens the doors at once for pools and jobbery. THE GREAT WALKING MATCH, Preparations are complete for the walk- ang match at the Mutmpolnun rink that commences at 8 o'clock to-night and will end at 10 o'clock Saturday night. This, 08 before anuounced, is a fifty-hour go- as-you-please match, and such noted pe- destrians as Dan O'Leary, of Chicago, Frank Hart, the colored. pedestrian of Boston, are on tna‘fmund ready for the ontest. Charles H. Ross, of Omaha, and eorge Hoflman, of Bellwood, are also enterod for the race. The track in the rink is of sawdust, sixteen laps to the mile, and one wager has already been made that some one of the pedostrians :{ul make better than 200 miles in the me. < ABOUT THE CITY, Yesterday articles were filed 1n the county court incorporating the Lincoln District telegraph company with a capi- tal stock of 510\1 000 divided into shares of $100 each. ‘The corporation com- mences business May 16, 1887, and con- tinues to a liko date'in 1987, with the tul» lowhl mmrnomwra L. There are 20,000,000 acres of govern- ment land in Dakota still open to settle- ment. The Bismarck land district has 2,500,~ 000 aeres: Devil's Lake district, 4,000,000 acres. Deadwood land distris 000,000 actes. Aberdeen land district, 600,000 acres. Grand Forks land district, 600,000. Fargo land district. 400, 300, The land in_the Huron, Watertown, Mitchell and Yanktoh districts is sub: stantially gone, Some time, of course, a portion of the reservations set aside for the Indians will be open for general set. tlements but at present 20,000,000 of acres comprise all the available Jand for settlers in all the vast Territory of Da- kota, Ata moderate rate of settlement this land will be gone within the next three years, and the best of 1t within the next twelve to eighteen months. It is theresore important that those contem- plating immigration to Dakota, should embrace the very earhest oppmtumly to secure homesteads. ——— A Great Battle is continually going on in the human sys- tem. The demon of impure blood strives to gain victory over the constitution, to ruin health, to drag victims to the grave, A good relinble medicine like Hood's Sarsaparilla 1s the weapon with which to defend one’s self, drive the desperate enemy from the llcld and restore peace and bodily health for' many years. I'ry this peculiar medicine. S A Star-Route Mail. Ernest Ingersoll, in The American Magazine: In one ‘of the gulchus stood the ruins of a cabin and a *'star-route” refuge. No possible neod had existed for a mail-carriage across here, but a few years before m{ date, contractors had found it profitable to institute the route; and a sack holding a half dozen letters and perhaps a few .copies of the Con- gressional (Globe, was earried back and forth on horseback. One man broaght it one hundred and fifty miles or so from Missouri and delivered it here in the wild woods toa second man, who carried it dovn to lake Pend’d'Oreills, rowed forty miles across the fir-circled water, and handed itover to a rider at the west- ern end. This micdle man was utterly alone. Not a single soul lived on his route. In the winter he traveled on snow-shoes, for months together saw no- body but the carrier who brought him his pouch at each end, and could tell you stories of adventures with wolves and bears, and of wonderful visions of elks, sheep and mountain goats. Robinson Crusoe led a less secluded life. St deop il g ‘When you are constipated, with loss of hlpahw headache, take one of Dr. J. Rome heads the list with 204,000,600 litres of pure water—a litre being a little more than one and three-fourths pints— every twenty-four hours, and as her pop- ulation is 845,036, every inhabitant can thus dispose ‘of 600 litres per day. Lon- don comes next, for every one of whose gmpuluuon is msing 4,000,000 there are litres daily, Paris’ takes the third place, her population amounting to 2,240, 124, and each inhabitant having for ali- montary purposes 58 litres per day, and for secondary uses 169, or a total of 227. Berlin has 1,300,283 inhabitants, for each of whom thore are 140 litresa. day; Vienna 770,172 inhabitants, with 100 litres each per dny.Nnnlu. 408,173, with 200 litres, and Tunis, 278,508, 90 litres a head every twuuly-(onr hours. ———— Workmen are digging the cellar pre- paratory to the erection of the new busi- ness block at the corner of Douglas and Fiftecnth streets., Catarrhal Dangers. J., Towa, at Barker hotel IT I8 WONDERFUL how easily rheumatism begins, and how in- sidiously it grows in the system until one is startled to find himself its victim,in either the acute or chronic form. He then learns the fearful tenacity of its grip and the utter powerlessness of the ordinary remedies to give relief. Probably to no disease have physicians given more study, and none has more com= pletely Wuffled ‘their efforts to provide a specific; and until Athlopheros was dis- covered there was no medicine that would cure rheumatism, neuralgia nervous or headache. Thousands of testimonials ke the following prove beyond question that Athlophoros is the only reliable remedy, and that it will do all that is claimed for it. Englewood, Kansas. Athlophoros has done me more good than all other medicines put together, for I was a great sufferer from rheumatism and neu- ralgia, and can say to-day, I am free from both complaints, © MRs. MARIA STONE, W. S, Hopkins, 179 C Avenue, Cedar Rapids, Town, say:z *‘My wifeand daugh- ter were both stricken with inflammatary rheumatism at the same time. The lower limbs were much swollén; the pain seemed much beyond endurance; sleep was out of tke question; they suffered so much that to move or even touch the sheet on the bed would cause the most violent pain. They were confined to the bed four weeks, Dur- ing that time and previous I hough! many kinds of medicine, then I emv'oyed a phy- sician, but nothing gave relief until I heard of Athlophawl. I bought a bottle at once, and am glad tosay in a very short timejthe swelling was reduced, the “pain gone, and they were entirely well.” Ever, drufzm should keep Athlopho- ros and Athlophoros Pills, but where they cannot be bought of the druggist the Athlophoros bo. 113 Wall 8t., New York, will send either (carriaj pn d) on receipt of regular price, which i PM bottle for Athlophoros and 50c. !or 1’1 For liver and kidney diseases, dyspepsia, in- digestion, weakness, norvous debiilty, diseases of women, constiphtion, headacha, impine blood, ete., Athiophoros Pills are unequalisd.
